A sad treatise on the downward spiral of the Sandpit Pilot.

A young newly minted commercial pilot walked into the local aero club. Standing at the far end of the bar was a disheveled, unkempt and morose looking individual, dressed in a tatty and faded Middle Eastern Airlines captains uniform.

Still having some questions regarding the piloting profession after his newly completed course, the young pilot approached the sad specimen, and asked:

Is it true that the greatest threats a pilot faces within his company are ignorance, apathy and isolation?

The shambles of a captain looked up over the rim of his pint glass with weary resignation and answered:

I don't know.
I don't care.
Leave me alone.

.........and then the newb snuck off behind the captain's back and reported the capt for not wearing his tie but really because he didn't like the senior man's attitude, and despite his 25 years of service the capt was brought in on his day off to be spoken to like a child, threatened with being buried in the desert and given a warning letter.

downward spiral

and the captain bit his tongue knowing fully well the implications of any negativity , took a deep breath , looked towards the holy lands for inspiration ,grinned his five star grin , promised the lad , Son, the world is your home and you are their guest before walking off into a new tomorrow greeting everyone with mad laughter ,HELLO :}:}

...and then he walked towards the sunset ...cap and bag in hand, through the pearly gates whence he entered all those years ago... Paused, turned and took one final glance...at that place of toil, tear and laughter....smiled reflectively ...donned his cap and walked off towards a better place...that tranquil shining light on the hill...peace at last, oh sweet Jesus, peace at last...

.....and then suddenly a SCREAM from the 3rd floor behind....."But Captain!!!"

"Huh?"

"..,your bond !!!!.."

Standard day on the 380 by the looks of it...there won't be much difference between WW2 U boat ops and select middle east airlines rostering once they get the approvals for 1000+ hours.

I see many similarities from history here...anyone?

Shawshank is probably a better analogy.....just about any scene works depending where you are in seniority.

Quitting aviation was the best decision of my life.

Falcon,

I like the Shawshank scene where the new fish enter the prison and the new fat guy breaks down and cries. Hadley comes along and "persuades" him to be quiet!

Could be a great recruitment technique!!

Mind you Das Boot has a good depiction of what the flight crew might look like with 1000 hours rosters (7:45 into the movie), when Ca. Thomson makes his speech. Then again at (11:30 into the movie when they pull Thomson up from the bathroom floor. Substitute U boat for 330 and you have a pretty good picture!

Man I miss "stripy pajamas"!

Maybe after 1000+ hours you will start singing like those in DAS Boot. The clean cut guy at );26 is the management guy.
