EK- Warning to Pet owners in Silicon Oasis
Mods, Dubai animal welfare groups have asked donators/members to share to anyone living in this community, which is largely EK, a warning to pet owners. If it shouldn't be here apologies but there are many pilots & families living in this area...
------From Feline Friends Dubai Social Media Page----- WARNING!! Please can all pet owners in the Sillicon Oasis area, be really vigilant about their cats whereabouts. 2 cats owned by 2 different families in Semmer Villas were doused in lighter fuel over their whole bodies on Monday evening late. Their owners both managed to track them down as had been looking for them, but one of the cats has since been rushed to the vets seriously ill, so please pray for her. Sadly last night another cat also was discovered in the same state.. Again managed to make it home, but that's 3 cats now in 2 days... The police went last night to speak to the owners, but couldn't really do much, but said they would patrol but that obviously didn't happen as it happened again. ... 7 days have been contacted already. If anyone else can help to publicize this, that would be great. Please share this and ask everyone in Silicon Oasis who is a pet owner or aware of little street kitties in the area to keep them safe and ask their local security to do patrols. Please be vigilant these will probably not be isolated incidents! Felt it should be shared as often these scum go from animals to humans... and there have been incidents threatening the safety of kids in this area in the past. Would hope they would not target children but the quicker they catch these animal abusers the better.... |
My wife said the vet here put something out, but the vet said it was happening on the Cedre side? Anyone heard anything?

Abusive animal treatment.
Regardless of whether you like animals or not, precisely how a society treats their animals is usually a fair indication as to its degree of civility, compassion and evolution…….

The resident culture are generally not known for their good treatment of animals unless it's a;
Horse, camel, falcon or exotic pet. There probably is a law against this sort of behaviour but ignorance and parental abdication of responsibility to the driver/housemaid mean it's not likely to change in a hurry :* In fairness, we don't know who/where from! |
I will probably get flamed for this no pun intended. Dubai is no place for dogs.. Cats maybe. As a person who has grown up with dogs there is no way I would subject a dog to a life here. People call themselves animal lovers but keep large dogs in apartments cooped up 23 hours a day, I can tell you people like that do not care about animals and are bloody selfish. They are usually the first to cry out at the bad treatment of animals in the meantime subjecting their Labrador to a 10 minute walk in 50 degree heat.
For the dogs sake don't buy dogs here or bring them in from overseas it's just not fair on them. |
We have 3 cats and a dog, all rescues. The cats all stay inside our villa at all times as it's just too dangerous to let them out. The dog has no interest in going outside, but that's due to her being severely ill treated before she was rescued.
One thing I do have a problem with is people buying cats and dogs in Dubai. The rescue shelters are inundated with perfectly good cats and dogs of all ages and breeds that are in search of loving homes, which can be rescued with just a small donation to cover costs. The Dubai Dogs Trust is a charity run tirelessly by one of the EK cabin crew. Have a look at their webpage and you might find someone you can give a good home to! |
Firstly, let me make it clear that I would never condone nor abide by anyone abusing any helpless animal...be it a dog, cat, bird or otherwise.
Regarding the recent abuse in DSO - whist this type of behavior is abhorrent, perhaps if the owners of these animals kept them under control, the instances of this type of attack might be reduced. I for one have an issue with other peoples cats (in particular cats) wondering into my garden/backyard area and using it as their private latrine. These free range cats also cause and are part of horrific fights between other home kept domestic cats and stray feral cats. I'm sure more than 1 or 2 of us have been subjected to the screeching and hissing at night. I have heard the argument before, that cats are "roamers" and "hunters" thus requiring them to roam freely. That may be all well and good, but roam freely in their owners garden areas...not in other residents own. |
I agree...but it's not always the domestic crowd, the numbers of Feral cats out there is astronomical, and the fights for territory and breeding rights are noisy ones! A squirt bottle (water only) helps, as well as having your own pets sterilized helps a lot.

WARNING: WE HAVE JUST RECEIVED REPORTS OF MORE DOG POISONINGS IN DUBAI.. PLEASE BE CAREFUL OR IF POSSIBLE AVOID THE FOLLOWING AREAS WITH PETS, DSO, AL QUADRA/ARABIAN RANCHES and JVC. As below: WARNING TO ALL PET OWNERS: In the past 2-3 weeks at least 12 dogs have died due to poisoning in the Al Qudra / Arabian Ranches area. We are also aware of similar cases in other areas of Dubai. It is believed to be either Strychnine or Metaldahyde poison that is being used. It is a fast acting poison, taking effect in less than 1hour and results in death. Symptoms include: Seizures, muscle contractions, foaming from the mouth, vomiting and diarrhea. We ask you help spread the word and be extra vigilant when walking your dogs in all areas. Where possible keep your dogs on a leash and do not allow them to eat or lick anything whilst out. Also, take care to wash the paws after a walk to avoid dogs licking poison from the paws. Should you suspect your dog has been poisoned you should contact a Veterinarian immediately. Please make sure you know your vet's 24 HR Emergency number. |
It's possible these sad poisonings are collateral damage from a program by the Municipality to control wild foxes and feral dogs. Rabies and other diseases are the target. I don't think your average joe has access to enough strychnine and whatnot to spread enough o kill that many animals. (I hope I'm right) Keep your pets close, and run them farther out in the desert if you can.

I am thing the same thing as left coaster. Arabian ranches is full steam ahead with a tidy up phase issuing violations to pretty much everybody about everything. They are fixing up all the little paving and similar problems. I would not be surprised if they have dropped out some baits for strays. I have a dog at ranches and have tried to find out if any deaths have resulted from those that only access their own back yards but to no avail. Al Quadra is in construction mode. Is it Emaar run?

If (when?) they get Expo 2020 they will go into flat out clean up mode. There will be a huge tidy up campaign and any stray (or even not stray but in the wrong place at the wrong time) dogs/cats/labourers/children will probably be shot on sight. Nothing ugly can be allowed to taint the image of Dubai.

They should start by arresting all those "expats" who leave their crap in the sand by the road after their little fri/sat night shindigs.
