Good news for the Boeing drivers. Something modern on the way.

Emirates is closing on a deal to be a launch customer for Boeing’s 777X but still has “a lot of work to do” around the commercial negotiations, says the airline’s president Tim Clark.
“We spent the summer working through the technical side of the aeroplane and from what I can see it looks very good. We will now look at the pricing and commercial aspects. So far so good, but there’s still a lot of work to do,” he says.
Clark says Emirates has only recently been given definitive pricing information on the twinjet, and that the timing of any contract with Boeing will be “when it suit us – it may be the Dubai air show [in November], but if we’re not ready we won’t be doing it”.
Clark says that the 777X’s General Electric GE9X powerplant is fundamental to the new programme achieving Boeing’s performance and economics claims. “The engine is key to all of this. I’ve told GE that if they don’t deliver the ceramic CFC engines there will be issues,” he says.
To meet Emirates’ performance needs, the 777X’s GE9X will need a water-injection system to ensure that the aircraft can operate comfortably year-round from Dubai on all its required missions. “Unlike earlier demineralised water-injection systems such as on the BAC One-Eleven, this one is all about coolant – very high temperatures at high work rates,” says Clark.
“It makes a very material difference to our operating capabilities in the hot months in Dubai. Without that, the 777-9X doesn’t do that much better in those conditions than the -300ER does today.”

Emirates will never be able to get by without 777s. Someone has to make up the fuel wastage and inability of the airborne excrescence.

Next time you are in LHR ask how Skycargo dispatches their cargo from that airport to the rest of the world. Broad hint: none of it actually leaves from LHR by air and none of it travels on an Airbus.

jack schidt 21st Sep 2013 17:54

Ohhhh Drop, you still having an A380 vs 777 pair off, that was all done years ago. A 777 freighter does the LHR at least once a week while the whole hold on the A380 is full of 2 decks of passengers luggage, it's not a weight issue but a space issue.

Simply put, who cares, go to work, get paid go home. That's the philosophy that they push and thats the practice I will follow, nothing more or less.

(having said that, the A380 is ofc by farrr the better aircraft , tee hee, can Dropp resist!) :}

donpizmeov 21st Sep 2013 17:56

I agree Drop. The 777 makes a great freighter.

freighter=money maker.....

What business are we in again???

I thought Lufthansa just ordered the first batch of these new Triples...

How would that make Emirates the "launch customer"?

I was hoping this thread was about finaly getting some 737 Max updates..bummer.

Anyway, LH is the launch customer for the 777X

helen-damnation 22nd Sep 2013 05:46

Unfortunately, I suspect the "modern" still won't apply to the flight deck.

IMHO:
Crappy seats, trim for speed ( on a FBW a/c ), a (selected) non-ILS approach procedure that's asking for an accident and serious thrust management issues aka AMS/SFO.

The Airbus is not without it's faults, but I know which flight deck I prefer :O

Modern 777 ?

A tractor with automatic gear i.s.o. manual? :D

ironbutt57 22nd Sep 2013 08:12

Water injection...hmmmm....used that before...how much weight is that gonna cost??

donpizmeov 22nd Sep 2013 08:38

Wiz I think the hundreds and hundreds of seats on board always confuses me. Are they going to take them off?

The rest of you are being very cruel. This aeroplane will have watermethanol (well perhaps no methanol during Ramadan daylight hours) and folding wings so it can be parked. It should work a treat. Or is the water going to be recycled from the waste system? You could then say it goes like the crappers.:E

Yeah I know, coat hat door.

We're in the business of making money by haulin' stuff (breathing or otherwise) in Aeroplanes, Don.

Your beast does that very well on some routes, ours on others.

Still, it's interesting that your "Modern" aircraft has, depending on how you do the math, either a slightly better or slightly worse fuel-burn per KG/RPK/Bum-On-Seat or whatever than our "old" one.

How will it compare to an aircraft with a 20% better performance?

donpizmeov 22nd Sep 2013 09:42

Very good question mate. How much fuel will it need to carry 5oo bums in a three class config and 10t of freight to somewhere? You could be onto something.

Wizofoz 22nd Sep 2013 09:50

Which is better- Making money hauling 350 people and freight, or losing money carrying 500?

BobDole 22nd Sep 2013 10:06

Regardless of how much money it costs/makes, or how much fuel it burns, does it affect how much we get paid or don't get paid?

I'm still looking for somewhere to spend that huge bonus we got this year... :ugh:

That being said... MY airplane is better than YOUR airplane! :}

donpizmeov 22nd Sep 2013 10:24

Nail and head Bob.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I knew it would turn into a magnet for the Boeing v. Airbus d-bags; get over it guys, it doesnt matter how profitable your aircraft is, you wont ever see the result in your bank account so why care?

Back on topic; in the article it mentions that LH will be one of the launching customers, not the launch customer. Boeing will officially launch the B777-X at this years Dubai Airshow, the next big questions are, how many do we think EK will buy, and will it impact on the A350 order?

glofish 23rd Sep 2013 04:39

Why not have a little fun and go into to T7 vs whale contest? After all that roster and wave crap we have to deal with, some humour is quite welcome ....

Basically scandy is right that take the money and don't bother, but if i see a piece of metal eating away some of a potential bonus (!), then its hard not to give it a kick!

What Timmy said is very true and revealing:

“It makes a very material difference to our operating capabilities in the hot months in Dubai. Without that, the 777-9X doesn’t do that much better in those conditions than the -300ER does today.”
That's a jab at the whale, as it was initially designed to do just that, to take total capacity to the westies. The 77L was designed for that and can deliver, not so the whale, putting the 77W on these routes was a gamble by EK, the aircraft not initially designed for these routes.
So EK learned its lesson and this time insists on getting the performance they want!
The 77X might be able to do it and i predict a huge order.

Concerning the 350: It's already 6t too heavy for the 800. Consider the 1000 that needs the new wing-box to accommodate the 6-wheel bogies, then the weight issue will be even bigger. I guess a quick analysis of the LH order shows that the companies will most probably go for the 350 in its 900 version to replace 330'ies, but anything having to replace 340/3-5-6 and T7s, even 74s, will go 77X.

As to the whale, wait until the fuel price goes over 120$ and the premium passenger average revenue erodes at the same pace as the last 2 years, and the companies will start "whaling" themselves in the coming 2 years.

The future lies with the big twins 77X, 359 and if they get the "Energizers" right, the 787.

donpizmeov 23rd Sep 2013 09:38

Sorry Wiz, I was trying to point out that the whale and 777 are for totally different markets. I don't understand why people always try and compare them. No-one would compare a 737 vs a 777 even though the 737 has less fuel burn per seat, same applies to the 380 vs 777 or any other twin. There is a huge market for big twins, but very few will have the routes/demand to make the 380 work.
A future fleet of 380s and 777s, or 380s and 350s would seem more cost effective than a mix of all the above. I hope they get it right, as I hope to be retired and using staff travel by then. (See, I didn't make any reference to the 777 having to leave with empty seats and leaving staff behind when the temp gets near ISA.:E)
Glofish, good find on the whale jab, as it was well cloaked by being called a "-300ER". I think there are still some straws left for you to grasp at though.
