We are not here to serve you water !!- RJ CC.

Often we pilots get to travel to far corners of this planet, sometimes requiring us to travel in airlines other than the ones we work for.
Many of us would have experienced varying types of onboard service quality
and flying experience. At a time when global airlines are going over board to ensure service quality and customer satisfaction here is one experience that I encountered yesterday unlike any I have ever heard of before.

Regular flyers would have had an incident or bad experience once in a while but what I got to experience was a complete package.

Airline: Royal Jordanian.

Flight No.: RJ 192.

Date: 11 Sep 2013.

Route: Amman - New Delhi.

Class of travel: Coach.

Type of Aircraft: Airbus A319.

Incident 1.

While boarding and proceeding to my assigned seat I notice it to be occupied.

I inform a jordanian male cabin crew member who points to empty seats in the

back and says " You go sit any where all seats same seats".

I was shocked at the rude reply but didnt really care so I just picked a seat

for myself.

Incident 2.

While serving the dinner. One cabin crew member pushes the trolley to hit

the other cabin crew member on his butt and does it repeatedly and he

seems to be enjoying his act. In the process one of the CC ends up spilling

red wine on me and what astonishes me more is the fact that both of them

start laughing.

When I ask them to be more careful in a stern voice one of the CC responds

saying "OK OK easy No problem".

Incident 3

One of the pax seated infront of me (Quiet an old man) requested for a

vegetarian meal to which the CC replied " I dont have vegetarian you have to

eat chicken fish or beef." The poor old man ended up eating just a slice of

bread and butter.

Incident 4 and the best of it all..

A young gentleman seated next to me presses the Flight Attendant call

button to which no one turns up for 10 minutes. Unassumingly he presses it

again and asks for water. One of the CC turns up to the seat and says " WE

WILL NOT SERVE YOU WATER HERE. IF YOU ARE THIRSTY YOU COME BACK

AND FETCH IT YOURSELF. ALSO DONT PRESS THIS BUTTON (FA CALL

BUTTON) IT IS AN EMERGENCY BUTTON AND DISTURBS US. "

To which I interfere and positively Identify myself and suggest that they do

a water service instead of arguing with the passengers to which the Purser

CC replies " YOU DONT TEACH ME MY JOB."

Thats it. I have had enough for this flight. Despite identifying myself as an

airman, I was not shown even the slightest of respect or courtesy.

After landing I demand to meet the captain. The same Purser replies

"CAPTAIN IS VERY BUSY HE CANT MEET YOU."

I quietly walked away in disbelief and silence.

I am not a person who complains of lack of service. All I am requesting for

from RJ is a basic human courtesy.

I would really appreciate if I could get some contact in RJ not to file any

complaint against any one but to provide them with some constructive

criticism so as to emphasize the value of humanity.

Sorry for the long rant. Cheers.

Ps. All the above incidents involved RJ Male Cabin Crew :}. Also a very good landing by the flight deck :).

File a complaint anyway. That way, there is a formal record, whether the company does anything about it or not.

I do wonder what sort of ethos is being promoted at their cabin crew training centre though.

I read your anti CC post. Besides sharing your concerns, I do have to tell you that it was badly managed by you in the first place.
To top it all, you sign off with the good landing bit. Are you truly a pilot ??

doubleu-anker 12th Sep 2013 22:26

Why do we need male cabin crew? It's not a mans job! Too many nancy boys in aviation, these days.

What goes round, comes around.

Remember how rude the Spanish and (fat) Greek waiters used to be? Over the years I've had my food almost thrown at me, when my order was delivered. Well, now it's turned around and bit them on the a**e. Now most of them out of work thank God.

I am not homophobic! I am not homophobic! I am not homophobic! :}

I do have to tell you that it was badly managed by you in the first place.
No, you don't have to tell anybody rdr because in this case, going by the OP's narrative, you are totally wrong, ask any experienced CC, a little expression we have in the Western world that you may not be familiar with, "Manners maketh Man"

donpizmeov 13th Sep 2013 04:11

I can't believe they didn't fall on bended knee when you told them you were an"airman" and beg forgiveness. Can't believe you didn't pull out the racism card as well.
GE get over yaself.

The don.

FerrypilotDK 13th Sep 2013 04:36

GE related a story about bad cabin service, giving several examples, adding a humourous quip at the end that at least the landing was good.

Get off his case, for f***'s sake. I have also had to indicate to CC, adding a wee bit of knowledge by showing an ID, that refueling was not complete and therefore they should not be closing the doors in one case and pointing out the aircraft had a serious fuel leak in another! I never thought that this meant I was "full of myself."

....and neither did the cockpit crew later!

GE90-115B 13th Sep 2013 10:08

I didnt demand that I be given special treatment by RJ. All I asked for is some basic courtesy especially given the fact that I was a passenger who has paid for his ticket.

I have been getting a few pms. Thanks a lot for the support guys. Cheers.

All due respect, cabin complaint would not usually be dealt with by the captain unless it was a serious safety concern. At the point where you were not satisfied with the Purser's response, it would probably have served you better to inform him you would contact the airline directly.

Secondly, regarding the other passengers' meal. Do you know if the pax actually booked a meal? Veg meals usually aren't standard fare, they have to be requested in advance. If the pax didn't, cabin frew are correct- they only have fish, chicken or beef. Perhaps the manner it was said left something to be desired, perhaps it is an English-as-second language issue. We can't exactly tell just by reading it quoted here.

From what I observed in my travels, Jordanians have a way of speaking English that may at first seem rude but often may prove to be the fact that their English is not 100%. If you felt badly done by contact RJ direct, what do you hope to achieve by posting about a CC specific issue in a mainly pilot oriented subforum? Though it is "Middle East" I guess...

I did.

I had booked the asian vegeterian meal as well. I ended up eating chicken due to non availability. Enough said.

2000 + Views and few pms giving me the point of contact for RJ onboard service. Objective Achieved.

michaeljpotter 14th Sep 2013 07:20

I understand you were frustrated by this event, and I'm not in any way defending the crew. Clearly a pax shouldn't be spoken to in this manner - but in defense that could also be down to language barrier and interpretation. Are you a native English speaker?
I cant help but wonder, your location is "flight deck" and this being a mostly pilot forum most will understand you're probably a pilot.
You then reinforce this fact by saying "us pilots" and then later on you say you identify yourself as a pilot to the crew when things are up to standard - do you work for RJ? If not...why will they care really if they aren't bothered about regular pax in the first place? If they're not worried about them, then a pilot doesn't mean all of a sudden they are going bow down to you - or was that what you wanted despite you saying publicly you didn't want special treatment.
If someone gave me bad service at a restaurant back home in the U.K and repeated bad service I didn't pull out my warrant card and go "I'm police you need to treat me different" because in the U.K that's called Abuse of the Office of Constable. So perhaps wording your post differently may have got some people less rattled about the way you've written your incident.

Capetonian 14th Sep 2013 07:41

I have ever only experienced extreme rudeness/unacceptable behaviour on two flights in all my many years of frequent flying.

One was on Iberia, when I went into the galley in the middle of the night on a transatlantic to get some water and two of the attendants were smoking. I was threatened with physical violence if I reported the matter which I did. I'm still around and wasn't 'done over' by anyone on arrival in Madrid as they had threatened!

The other was under the same circumstances when a very rude arrogant FA refused me a bottle of water (I was in Business class on a flight from BKK, not that class of service should make a difference), and was most unpleasant in his refusal. He accused me of 'having a problem with German people' (I don't and even if I did it's irrelevant) and I reported him to the CSD who dealt with it sensitively and appropriately. I also got a number of Miles credited.

crewmeal 14th Sep 2013 09:06

Having lived and worked in Jordan for a few years I can safely say in all the times I've used RJ there has been nothing but excellent and attentive service on all flights. I wish the same could be said when I used BMI on the route. Jordanians are one of the most courtious Arabic people I know compared with Gulf states. If what happened on that flight was not exaggerated in any way then the crew deserve to get what's coming to them. However I don't believe things would have got that bad especially on a flight of that length.

What does rattle me however is the obnoxious way doubleu-anker bangs on about male cabin crew. The service industry is full of both male and females and to single out males in the way you did was truly homophobic.

There are "pink" jobs and "blue" jobs. Jobs for the girls and jobs for the men. Real men.

How often do you see a girl operating a pneumatic drill? How many girls do you see driving bulldozers? Maybe in the CCCP in the old days. :=

Wizofoz 14th Sep 2013 12:19

How many girls do you see driving bulldozers?
My petite, Female cousin drives one of those enormous mining trucks for a living and last year earned approximately the same as me for doing it.

The 1950s is calling and is wondering when you'll be back.....

You may or may not be homophobic, but on what planet do you think that is acceptable language? Are you a pilot? If you are you should be ashamed of yourself - your language reveals a particularly unpleasant brand of weak leadership.

givemewings 14th Sep 2013 13:08

I suppose using Google to find the contact yourself was too hard...

So your objective was thread views... in other words, you were trolling. Several people offered explanations as to why you may have got the response you did, but the problem is still all them.

I suppose you refuse to see how you might have come across as a bit of a to$$er yourself? Any responsible adult has a contigency plan in case things dont turn up as ordered. You said the issue you had was with the other passenger not getting a meal- which you could not know whether he actually booked or noto then reveal your real issue was that YOU did not get a requested meal. Two completely different things. It obviously wasn't critical for you if you accepted chicken in the end. Khalas, bad luck, next time you know better if travelling RJ. If I had a buck every time someone tells me they booked a meal and actually didnt.. you know the rest.

FYI, "demanding" to see the Captain would get you a chat with the cops in more than a few countries....

donpizmeov 14th Sep 2013 16:28

Calm down wings, I am sure you have seen this type before, you know, the ones that ask for the comment form whilst boarding just in case. They can't help themselves.

PIK3141 14th Sep 2013 17:45

So, the balance of opinion on this thread is that the behaviour of the CC was just fine. I for one, do not think so.

GE90-115B 14th Sep 2013 18:26

givemewings. Yes I paid for the service and I was treated badly for what I had paid. I have the right to let the world know how poor a service I had experienced on RJ. I definitely am not saying all the flights were bad but this one was and this is the exact one I have posted about.
Regarding the meal. I ordered vegeterian. I didnt get it. I dont care. I didnt even list it in my complaints. Even had I got it I would have given it away to the strictly vegeterian pax next to me. As I could do away with any other meal. My post seemed to have offended you. You probably are one of the nanny boys too :p

ps. meeting the captain might be illegal in a few countries but it is not in the most remaining of them especially after landing, by showing your ID and with his consent to talk to me. Khalas.
