Is debris from a 2,500-ton Russian satellite going to fall over the UAE tonight? - Emirates 24/7

That's one, big, momma-bear satellite. If I was in the UAE which, thankfully, I'm not, I'd be heading for somewhere safe, like Iran.

You gotta love both the journalist and the "advanced science" boffins for checking their facts.

Is that the one that sprinkled itself across the Hudson Bay yesterday? Weight is off by a factor of 1000 but what is that in cosmic terms?

Dak Man 29th Jan 2013 12:43

I'd love to see the delivery vehicle capable of putting a "2,500 ton" satellite in orbit.

That would be 25x Saturn V launches , or about 90x Space Shuttle - both RIP. I believe the ISS is weighing in at 1000 tons.

Rotorhead1026 30th Jan 2013 02:45

According to this, it weighed 5500 pounds - about 2.5 metric tons - as noted by MrMachfivepointfive above in post 2.

Cosmos 1484 | Astro Bob

As a point of reference, a typical late-WWII destroyer displaced around 2200 tons.

The journos in this part of the world do my head in. Most hail from a certain part of the world were knowledge of a thesaurus gives the impression of intelligence.

"A white collar worker in Ruwi was waylaid this morning by an unidentified brigand."

Makes me want to punch someone in the face!

and I always thought you were such a mild mannered guy Farrell :E

Would that be a Bristol Brigand? Now one of those I would love to see :ok:

Rubbish weather in Abu Dhabi today so maybe we were affected by the piece of space junk after all.

There are rather ominous looking clouds overhead MCT at the moment.
Did you get rain?
