Qatar and commuting
 

Hi. I am looking for some info please on working for Qatar and being able to commute home to London. I have an interview soon and would love to move there but would need to come back home quite often, say every month.

Anyone any info on this please ? Any answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you HAVE to, forget it it won't happen...I manage to get home probably once every 6 weeks for 2/3 days max and i'm on long haul fleet, nothing is a given here, your here to work, period!

This company will make a lot of people much more happy,especially the one living separated from their family,if they propose a commuting contract ( at least to the people who are willing to ), 6 weeks on 2 weeks off or something like that...wiith no additional leave ,even if it comes with a small cut in salary, I will sign immediately!:)

Why do people think it' such a good idea to plug really bad deals on these forums for your employer to read. Your buddy AA will use this as your initial negotiating point.

The Middle East airlines are not conducive to commuting and discourage it.

The only way to get block days off is to use the bidding system. But honestly that is a waste of time. I have not been able to get the max block days off (eight days). Even though i bid for it every month. :=. If you are looking for a commuting airline go to Korean, Turkish etc. You will find a lot of ex Qatar guys there. They left for that.

Often wondered why not; seems like a "nobrainer" to me. In these hard times, do anything to hang on to valuable "aircrew assets".

ME aitlines growing exponentially need to keep the Right Stuff up front.

I’ve donethe 6 on 2 off routine. It works for a while but eventually each 6 weeks dragsby as you count each day until you can leave, and the 2 weeks off seem to flashby. It feels like you’ve only been home a few days before you start packing to headback to work.

I’ve found Ifpossible ( and I know everyone’s circumstances are different) it pays to moveto the new job and start a life there.

A 6 on 2 off is not a commuting roster even if company/agency claim it is.

Well at least is a very good start for some of us ... living at 30 west!

One thing it will be for sure ... whoever of the 3 ME Major (EK, EY, QR) will offer a commuting roster ... that airline will suck lots of pilots from the other two! That day will be remember in history.

It's not if you do the math, on a 6 on 2 off you will have only the min days off. Then a 2 weeks off.
If you take your days off per month plus your leave. You will have more days off totals.
This is a been counter trick and the company who offer that win in productivity this is why they do it.
Vietnam have try 5/3 and even 4/4 with less pay. To my knowledge they don't offer it anymore.

The ME airlines offer, housing, schooling, residence, the opportunity to not have to live in "Delsey Estates"...if one does not choose to live abroad, but rather commute, then other areas of the world are best pursued....:ok:

As mentioned above, quite often the "commute schedules" are often more fatiguing than residing in one's host country....that being said, most folks I know here in the Gulf seem to have a reasonable amount of chances to return to "home country", with the opportunity to have a normal family life (as normal as aviation gets anyway) when resident "in country".....

True ... grass is always greener but trust me ... lots of pilot's azzes will smile with 6 weeks on 2 weeks off (sorry for my french)!

Gents, it's not going to happen, as simple as that. At least not in QR, EK, or that other one that can't be named. Just the way it is, deal with it. Sure, I agree that month on, month off sounds more appealing, but it's just not going to happen, not here. Make the best of what you got, don't worry about something you don't have.

Like I said, they are not interested in commuting here, been here 21+years, I only "commute" to some of the far-flung exciting destinations I could never afford to visit from the USA,..Life here in the Gulf is good...if you are willing to make a few minor adjustments.....like your kids don't have to go through a metal detector at school....you will probably not get "capped" in a road incident....getting robbed at an ATM is headline news..(almost never happens)...NEVER....your furlough notice never happens....be a responsible guest citizen and life is good.....you might be surprised that the "other" airline east of here is filling their DEC slots with former employees that got fed up and migrated far east only to to realize what they lost here....:ok:

I'm following evening classes in a Belgian FTO and last week we heard 2 former students talking about a gulf airliner who should start to offer commuting contracts. Unfortunately this is all I know about it.


I'm interested in working and living in a gulf state.

So I've been looking up some information and living in Qatar state seems nice but the following question always returns; is it possible for me to find a job over there as an ab initio?
When I read the websites of some airliners they're all asking a certain number of hours or experience. Can someone tell me if it's possible or is there a thread where I can find more information about it?
