Why is the ''500 HOUR ON TYPE'' a Requirment

Easy: statistics show that the frequency of pilot error is significantly higher when a pilot has less than 500 hours in a type of aircraft; and the correlation is a lot greater that to total time. Insurance companies know this, and if you can get (statistically) safer pilots, and save money at the same time... that's a no-brainer.

Studies show that there is a peak in the accident scale in around 200 to 400 hours on type pilots, that might be a sensible why.

Or, there are enough pilots with at least 500 hrs on type and therefore the requirement.

Or sometimes the insurance is way cheaper for guys with at least 500 hrs on type, but its all about how many qualified guys there are looking for jobs.

Good luck and be patient

MrMutra 12th Dec 2010 22:15

Because they can get. So many pilots out of work no end of supply. However, dry market hours come down....

Also good excuse to sell line training 500 hours on type then get rid off you.....

fatbus 12th Dec 2010 23:03

because they can't get pilots with 1000 hrs on type

flyzede 13th Dec 2010 00:15

I guess fatbus is correct in the above post!
The day they can get enough 1000 hours type rated pilots is the day that the requirement will become "1000 HOUR ON TYPE".
With the number of CPL pilots growing every day, I believe that, in a near future, we'll have an airline asking for blue eyed pilots only, or any other stupid requirement of this kind...
Now more seriously, 500 hours (at least) on type helps you a lot. Altough you're still not the best pilot in the world, many stages of your learning process have been achieved with 500 hours.

Actually, as mentioned above it's an Insurance requirement.

The 500hrs isn't necessary but then the premiums go up

3MTA3 13th Dec 2010 06:57

Well, it looks like the same insurance companies don't have a problem insuring guys with 250 hours total time. As long as they pay to fly:E

ironbutt57 13th Dec 2010 11:42

I suspect it is a CAA requirement in most countries to "validate" or accept type ratings, also the cut-off for the requirement of "base training" (touch n go's)...

typhoonpilot 13th Dec 2010 13:45

Realistically it is often a regulator requirement. The logic being, "why hire a zero time foreigner when we could hire zero time locals?" When an airline goes to the regulator/government to say we need experienced foreign pilots it doesn't look real good for them to hire zero time in type guys. Thus the 500 or 1000 hour requirement. In some cases that can be lowered if they still aren't getting the guys or there are no locals what so ever to fill the positions.

However, a national carrier in the region hired pilots with no widebody time and put them on the B777. Not locals nor GCC nationals either.

Nightfire 14th Dec 2010 15:41

Yeah, but those guys had a few thousand hours on glass-cockpit jet aircraft.

bigbear71 15th Dec 2010 04:52

Yeah, but those guys had a few thousand hours on glass-cockpit jet aircraft
Yes and the last FM that wanted to change this rule has been sucked up......
Anyway this guys are flying better that many other experienced pilots...

Rules are for Pilots not for the airline,if they need they will put anyone on the air.....:ugh:

fatbus 15th Dec 2010 06:11

The latest at EK is a short course for 320 guys ( meaning they are getting a large munber of ) , hopefully they are not from the sub Continent as you don't really know if any of those hours are real! Don't really care if I get blasted for this or not, the truth is alot of these guys have lots and lots of fake time.

ironbutt57 15th Dec 2010 09:50

Widebody, narrowbody, bit more practice in energy management on the widebody and you're good to go, done both..whats the big deal...

whitecross 15th Dec 2010 18:50

Fatbus, what you are saying is 100% correct, and many are keeping quite , just for Favourism and Sectisisim, if you check the Roots when The Cheif Pilot or the HRM. who is from....... and Hires from......
