EK staff "travel"

Hi Everyone,

I discovered that our friends in EK staff travel yesterday decided to payload restrict many flights to Europe. I am sure that it had nothing whatsoever to do with the Eid holidays and trying to screw more money out of the staff for ID 50's.

A captain (who was travelling with a family member) then rang staff travel and told them that there was no payload restriction on his flight. What does he know? He is JUST the Captain :ugh:And his relative didn't get on. :{

Just to add to some of the other threads where the issue of school fees has popped up..... EK pay up to 90% of 55,000 AED. Please find out the cost of schooling here in Dubai. Believe me, it is dear. They don't pay 90% of everything.

For those of you applying here, please allow me to give you three pieces of advice...
1.) EK constantly move the goal posts.
2.) EK never miss an opportunity to screw you
3.) Don't come here unless you are desperate

I wish all of you a Very Happy Eid and please fly safely.

Ummm...Airline companies have been issuing embargoes on busy routes at busy times of the year for decades...no news on that subject...it's certainly a PITA, but nothing anyone can do from a Pilot's standpoint...ya gotta expect it and live with it...can't comment on the rest of your rant...but thank you for the best wishes...and the same to you...:ok:

Back in the old days there was no big cargo alotment on EUR flights as they used mainly Airbuses. Introducing the T7 the cargo capacity increased dramatically. At the same time EK retired the cargo A310 which served a lot of EUR destinations and the cargo demand shrinked. Now that it is picking up again the T7's get loaded with the increased demand. That is where a lot of payload restriction hits us ID travelers. EK boasts themselves as beeing the industry leaders in revenue management. Well, it seems that frozen fish and it's accompaning dry ice spills in more revenue than the refused standby employees in C and F. Guess what, i honestly think this is not possibly the case, but the fish is already on board..... so we get denied boarding. The system simply shows payload restriction. The dispatcher at the aircraft gets the final load some 25 minutes before ETD, which is generally too late to accomodate the standby passengers. I regularly leave with some 300 to 1200kg underload and denied standby passengers. I am sure this process could be improved, but there is a blatant lack of motivation to do so.

Understandable, but very low respect shown for employees. Why am i not surprised.

I am assuming you meant the captain in your story was operating, and his partner was paxing. Is that correct?

On the school fees, for secondary schooling, EK pay 100% to dhm27,000 and 90% of the remainder below dhm54,000. After that you pay the difference. It's in the staff hand book. Good reading when you want to pass on the FACTS.

I had something like this recently, while operating a flight to LHR. I got a call from Load Control, via the Dispatcher's mobile phone, they wanted to confirm that there was no RTOW restriction on our flight.
I pointed out that we were 15 tons under our MZFW and as this was an aircraft capable of flying 15 hours plus, it was impossible to be RTOW limited to Europe out of Dubai.
The thing is they must have those figures in front of them and been able to see that we were 100 tons less than any MTOW restrictions
I think it is just another example of cheap labour not understanding the job, so they make everything more complicated than it needs to be and put in rules, embargo's and restrictions to stop them ever having a chance to make a mistake they will be blamed for, regardless that the result is staff don't get to travel.
As always this is something that requires education and training.

Hi Halas,

Yes, the Captain was driving. His relative should have been in first class.

Thanks for the FACTS re the school ees. They are indeed in the handbook. Can you tell me any decent schooling in Dubai for the figure you mention?

My points (to elaborate) are:

1.) Usual "let us take every penny we can off the staff" Fish seem to be worth more than us.
2.) Do you think EK are going to keep up with all the crazy school fee rises?

Your point is valid, my friend. So are mine.

The school fees went up just as l arrived in 2002. There was a huge outcry from the pilots and other eligible employees. A few weeks later the company upped the ESA to match. There have been a few increases over the years, with the last being 2008.

So l suggest you take issue with HW, ops HR.

What school for the ESA? Depends on which type of schooling you want.
From what l understand American based education is VERY expensive, but l don't know directly.
For UK based schooling (Which we use, even though we are not Poms), DESC is reasonable at dhm59,079 plus bus dhm5,600 of which EK pay dhm4,000.
There may be cheaper options out there, but l think quality of education is paramount, and l am aware that you can pay a lot more than DESC and still get poor quality!

For the life of me I can not understand why EK screws it employees on the staff travel. It should be free in coach with free and unlimited jump seat travel. We all know why EK does this. First they want you to stay in Dubai and spend what little money you have left over. Another is that a lot of the 3rd world nationals at Emirates are very jealous that we get to leave the sand and they don't. Also the staff travel program is an another profit generating device to yet again screw its employees.
The school fees keep going up and up with the most American schools over 70,000 dhs and the British schools catching up very fast with their fees.
With regards to another thread you are not going to save very much money at Emirates.

777boyindubai, let me get this straight, you believe the company should leave perishible high revenue cargo behind, so relatively low revenue staff can get on??
While I agree with your complaint that staff travel tend to make it more difficult to get on flights at times than it should be, I don't believe if there are genuine weight restrictions that full revenue cargo should be of less priority than staff passengers.

777boyindubai 10th Sep 2010 13:09

Hi Kiwi,

No, I don't believe EK should leave high paying cargo off just to put staff on. My point is that I was told nearly every European flight after Eid was load restricted. Some flights...ok. But nearly all?
And one of those was a 380!

Hope that clears it up.

And Halas, your points and analysis of the school fees was spot on. Thanks.
