Emirates to delay B777 deliveries


Seattle: Emirates will slow the delivery of new Boeing 777 aircraft next year, Gulf News has learnt.
Speaking a day before the delivery of the airline's 75th Boeing 777, Abdullah Al Shams, manager of the Emirates Boeing fleet acceptance team at the Everet factory near Seattle, said that from 2010 deliveries would be delayed by a few months.
"We do have deliveries until April 2010 and then we have a slowdown on the deliveries for the following year," Al Shams said.
"The slowdown in deliveries is related to the credit crunch and with the airline business today we do have a little bit of a slowdown on the different aspects of the business."
The delivery of an aircraft such as the 777 must be accompanied by full payment for it, explained Al Shams

"This plane is going to be paid off tomorrow," he said. "It's going to be delivered tomorrow morning. We're going to take off within four hours of the payoff."
Aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing are facing an increase in cancellations of orders for new airplanes. Boeing's report of its first quarter results showed a 50 per cent decline in profit, due primarily to the slowdown in new orders.
As a result, the company is consulting with customers on revised payment options and arrangements, said Boeing officials in Seattle.
The list price for a Boeing 777 ranges from about $250 million (Dh920 million) to $275 million, but Shams declined to comment on whether Emirates has been granted any discount on current orders, which those involved say will bring the fleet to over 100.
Emirates however, has not cancelled any orders, stressed Al Shams, as some other airlines have done.
"At this moment our figures and our delivery are still there, nothing has been cancelled," he said. "All the airlines in general have deferred their delivery timetables."
The airline plans to have a full fleet of between 106 and 108 777s, he added, and despite delays they are on their way to achieving that.
"We will be hitting a milestone in the aviation of 777s in August," Al Shams said.
"We are going to be the largest in the market after Singapore Airlines."
In August Emirates will receive its 78th Boeing 777.
"Unless someone comes along and buys more, but with today's economic situation and the crunch I believe we will be holding that position for a while."
Despite the delays in aircraft deliveries, Shams remains upbeat about Emirates' prospects in a region where the industry is still growing. "We were affected too [by the global recession] but we are still holding our position and we are providing the same service around the world," he said. "We are filling seats."

AA get your facts right mate - for you info the first A330 fo's to 777 have their upgrade interviews planned already and by the way I did not say anything about DEC,s.If MM wants or needs DEC's that another issue. My response was to M warning about A330 guys upgrade on the 777, fact is the 777 fo's are going to be taking longer and if what you say in corrct about DEC's then the 777 fo's will be alot longer. also chill mate!

I have every reason to take ADump's information seriously. I saw one of the new DECs in the BS castle the other day. I couldn't believe my ears and eyes.

This one is going to hurt really badly for all FO delayed for their upgrades. I recommend everyone to check out the seniority list the coming weeks.

Really tough for FOs, disappointing, demoralizing and it certainly taints the way they see the company just when the company needs everyone working together!!! With a down turn I can see why they may delay upgrades, however I cannot understand and cannot see any justification for DECs when we have a wealth of capable FOs already here and waiting.

On a brighter note, I was lead to believe that due to the binding contracts signed with the aircraft manufacturers EK cannot cancel orders as it would lead to penalty payments which are crippling, therefore the only thing it can do is delay delivery. Thus the aircraft will still arrive, if slightly later than expected, hence there may still be upgrade posibilties in the future. But this will mean nothing to you if you have already seen some DEC bypass you.
(Won't rant on about DECs too much but haven't seen one yet who has impressed me!!)

I have some figures. Over the last year therer were approx 400 or so new hires. Approx 19 were DEC or appear to be so from the list. Thats no more than 5%. Having flown with two of them, the last DECs were here in October 08 delayed from April.

5 star, was the DEC you met here on the re interview process or checked out and on line. If the latter It is probably someone from not later than oct 08 or off the 310.
This rumour affects me as well and doesnt tally with my own enquiries , which are nearer obogs comments.
Please dont dash people aspirations by rehashing duff info. Does anyone really have any gen.

We all new this was policy when we joned . lets deal with the facts not attacks.

Keep an eye on the seniority list the coming weeks. I guarantee you it was a fresh DEC. Even if it's only ONE (I strongly doubt he will be the only one) it's one too many in this downturn and a flagrant breach of the company policy.
On the other hand, in the mean time we all know what kind of crap TCAS is selling in DXB. I still can't believe he gets away with all of this.

Upgrading is >4 years now and increasing rapidly, mainly on the Boeing this time. And that's a fact!

The lack of informations from the company leads us to this situation.
The DEC's negative impact on FO's career is a pure fact and is accentuated by the annonced slowdown in 777 deliveries, also a pure fact.
Why to shut down a thread about facts related to the 777 delays ?
