Moving a car from the US

Has anyone shipped a car to EK from the US? The cost in not bad $2500, but don't know what other cost the EK would at to the bill (tax, etc.).
Thanks for any info!!!

Depends on the type of automobile.

Keep in mind that cars manufactured for the US market may have many different engine/polution/suspension components than those available elsewhere, so parts might become a problem...not to mention proper maintenance service.

Better to purchase locally, in my opinion.

I had a Cadillac Eldorado in Saudi for a long time, and FedEx/DHL was my friend for many parts.
The Eldorado was fun to drive however....with an 8.2 litre engine, it passed everything but the gas station....:}

Thanks for the info 411, the car is in new condition, its a big SUV and can't get what I want for it here in the US. It's paid off and would last me at least 5 years before any mx is need. There is also a Chev. dealership in the UAE.

Registration costs at this end are around 550 AED and there is 5% duty tax on the appraised value of the car.

There's some useful information on this site:

If they just hadn't used that bright yellow tarp, they might have got away with it!:D

You will have no problems MX wise if it is a Chevy SUV. Even Hummers are quite common around here now.

Hummers are extremely common ;)

Gosse, how old is your car? - from 2010 you will not be able to sell your car if it is over 10 years old.

You also cannot import a car that is older than 5 years..

Do you know if the max 5 year old car for import/10 year old no sale rule applies to Oman as well?

Parts can be a hugh issue. Corvette got hit by one of the incredibly talented local drivers. Been at the dealer for 6 mo. waiting for parts. Have Fedexed parts by myself twice already, but they always find something else missing...:ugh:

I brought 2 cars over. Piece of cake. Cost $3000 to ship both. UAE customs charge you 5% of the "assessed" value - yeah I paid 800 dirhams per car (what a joke as each car worth in excess of $25000). The rest is normal registration etc that is required of ANY car here. If you need further details, PM me. Was a good move on our part.

5 year old

My car is over 5 years old, where can I find this rule?

Thanks!
