Major breach in bank security.

There has been a major breach in bank security in local UAE accounts with HSBC - ALL customers are advised to change their ATM PIN by tomorrow.

HSBC are saying that they are sending SMS to all customers but many have not received one.

I know several people who have had money taken out of their account withing the last 2 days so best to act ASAP guys.

I have heard that this also applies to other UAE banks so it might be prudent for their customers to change their PIN's as well.

be careful out there....:ok:

Banks in UAE warn customers of card fraud
By Gaurav Ghose, Financial Features Editor

Dubai: Shannon Lowe, an expatriate living in Al Barsha, Dubai, is one of the growing number of victims of card fraud that has occurred in the past few days in the UAE, and several banks are warning their customers and advising them to take precautions.

"My debit card was copied either at the Marina or at Al Wasl Spinney's ATM and then used many times in Egypt for a total value of Dh15,000 in various transactions, in shops such as pharmacies and sports stores," she wrote to Gulf News.

She can't recall which bank's ATM she used since she uses several banks' machines.

Her bank, Lloyds TSB Middle East, reimbursed the entire amount within a day.

Notification

HSBC, Emirates NBD, Dubai Islamic Bank and National Bank of Abu Dhabi are among the banks that have notified their customers of recent attacks and have advised them to change their PIN numbers to avoid falling victim to this fraud.

And most banks whose customers have been victims are investigating these cases.

"The magnitude of the problem is not so big," said Abdullah Qasim, chairman of Network International, a subsidiary of Emirates NBD.

"But our bank has advised customers who have used the ATMs of a particular bank so far - not sure whether other banks' ATMs - to either change their PIN, or in some cases have been issued new cards."

Caution at ATMs

HSBC has instructed its customers via SMS to change their PIN numbers at any of its ATMs and, according to a statement released to the press, has refunded the "small number of our customers that have been affected."

All banks reiterate that customers must exercise caution when operating ATMs.

"The bank advises customers to remain vigilant and to contact their bank if they notice anything unusual about an ATM which could indicate a card reader or camera has been fixed," said Julian Ashall, COO at Lloyds TSB Middle East, told Gulf

HSBC

I am one of the unfortunate victims belonging to HSBC that has been conned. When i went to see the bank to fill out the ATM fraud form this morning, I was informed that lots of people had been conned, yet in the paper it states not a lot. I was told the money will be back into my account in 7 to 14 days (I can guess which one that will be). I was told "we have known about this for 4 days" well excuse me but where was the SMS to inform me 4 days ago to change my pin number I asked the reply was a shaking of the head, oh what to do!:ugh:

Dear customer!

surely not 11th Sep 2008 15:57

NBAD were pretty good I think.

Two texts rcvd on the 9th at 1909 local time, the first one advised that my Visa Electron card was blocked from working outside UAE, the second told me I should change my Pin number asap at any NBAD ATM in UAE.

Like Priapism I thought maybe it is a hoax or a scam, but driving in to work the next day it was on the radio, so off I went to NBAD branch and changed my pin. Took about 2 minutes maximum to change it, and luckily my account was untouched, however a colleague has had 20,000 dirhams removed from his account and his European Bank Account is also blocked and he is sweating on hearing if that has been tampered with.

Thankfully due to my crap salary there isnt much money to steal in my account. I remember a year or so ago I had an unauthorised transaction on my HSBC card from overseas in the usa, sounded like an internet order and i hadnt been in the usa at all at that stage yet the bank declined to refund the $400 as i was a pilot and must have been there.
No way to fight it without spending a few thousand. I hate the ME.

local news report

The Gulf News reported that this massive fraud had only affected 12 individuals, I wonder ???

I find the only thing to do is drink heavily, as often as possible. Fortunately in this devout muslim country, alcohol is plentiful and the duty-free allowance is a generous 4 litres. String each day together until you can leave and never look back. It really is a ****hole.

I agree 100 percent and the problem lies between the ears of our friends here. This area will be always the same and no good hope at all. Guys wake up ! It s a shame that so many nice fellows are forced to be in this place.
