Commuting to Toronto
 

Hello Fellow EK Pilots......is there anyone out there who is able to leave their family in Toronto and commute with any degree of success?.....Dadster.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that mean you have to pay taxes in Canada? Kind of defeats the purpose of coming to EK for most people.

I do not know anyone who commutes to Canada but perhaps there is someone. Toronto flights are only 3 a week at present and I'm told quite full. So, with a somewhat educated guess, I think it would be difficult and expensive at the very least.

Thanks for the response.....the fact is I have applied to Canada for PR so will have to pay tax....family will have to live there for at least four years so just wondering whether anyone actually does it.....Dadster.

Since you won't be physically in Canada for, at a rough guess, 10 months of the year while working, you won't be eligible for citizenship in 4 years anyway. Not the idea of Canadian PR is to stay long enough to get citizenship and then b*gger off....

In any case the toronto commute wouldn't be reasonably doable. The flights are always full going to YYZ in the summer and coming from YYZ in the winter and are only 3 times a week. You'd be lucky to be at home more than a couple of days a month and the costs/sleep patterns would kill you.

family will have to stay in canada for at least 4 years !!!!!! what the F....#*& with that ???? canada needs people to sustain a certain growth and build a future for this country.................it's not meant for people to get a citizenship of convenience as somebody else mentioned.
As for the people who always bitch about paying taxes in canada, well, your kids might not be able to get cheap quality education and have a public healthcare system even if it's not perfect and has its own problems.

Commute to Toronto? Da flying time won' kill you but da recovery after being stuffed in economy (all dat his lef') for 15 hours on what appear to be a "EK 5_ _" flight, certainly will.

Dear VV, perhaps you could send this link to your MP. It's only when you move to the third world you realize how little value we put on our citizenship. In the MiddlEast, it's like every second person you meet is Canadian (but thinks hockey is played on grass!). And somehow, every pilot from a third world country which does not have the UK passport has the Canadian one (and they love to rub it in your face, telling you how stupid we are to give them and their families free healthcare and higher education).
What is the Canadian passport? : an insurance policy
Why the Canadian passport instead of the US one? : it's cheaper (read free)
BTW, "free" is the single most used word when people talk about Canada...I remember it use to cost me a lot!

For a while there I thought the KKK had a Canuck branch.

Dadster - there are a number of guys who commute to Europe, UK and Aus. The further you are, the harder it is. Given the frequency to YYZ and your relative subload priority, you are in for a hard time. Be prepared to not see your family for weeks on end.

Have to say I fully understand the desire to secure your family's future. Some of the more xenophobic among our bretheren have no clue how hard life can be for those who draw lousy cards in life's lottery.:ok:

It's hardly xenophobic to expect someone who wishes to gain Canadian citizenship to actually wish to become Canadian!!! It's also worth dadster knowing that only time spent in Canada, and paying Canadian taxes (on housing allowance as well as salary), will count towards citizenship. He could easily lose permanent residency if he isn't actually there.

Where is the xenophobia? No one mentionned his race, color, gender or orientation. We just pointed out that it was not fairplay to dump the missus and monsters in Mississauga for 4 yrs and pull everybody out ASAP once you have the passports (but it is legal I assume).
