GF Looking at A340-600

Being reported today in Aviation Daily that GF is about to order 8 A340-600's to use on existing long haul routes plus open up new destinations in US and Canada.

sandyballs 10th Jun 2008 10:25

Hmmm Why?
Everyone else is thinking about dumping the useless piece of crap!

Count von Altibar 10th Jun 2008 16:10

This aircraft has been a stinker for Virgin Atlantic and others, stay clear GF!

ironbutt57 10th Jun 2008 18:25

Doesnt matter if it stinks if you can get it for pennies on the dollar....Thai flogging their -500's as well....

Mow 11th Jun 2008 07:35

As an aircraft it is piece of crap... All agree... But GF they need more aircrafts for the time being, to meet the demand...

New destinations!! for the same number of aircrafts... How? .. most probably a lot of cancellations in the summer.

tbaylx 11th Jun 2008 08:26

That isn't entirely true IB..it stinks cause it burns so much fuel. Even if you get the damn thing for free it will kill you in the fuel costs to run it vs the payload.

Sal-e 11th Jun 2008 11:07

They had better use her properly then hey. Keep it on the routes best suited for it and market the hell out of that route to keep it full. Ah Shangai looks like the perfect candidate.

skywaytoheaven 11th Jun 2008 18:44

Everyone says this a/c burns so much fuel, but does it burn more than a 744? I doubt it, and plenty of those still flying. I heard the A346 also had serious tech issues.

Panama Jack 11th Jun 2008 19:55

Any thoughts about which destinations GF would be likely to open in the USA and Canada? I wonder if IAH is in the cards?

bus787 13th Jun 2008 13:04

340-600 to fly bah doh route for visa renewal

ironbutt57 13th Jun 2008 19:42

hey hey thats via Kish Island..(and in the future Jarada)..but seriously we could fill any kind of high density planes on certain Asian routes..I know try getting an ID90 on some...or even travlling on an annual leave ticket:bored:

Londonlads 13th Jun 2008 20:25

Or, as QR did (does?)... DOH-DXB!

ba7rain 13th Jun 2008 23:59

A340-600 :=

A340-500 :ok:

skywaytoheaven 14th Jun 2008 07:47

mmmmm, actually both are crap (compared to the variety of 777) thats why hardly anybody has bought them.

Tintin 14th Jun 2008 09:23

well at 250M for 340 and 420M+ for the 777 its only a question of how much your fuel is discount.

Having flying both well both AC are fine from the cockpit point of view

Jetjock330 14th Jun 2008 12:42

Both 500 and 600 are nice to fly, but different in their own ways, very different!

The problem with the 500 is that when it takes-off, the price of oil is $50 per barrel and it only lands again when the price it $150 per barrel! Talk about range!

Desert Diner 14th Jun 2008 13:00

You can either make money or lose money with the 345/346. It's only a matter of how much you pay for them and how you use them.

A300Man 16th Jun 2008 05:40

Perhaps GF could take-on the A346's that are rumoured to be coming available next door! I am sure the new Oryx Leasing Company would do a very good deal for GF............

Mr. R 16th Jun 2008 10:45

I think Aitalia are letting go of their 777s at discounted lease rates from what I read at airliners.net

Panama Jack 16th Jun 2008 17:04

With a number of airlines loosing their shirts or selling everything up to and including office furniture at bargain basement prices, there should be a number of decent airplanes coming up available for GF and other airlines . . . if only we can react at industry speed to these offers. That should keep us from being captive customers to ex-RJ crap.
