Healthcare Muscat
 

Can anyone tell me what healthcare is like in Muscat. Are there any European/British doctors in the hospitals?

Healthcare is ok.

You can choose from public clinics where most of the doctors are Indian. Some are excellent and some should be locked up - like the spastic who wanted to conduct exploratory spinal surgery on me after me having torn a muscle.

The Armed Forces Hospital is great. Very nice Irish lady in charge of ER there who really looked after me.

Muscat Private Hospital has European and US doctors and also Australians and maybe Kayways :)

Our unit deal directly with Muscat Private but remember that the ambulance service here is "sectoral" so they will take you to the nearest hospital. This is how I ended up with the mad scientist doctor and is what worries me sometimes, especially if I was unconscious.

All in all though, the system here is excellent - if you get the right hospital.

We had public health car under our government scheme and at one point I had to use The Royal Hospital (liver transplant :p) and I have to say all of my dealings with the place were first class and the facilities of a high standard.

Having said this, like any public service facility it can be hit and miss and I am sure for every bad story there is a good one.

Well unless you're local, you don't want to try the Royal Hospital. It is now a teaching hospital and the possible residents could potentially kill you, I have two friends who cheated death there. (literally)

The private healthcare is excellent though. Muscat Private Hospital and Shatti Hospital have great service but are both expensive. (not that it should matter)

Try Royal Hospital, and expect to be turned away, even if you have an emergency. I've been there.

Shatti is half a hospital, and Muscat Private Hospitals reputation is not exactly excellent. If you choose to work for WY, these two hospitals are not included on the company list of approved clinics. You are then expected to enjoy the treatment from the wonders of local clinics like Al Amal and Badr Al Sama.

And they truly S@ck!

Check REALLY well what kind of health care your company will pay for. It's essential when you have an emergency at 3 AM, and all the approved clinics are closed.

And, oh, the ambulance service is not really an ambulance service. They are ment for road accidents only, not for house calls. If you get sick at home, you better have good neighbours.

I am extremely surprised that WY's health cover doesn't include private hospitals. Shows what they think of pilots.

Very true. Thailand is another place that they go. You can only sympathize with them. They get very low levels of cover here.
