All stop, Bush is here.

SZR closed, public holiday declared, all hail Bush!

Dubai is grinding to a halt tomorrow as JB Junior's in town making his way from AUH to DXB.

Apparently off to the Burj al Arab where he'll no doubt have to buy a voucher to get in (apologies if that was a secret, the destination bit not the voucher thing).

brabazon2 13th Jan 2008 13:17

Schools closed. Good luck getting us to the airport for flights with standard pick up times!

All stop, Bush is here
It isn't his fault. They still pay attention to the guy:mad:.

Terd Furguson 13th Jan 2008 14:20

FINALLY.....a day off!!!

I can't remember how long it has been since the last public holiday.:ugh:

Pretty pathetic commentary on the design of the city's road infrastructure if you have to close the whole city for one idiot! If it's that much of a security risk.....don't have him!!!

At least I get the day off.....oh yeah, as a pilot, I don't!!!

...combined with RAIN, Monday just might mean meltdown in Sandbox.

It was enough to close the airport down today. :ugh:

linedriva 14th Jan 2008 03:01

Well evrything is shut down. Most roads are closed. It's just like being under house arrest!

Shk Zayed is deserted. I don't think I'll ever see that again. Hope everyone enjoys the extra day off!

6853 14th Jan 2008 05:02

Hey look President Bush, Dubai doesn't have a traffic problem, don't know what all those crazy spoilt expats(lazy pilots) are always complaining about! So please tell them back at home it's not true and send us some more pilots.

GMDS 14th Jan 2008 05:22

But stop sending us Bush&Co, ah yes, same goes for Clinton&Co....
You alls say "... love it or leave it".
As you love it so much, just don't leave and the world would be a better place.

QNH1013 14th Jan 2008 07:28

Took pictures of an empty Sheikh Zayed road, all 14 lanes. Nothing. Doubt I'll see that again any time soon.

777-200LR 14th Jan 2008 08:02

QNH 1013, plz post those pics!

Love the post 6853!

The village idiot has left the building. Dubai drivers can start killing each other again.

Best post ever ....:D

VoxPopuli, thank you for the smile!!!

Cheers.

Presumably Bush has used his fleeting visit to expound upon the many and varied benefits of Democracy. Soon we shall be enjoying the vote and industrial representation. Naturally the American enthusiasm for people-power would be pushed by them and embraced in kind here.

PositiveRate876 14th Jan 2008 23:37

Full system meltdown ensued as briefed.. :ugh:

disconnected 15th Jan 2008 06:08

Indeed. This morning pilots were taking up to 3 hours to get home from flights. Sharjah, Emirates Road and SZR all giant parking lots.

A land of contrasts - yesterday not a vehicle, today a massive used car lot.

The glitz and glamour all looked a little false as the basic infrastructure cannot cope with rain!

Kamelchaser 15th Jan 2008 06:23

Conspiracy theory number 2016

You'd have to ask why this bastion of Arab capitalism would shut down for a day so GWB could whisk on through. I mean it's never happened in any other country (to the best of my limited knowledge)

Surely the only reason you would do something quite so drastic is if you had a credible and serious terrorist threat?

Dubai certainly wouldn't want its carefully developed tourism industry affected should someone take a pot-shot at GW.

USApatriot 15th Jan 2008 06:50

Neat

They certainly know how to roll out the red carpets for a guest.

Perks of being POTUS I guess,

Last time he came here, flights in and out were stopped for an hour or two while Air force One landed.

411A 15th Jan 2008 09:11

IF the US Navy ever decides to actually leave the Arabian Gulf area, all you folks working in the area had better learn Farsi, real quick.:E
