Etihad Accommodation
 

Hi All

I have been given a start date with Etihad in Mid March and would like to get an idea of how things are with Etihad's company provided accommodation. I will probably look at going into a villa as I am married with 2 small kids, one 6 and the other 2.

Can someone who presently works at Etihad please give me an indication of what I can expect, ie will we be in a hotel to start with and if so for how long? What is the current waiting time for accommodation? and is this likely to change.

PS I understand this is a rumour site but facts would be greatly appreciated rather than the same few who have nothing better to do than winge and moan.

Be prepared to stay 3 months minimum in a dirty place and then you will be able to fight with the useless corrupted housing department.

Compound Villas
 

"They might give you a villa on moon base B if any available."

Are these the only villas and location available? Are there any plans of building a compound with villas just for flight crew similar to what Emirates did with Silicon Oasis?

Take the advice! Take a job with the real airline down the road but if you must come initially keep your family at home until you have dealt with the housing dept directly, this will take the pressure off you while you try and find something acceptable for your family, housing is a REAL problem in Abu Dhabi due to very poor forward planning, good luck!!

Khalifa B is full,and yes there are plans to build a compound but if started you would be lucky if you get in the villa by 2011!

you have obviously been through the interview process etc, etc, hence the job in March, how come now you decide to ask questions on a forum , that could have been addressed with EY ???

I had the same question and I had a rough start at the beginning. EY is working on solutions, the problem is Abu Dhabi: there are simply no places and they put us in temporary places overall in the city, which is not very good. I had a few meetings with them and all went ok. I few days ago I have received a nice offer from facility department to move to a villa and I am happy now. If you show some initiative there will be a solution, if you just sit and wait, it may take longer.

I am sure initiative works well if in the right place and right time. New joiners will realise the accommodation shortage is reality not just a whinge. Some strike it lucky, others don't.
When you have wife and kids in tow, wife may not think this place is quite as painted when - A. She may end up living in a hotel room for an unspecified period of time or B. She has to stay wherever you are now for an unpecified period of time until accommodation becomes available.
You may call us whingers, but a whinging wife is far worse :}

Mine is not whinging but she is sorry for me to have to work in such a bad environment.
Even if your family is happy to make the move with you, they gonna change their minds after
a short while here, just the time for your roster to change 20 times in 10 days,
the time that the housing department forgets about you and your family in your dirty hotel room,
the time to be threatened of being fired,
the time you realize that your contract means nothing,
the time for your leave not to be approved and, if , by any chance they are, your ticket is gonna be subload,
the time you see that you spend so little and bad quality time home coz you are exhausted.
Think twice before coming here. You may get a rating and fly big planes but is it worth loosing your soul,
health and finally family....?

may i ask which fleet has the worst working condition? and how many flight hours is A330 fleet doing monthly? thanks a lot.

You are absolutely right on this bit.
Shk Zayed was against the breakup of GF along with other old-timers (rulers) in the Gulf, but his heirs insisted on creating an emirate airline after failing it 10 or more years earlier. Shk Zayed died at the end of 2004 and these same heirs decided to go for it full power. At the end of 2004, they knew it all. They told GF to go.
One thing is to say something and another thing is to do it. They said it, but they never had a proper alternative plan, the human and material structure, and the competent people to accomplish such a mission. Along with this, they continue to recruit incompetent and inexperienced staff and they never really trained people properly to deal with the staff generally. They never understood the multi-cultural needs of the different staff. Everything was just a mess. I know two ex-EY staff just couldn't endure it anymore despite all the patience and understanding they put forward.
The people who had to do their job (Chairman, VPs, Managers) never did it and left it to run to the lower ranks with the obvious very poor results.
Up road, despite not having what one likes, things are clearer and straightforward. Things deteriarated a bit lately, but one can see the orginal 1991 (human) investement paid off.
EY and many other airlines should run internal surveys on all issues involving all divisions, departments and sections and criss-cross them to get everyone's point of view. The surveys would help managers to dedicate time and resources to help staff feel better.
Ask crews and staff in general what they think of the different departments they have to deal with professionally and personally.
Management will think this is a waste of time and energy because they are afraid of being on the spotlight themselves of poor results. The few good managers would outstand and should be rewarded. Too risky for the vast majority of managers:ouch:.
It is important to have a home, not just a place to "crash" because you are so exhausted from work:confused:.

The Ops/Trng Dept would never survey the troops, they would be too embarassed at the answers that came back....I dare you to ask us!

Couldnt agree more Cikpigeon! you cant blame Abu Dhabi for Etihads shortsighted penny pinching attitude towards Housing.
They could have built Etihad compounds many years ago in anticipation of the expansion but instead chose to f.... around for 3 years and now they are paying huge hotel bills for arriving crew :ugh:

i agree that the housing is a problem not just for EY but for all. the need to increase the current 115/120 is extremly important and a must. At the same time we went through this 2 years ago and since then the situation did improve and i hear of no complaints from those pilots who moved to Delma buildings and to the villas. The villas went very fast and now there is a waiting list to get in. So come on guys it is a personal choice whether you like the accomadation or not. Its true that something needs to be done soon and it will be done. There was a meeting with new pilots who joined and lets see what comes out in the next few weeks. So there is good and lets hope for all of us things continue to improve on the housing front...
