Dubai inflation @ 30% today

Check your visa bill boys!
To add to the cost of living here ShowTime TV bill jumped 30% from 170/mth to 220/mth without warning. Reason given is "If you read the contract We have the right to adjust costs from time to time at our discretion". No notice is neccessary, it is our right! :ugh:
I assume the cost of satelite signals has gone up with the drop in the Dirham..

atiuta 29th Oct 2007 09:16

Showtime? What's that?

Wiley 29th Oct 2007 09:31

My E Vision jumped from 139 dits a month to 185 about three months ago, also with no fanfare - and they didn't even bother to add a couple more Hindi or Arabic channels to the package as they used to do each time they hiked the price.

Car service and maintenance? What used to cost around 800 dits now costs close to 2000.

Just got my Choithrams bill today - double what it was for the same month last year. I accept that's not a scientific comparison, (obviously, I can't say I ordered exactly the same food), but I find I'm paying as much at the supermarket living alone as I was with two in the house this time last year.

If that's 9% inflation, I'd hate to see what 30% looks like.

I'd love to see some time and motion expert come out with a figure for what the daily traffic snarls are costing local business. I for one simply am not going any more to places I used to go to quite frequently.

For people on our salaries, it's a bit of a pain. God only knows what it must mean for the poor bastards who are on 800 dits a month. I heard on the Beeb today that 1000 construction workers have gone on strike in Dubai and are blocking roads and have pelted riot police with rocks.

I suppose that problem will be fixed the way it always has been - three quick charter flights to points East for Emirates.

Small bag of Lebanese bread in the small shop down stairs
Was 1.00 AED
Now 1.50 AED
changed around 24-26 OCT

Its not only our cable TV but basic things jumping by drastic amounts.

TangoUniform 29th Oct 2007 14:14

If you read some of the news stories about the strike, the construction companies are in a bit of a bind. The "south Asian" workers are not flocking towards Dubai anymore due to the rise of inflation and jobs can be found in India, because of its booming economy. These workers are not fearing deportation anymore. Dubai could come to a quick halt if things don't change. Inflation, wage stagnation, no workers, traffic, unfinished construction projects. The dream could turn into a nightmare if wages and conditions don't change for the better.

On our end of it, take a look at the KAL contract that continues to be pushed. $13k a month after all taxes paid for 777 pilots and off basings as well. Even Singapore is losing pilots due to the KAL contract, not many, but a few. How many here are contemplating the move? Hmm, around $8k for a first year DEC or $13k at KAL and others. Me thinks that TCAS need to have a serious talk with HR.:uhoh:

fatbus 29th Oct 2007 14:36

Where does the KAL contract say 13k US after tax?

TangoUniform 29th Oct 2007 14:42

The taxes are paid to Korea by the contract company. After they take their cut and Korea takes their cut, what is left is $13k.

Wizofoz 29th Oct 2007 18:04

Exactley- It's 13K after KOREAN taxes paid. For most countries you are going to have to then pay the difference between Korean tax (about 15%?) and local rates (E.G 45% in Australia) if you take a basing there.

It is a good contract, but that takes a lot of the shine off for many people.

KAL Contract

My friend just got the KAL contract in the mail. The reality is different than promised while in interview. There is a lot of scam on the contract at KAL. If you are not B777 qualified you'll pay your own rating. Secondly if you leave the company within 2 years (first they said within 1 year) you have to pay 20000 USD. This is not degreasing monthly. That's the cost of uniform and company training! Also you are paid 7800 USD until line checked. I cannot remember all "scam" but there is more. Also you work much more than at EK. it's not any greener that side of the fence... I just write all this based upon my friends comments tonite!

It is 12970U$ without loss of license or 12600 with loss of license.
Korean tax is already paid
12 nights in row at home a month. (2 days leave taken a mnth)
You go home on the crewlist, uniform on.
If your a/c type flies to your base, add 2-3 nights /mnth.
2 -3 times a year you might back-to-back string of days off.
Allowances +/- 800 U$/mnth.
No expat has failed any check for the past 18 months.
2 guys deliberately pulled flack, to be booted and not pay the 15000U$.
(20000U$ if you were not rated.)
Average 3% increase per year.
This keeps on increasing after your 1st 5 year contract.

oh the tax thing is bull.
Only Canadians have a real tax problem.
The boys will show you how, this forum is NOT the place for tax discussions.

fatbus 30th Oct 2007 14:05

What do you mean the tax thing is bull and that only canadians have a tax problem. Canada use to have a treaty that made it tax free, now you pax country tax and as far i as know the same as the UK/US/and AUS. To add to this you use to get 13 months and Korean tax was 15%

£ reaches 26 year US$ high...

It is predicted the Aussie Dollar will be on par with the USD within 6 mths. Unheard of before.

member#987 31st Oct 2007 00:44

Fatboy

You are correct, the Canadian 50yr tax treaty has come to an end.

I shall guide you: if you are US go thru GAP, if UK use CCL.

Now son get off your fat ass and do your own case home work.

At the interview go to BBJ "the local" talk to the guys. You will be amazed.

fatbus 31st Oct 2007 01:38

Trust me I have , but thanks

Try 3 months or even Christmas (if the Aus Reserve Bank raises rates on the 6th Nov). $0.934 at one stage today... up 17.7% in in 2.5 months!
