Which aircraft do you have an opportunity to upgrade on?
There is definitely an active upgrade program at Qatar Airways, and depending on fleet probably about 4-6 years wait at present.......there are a lot of hoops to jump through and failure is always a possibility
If you are able to upgrade at present company on Boeing / Airbus you will soon have many options to join as Captain in various airlines
There are many other factors such as whether you prefer long haul, on a wide body vs narrow body etc...

They're paid with the salary at the end of the month. Usually, it's enough for a decent meal in most of the places (not em all).

Thanks Python27. Do you know what's the lay over pay?

Varies per destination

How long does it take for them to send the online test after you apply? I haven’t heard now in 3 weeks.

I am also stating that most DEC joiners on the Triple 7 nowadays are already widebody Captains (more competitive). Current fleet growth is on the T7 and a few 747F. 737 guys were being placed on the 787 in the past. It's a question of supply and demand.

As I said I am sure things will change if/when the 737 and new 787-9 arrive.

Not saying it's impossible to join as a current narrow body Capt especially if you have previous widebody experience as an FO.

"Be type rated and current on the B777/B787 with minimum of 500 hours in command on type, or on B767/B757/B737NG/B747-400/800 with a minimum of 2000 hours in command on type."

Also, none of the other requirements states you have to have widebody experience.

What the website says and what they do maybe 2 different things. I am guessing your reading from the add referenced QR7735. That is an old add and been on the website a long time. If you have those requirements, apply, but does not mean you'll get an invite. Lots of First Officers getting upgrades on the 787 at the moment.

Not really

The QR7735 has been there for a long time but they removed the 737 from the list of accepted types for applying and they were not even considering 737 Capts for months. Few weeks ago it was included again and they are now inviting them.

Help needed!

Hi guys, anyone have any idea when the second officer position may be available?? Since last time it was on 2014 and I personally know a guy who finished Flight school in 2015 and went to the second officer interview and got hired by 2016!!!!
You know these type of people wont help or answer anything he refuses to comment. And yeah he is not Qatari or has a Qatari mother.

I really need any information about the second officer position and how can I apply like that guy did without Online application?!

Im without a job for 2 years now and Any info could help.

DillingerAdam 22nd Oct 2017 14:31

hi Skyseeker95, I know for sure SO position isn't available for the public last when it was at 2014 as you stated, now you have to be a Qatari national or have parents working with QatarAirways, and last option is MPL (multi-pilot licence) in partnership with QatarAirways provided by CTC Aviation I believe ur employment is guaranteed since I know one person from the UK got his job when he finished his training with CTC Aviation.

wish you a good luck mate, and if you have any question I will be here .

Gentlemen,

I am a prospective DEC for the B787 and have a joining date for November 2017.
Can anybody PM me regarding:
1. How many hours do B787 captains average per month?
2. How many days off can I expect per month, along with the usual days one can expect get off together.
3. What is the average take home salary for a B787 Captain?
4. Can one travel without any restrictions on off days?
5. What are the B787 destinations?
6. What is the minimum and maximum layover/night halt duration? How many layovers can one expect each month?
7. How many same day return flights can one expect on the B787 each month?
8. Are there frequent roster/schedule changes?
9. Flight schedules when released are for what duration typically? (eg a month or more/less?)
10. Is it easy getting annual leave?
11. Do wives actually need your permission each time they want to travel outside the country?
12. Are company provided apartments/villas of a good standard and well located?
13. Is it better to look for accommodation at the pearl/west bay area?
14. Is there much for wives to do in Qatar, barring going to malls?
15. My confirmation letter states the B787 fleet has been assigned to me. Is it possible that QR will change this once I get there to say a A320 or B777?
16. Can wives frequently travel with you on your layover flights?

Thank you.

acarsnocomm

Don't stress about anything

1. How many hours do B787 captains average per month?

Can't answer, I am 320 fleet

2. How many days off can I expect per month, along with the usual days one can expect get off together.

I think minimum 8 and some are paired as 4 together

3. What is the average take home salary for a B787 Captain?

Not sure, but the money is ok

4. Can one travel without any restrictions on off days?

Yes once you have gained your multi exit permit, you can leave as many times as you like on your days off. Be aware should you have any sort of incident and pending an investigation, your permit can be cancelled and unable to leave UFN.

5. What are the B787 destinations?

Many nice ones, I think best fleet to be honest.

6. What is the minimum and maximum layover/night halt duration? How many layovers can one expect each month?

Mainly 24 hours as we tend to do daily flights to all our destinations. I think all 787 flights are layovers. Those that are not are mainly used for training.

7. How many same day return flights can one expect on the B787 each month?

Very few

8. Are there frequent roster/schedule changes?

Some. I don't think the 787 suffers from much roster changes.

9. Flight schedules when released are for what duration typically? (eg a month or more/less?)

8 days before the end of the month, you get your roster for the whole of the next month.

10. Is it easy getting annual leave?

Depends on fleet and seniority.

11. Do wives actually need your permission each time they want to travel outside the country?

No, they don't even need an exit permit. They can come and go as they please. Staff travel is amazing and your wife will love it.

12. Are company provided apartments/villas of a good standard and well located?

Hit and miss.

13. Is it better to look for accommodation at the pearl/west bay area?

Best to arrive, stay in company accommodation for a year and suss the city out, then apply to take the money and move if you wish. There is a waiting list for those wanting to move out, so could take a while.

14. Is there much for wives to do in Qatar, barring going to malls?

It's all up to the wives. Some love it, some hate it, some tolerant it. It's all about her meeting new people and making friends. My motto is you have so many new friends here in a Doha you have not yet met. My wife has more friends here than she does in the UK. She loves it here, knows more people than me and does not want to move back to the UK. There are lots of bars and nice restaurants in Doha. The most important thing is many new friends. Which country are you coming from.

15. My confirmation letter states the B787 fleet has been assigned to me. Is it possible that QR will change this once I get there to say a A320 or B777?

It says on the contract, they can re assign you any fleet they like if needed. It's simple, either you want to fly a certain aircraft type or you want to fly for Qatar ? I very much doubt they will give you Airbus or 777

16. Can wives frequently travel with you on your layover flights?

Yes, if there is room on the flight, staff travel allows it.

If anyone on the 787 can fill in the above blanks, please feel free.

I have been here 7 years. Very happy with the company. I tolerate Doha.

Don't worry about anything

I have sent you a PM

Good luck with joining

Regards BP
