G'day,

I wish to contact any Aussies in EY re:

Quality of life in AUH for an expat family on EY money?

Accommodation. Where are the best areas to either rent or buy?
Best expat schools for primary/secondary years?
General impressions of the company now and in the future (I know, crystal ball stuff…)!
Rosters/lifestyle i.e. B777 Vs Airbus?

And generally any other useful information that a potential “expat” needs to know to help in his decision making.

And yes, I have read a lot of the EY/EK threads.

Actually, EY is getting worse and worse if you're a DEC or still average as a F/O.

As a captain, your pay has been cut last salary revision.

For all fellow cockpit crews LHS and RHS, hardly any leave in summer, flying between 90 to 110 hours july and august. 7 days on ( back in the morning leaving same night ) 2 OFF days then the same. Of course to lovely destinations such as KRT, LHE, COK , TRV , DEL, ISB, KHI , PEW , etc....

Whatever your nationality can be , it's hard... hard... hard.....

You can hardly have 4 off days in a row to go back and SYD are always full with no crew seat available.....
Starting BNE in september 4 times a week via SIN, so that would be a nice commuting flight for douwnunder guys, but still, all crew will request these flights as they are the only rewarding ones moneywise and sleepwise....

Don't expect any help from crewing, they go first in their minds, neither from your management, european or Oz.
Ey is managed my a huge mid-class subcontinent bunch of incompetent accountants, HR, white collars with brand new tie and new shiny case , whom lifeaim is to make your life more and more difficult.

Money is even not anymore an issue. Salary has always been 25% less than aviation standards, but at least life was quite easy and time to command quite low. Now, salary is even worse, and living conditions have fallen into the deepest s++thole ever.

No more freetime, crewcontrol taking your phoneline as a jukebox , useless management busy with our airport carpark free cards or with the new Audi roadshow...... as we stall engines or loose hydraulic systems on a regular basis, safety aboard is totally inconsistant, training is postponned UFN, low experienced F/O are brought in as nobody with a decent widebody experience from a civilized country wants to join anymore.
You have to be on a constant watch, but with no sleep in your bags for the last 6 days.
Something will happen soon, better not to be on board.

Talking about Roadshow, your OZmate JH did 2 roadshows for the pilots, and only 7 of them showed up, and even these guys had their tiny questions unanswered. Nobody cares anymore of what B+++++++t can be said . We all know that it's a lie only to keep any pilot where he is.

Crew controllers have to crew 7/8 flights a day, that couldn't be crewed before by accepting dirty deals, leaving more flights open later in the month, cancelling simulators, ground courses etc.....

Crew planing is a joke, not only due to the people up there, but to the shortage and the poor financial interest of coming in the sand pit.

No right except the one of keeping your mouth shut as injustice is obvious, safety is involved every day and the local "authorities" managed by our employers......

Hope it gave a good insight, but of course it's a partial one, you will find happy people around here. The guys coming from third world countries national airlines , paid peanuts before, and now upgraded to roasted nuts salary.... Most of them will be happy. They save in their donkey currency , don't live, and will tell you EY is heaven.
No racism, no offense, just a cruel fact.
Maybe they are right, but most of the european, northamericans, and guys from downunder won't agree on this one.

I cant say totally ignore most of this thread, but be circumspect about some of the info posted and by whom it is posted.

Speak to your Aussie mates, get as much info as you can and then make up your own, unbiased mind.

alghazal......sorry but thats your personal tainted view....if it really is that bad why do you stay?

Many of us came from first world, large carriers and were not paid peanuts so please speak for yourself and dont use such sweeping statements.

It would probably be in your best interests if you went back to your first world airline with your first class salary, .....do us all a favour!:mad:

The only thing I dont understand is that there are so many jobs around worldwide, particually for Airbus drivers, why dont more people leave? Sure one or two do, but from which airline dont pilots leave?
The salary seems ok to me, and I am not from a third world country, I would be happier with a stronger dollar, but what to do.

Right !!

3000USD more would do it to cover for the weakness of the currency....

and overtime

and pension fund

and stable roster

and respect

and a better medical

and proper leave management

and proper flight request system

and flight safety

and real non punitive cullture

and proper maintenance

and utitlity bills paid

and decent hotels on layover

and improved training

and so much

So the question remains, why stay mate?

Wht not spend your time applying for other jobs instead? I just dont get it, we are lucky there are options for us right now.

Will try to answer your questions without being put in front of the firing squad.
Quality of Life for family - good but leaves a thumping big hole in your back pocket. Unless your kids are couch potatoes who stay home watching dvds and play station all day, a club membership$$$ is a good idea.
Accommodation - if you go out on your own for accommodation, you will be paying out of your own pocket. Company accommodation is an apartment which will have you in town or close to it, or a villa in the middle of bloody nowhere - miles from anything that your kids are likely to want to do - unless quadbiking is their thing. Their is the rent to buy scheme, but have not looked at it seriously as don't plan to be here long enough to make it work.
Schooling - The British School best for Brit education, but unless you have a Brit passport, forget it! A new school just opening in competition to BSAK no Brit passport required. Other two top schools are American Community and Al Raha School, school allowance does not come close too.
Company Now and Future - I keep on asking my crystal ball the same question, but it clouds over. If you have the patience of a saint, it may come right, but at present I doubt it. I often ponder how I could have been so stupid as to believe the fairy tale that was painted at the interview. And I know, if you don't like it leave! With critical years in schooling at the present, moving now would disadvantage my kids. I was the fool, not them!
Rosters/Lifestyle - rostering practises here leave a lot to be desired and the fact that GCAA allow this to continue is of concern. Annual leave is impossible to get so don't be surprised if you work for 12 months straight without a break with your family.
The perfect job doesn't exist, but I am sure there are better than this out there.

This last post is quite the best I've read there. I'm far too angry to be able to write something like this :)

Anyway, for those who want us to leave instead of complaining

1 They need us there. No expat No Airline so behave accordingly when you deal with expats and if you don't know how to, hire the right people who know.

2 Why leave without trying to improve what can be. We are not all giving up.

As many of us, we used to fly for flag carriers or charters , but in even in charter airlines, disorganization, lack of proficiency, amateurism , fear management and lies were never brought to such an art !!

The 3 , alomost 4 years of operation are not even an excuse . Hire the correct people at the right job, pay them accordingly and they will do the job, not the puppets we do have now, who hold hardly any kind of experience except their failures and/or mistakes in EY.....

Third world airline it is, third world airline it will stay

Now, why not leave ?, well giving up and cowardise are not the solution. Face the situation and do our best to make it improve.

Criticism is well known for its vertues in wertern world , and not for an offense nor an insult, as it is there. Nobody can tell the truth without being fired, how good is it ??

We all came here with hopes, which are vanishing at various rythm, according to personal grounds, situations etc...

EY remains the most expensive low cost carrier of the Middle East. We are not carrying any flag, except the one of our shame.

This being said, it is and stays a very good place to get a command and to leave soon without training bond, as soon as you get the requirements and get the chance to have an interview in an airline with decent wages.

Abu Dhabi remains a nice place to live, except in July and August but do you want to live in Manchester in winter ? No way !! It's relatively safe, getting a bit more expensive than it used to be but still within our range.
Accomodation used to be huge problem , it's now a bit easier, and it would be much easier if they put the right people at the right job again. Talk to all the guys dealing with a certain lady in Accomodation dept........

As you said, there is no perfect place, but at least when you work your a## off, you get something back in your wallet. Mine remains empty, desperately empty after 105 hours a month.......

Indeed, why do you stay? Surely now with your experience other airlines would be beating at your door…

Looking at the base rates of pay, per flying hour & meal allowance allowances etc, I must admit I find it hard to believe that you have nothing left at the end of the month. Quote “Mine remains empty, desperately empty after 105 hours a month.......”

I appreciate some people have ex-wives to fund, but is AUH that expensive a place to live in? Do you personally have to “top” up so much extra to live there decently? EY pay rates, although not the highest, are certainly not the lowest I’ve seen advertised!
