Being Jewish in Dubai

G'Day Ladies and Gents,
Any chance getting a flying job in Dubai, say for EK, if you are Jewish?
Are there any Jewish crewmembers flying for them now?
Thank you.
Mary

hmmm. jewish and female? wanting to fly for EK.... best of luck to ya! (i honestly mean that)

Sireh 10th Jul 2007 23:12

Hi Mary,
Apply for the job normally; you do not have to advertise your religion or volunteer any info about your religious affliations. Should your family name sound very Jewish, then it is possible some miscreants will pick on it but I don't see a major problem. However do not advertise your sympathies with the Zionist regime, you may bring upon yourself more than you can chew.

Having said that, if you are not fanatical about your practices like strictly observing your Sabbath and refusing to fly then there is no obstacle for you to fit in as a crew member. Good Luck...Shalom & Wassalam.

Thanks for the funny replies. I'm not sure yet what I'll do. Never been to Dubai but it strikes me more as a place intereted in money than politics and religion. I might send my papers to them anyway and see what comes out of it.

Mary.

Jewish and DXB

Hola Mary /
xxx
Being Jewish should not be a problem in DXB, and all the answers and recommendations by our friends here are correct. Of all the Middle East area, the DXB Emirate is business oriented, and should be OK for you.
xxx
But if you fly to/from some countries around there, be careful. As an example, in Saudi Arabia. I have worked a long time for an ACMI with SV, and was based in JED, and I even knew 2 captains who were Jewish, and worked for SV... but they listed theirselves as "Christian" on their documents.
xxx
Funny is, once shopping for gold jewellery in JED in the gold souk there, the shop keeper showed me little Christian crosses and crucifixes for sale, that he kept hidden behind his desk. Smiling, I asked him if he had "Stars of David" as well for sale, he smiled at me, but did not answer. And the diamonds he was selling were probably coming from the Antwerp Jewish diamond market.
xxx
Another time, we needed maintenance on our 747, fully painted in SV colours and names, and for whatever reason, the company contracted BEDEK Aviation in TLV to do the job, so we flew out of JED, with a flight plan to Larnaca, Cyprus, and from there we flew to TLV. Same thing on the way back. Must have been a curiosity for "aircraft spotters" to see a Saudia 747 parked on Tel Aviv airport...
xxx
Like everyone says here, do not say anything. If your name is Yiddish, just tell them your ancestry is Germanic if they ask you. If you visit Israel, be careful not to get your passport stamped by the Israelis, ask them to stamp your entry/exit on a page that is stapled to a page of your passport.
xxx
Shalom

Happy contrails

Before befriending Hazrail you might want to check her/his posting history with the search facility.

The same person as Hazrail also has something of a history on this forum using the names 'tiramisu too' and 'mascarpone'.

If you've been to Israel and still have an Israeli Immigration Stamp in your passport, get a new passport before you visit the UAE. Otherwise you should be fine.

Dear Mary

Shalom and Salam Alikoum

I Don't see any problem in that at all. I'm a Muslim and from Oman and worked with some Jewish back in Oman and now here in UAE. few of my work Mates mentioned on their work paper they are Jewish there was no problem at all.

Welcome to Arabiya... well at least to the UAE or specially Oman where they don't give monkeys even if you are an Alien.

Cheers..

Going to have some Beer now with a Jewish Bloke..

WiraMelayu 11th Jul 2007 20:38

Beer? Ya Allah, HARAM dude! There may be a fatwa coming....:=

Constable Clipcock 11th Jul 2007 21:02

Depends on where you are WRT what "sounds Jewish" in the way of family names. I'm a Sephardi and in the US I get tuned more grief about how my name "doesn't sound Jewish at all" than anywhere!

Three tours in Iraq weren't a problem, BTW.

MASsenger 12th Jul 2007 03:23

Mary P, either you are one very brave gal or plain stupid. Why would anyone with your baggage walk into a furnace. I`m telling you, it`s no cherry tree lane. How long do you think you can conceal your Jewish identity. In no time your personal details will leak out no matter what you do to keep it cool. Gal then, all hell breaks loose! You instantly become a sitting duck for the locals to pick and play with. Here`s a verse from the Holy book of the land.

“And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess…” (Q. 4:24 )

Gives any sicko the right to hold you captive and do as they please. Don`t for one moment think you are not going to run into any of these idiots, there`s hordes hanging around waiting for some just like you. After you’ve been raped and dumped in the desert, don’t expect any legal redress from the rule of law. Not only you are an expat, you are Jewish. You`re the devil they want to stone!

This may come as a shock. The daily newspaper often carry stories of domestic helps from a poor country jumping to death from the balcony. Suicide is often the reason quoted. You believe this????

nitro rig driver 12th Jul 2007 07:12

Guys and girls

Dubia and the UAE have no problems with any religion as long as you respect THEIR rules and behave within them.
But they do have a problem with the state of Israel as they do not
recognise it as a country hence if you have a entry stamp from there you
WILL not be alowed entry into the UAE wherever you are from or beleive in.

As far as maids jumping from windows-that because their employers
treat them disgustingly and sometimes thats the only way out:mad:
and nothing to with being jewish

Give it a go Mary-if you don't you will never know and will always wunder what if
