aussies in the sandpit

g'day guys,i'm an EK wannabe still gainfully employed in OZ,just want to ask you guys if you'd do it all over again knowing what you know now? With the extreme opinions aired on these forums,i'm very concerned about wether or not my career goals are leading me down the right path.

Given that the pay here will not allow you to accumulate enough money to retire early, ask yourself this question.

How am i going to get home when i've had enough?????

If you can answer that to your satisfaction, then by all means give it a go.

Would i do it again if i had a good flying job in OZ?

Sh*t no!!!!!

Hmmmm......

Funny, I find that I have saved money, have very few ridiculous expenses like insurance, have free medical, subsidised housing and don't have to give one red cent to the government out of my salary......(yes I know the taxes are creeping in slowly...but 49 cents in the dollar in OZ is not for this little black duck!!)

Oz, great place to grow up and to visit, live there again..... no thanks.

This forum is always going to be a billboard for the negative to express their opinions, but, that doesn't mean the place is as bad as it is portrayed.

I look at what Dixon is doing in Oz, VB's slow down and the ridiculous cost of living there and am pleased that I made the move.

Each to their own though

I never said you wouldn't be better of financially. You probably will.

Better lifestyle. Don't think so.

The problem is, like anywhere, how do you save enough for retirement.

If you come here in your 30's, by the time you are 60 your kids will probably be off your hands, your provident fund will be reasonable (500k us) and you wont have many major expenses in your future.

The problem is, not many people want to stay until they are 60.

Comes back to my previous question. How are you going to escape?

Cheers guys,I guess it's a personal decision, and at the moment i'm caught on the wrong side of the Virgin 'slowdown',a LONG WAY on the wrong side of it actually! So although i'm very happy with life in OZ,I dont want to let myself stagnate, and it seems awfully tempting to make a few lifestyle sacrifices to go to an expanding combany, albeit with obvious problems, where it will be possible to move to the LHS of a 777 years before i'll be anywhere near a 73 command here.

The alternative is to go buy a Subway store!

Moe.:ok:

Understand the problems that can be caused if you've got a young family to feed and educate, but, then we have all had to sacrifice the extra things in life when we decided to have kids, Dubai is no different but does give children a better understanding of the world, cultures and broadens their opportunities. I do as in the previous post agree that there is nowhere else in the world safer and better than Oz to grow up in.... but it's not the only option.

Flamer, being back there recently and having a beer with some of my old collegues, thank God I got the chance to come here and have a carreer that is going forward..... but each to their own.

Hope to see you soon

Why dont you wait a while to see what pans out with the scene in oz.With the amount of guys leaving you will always find a job here or in EY etc.Perhaps with the changes ahead in Jet* and your own companies international moves their will be some movement ahead. If you are single you might consider the move, otherwise stick to the subway idea or if you are young enough go and study something else and open up other business opportunities on the side.

Yep,single and under 30 with no ties, thats why I think that now is the time to make a move if i'm EVER going to.

Still, the whole thing is bloody confusing! Guess I just have to make a decision and stick to it.

....unfortunately inspirational folk like Rat do exist in the ranks, but obviously he has trouble seeing the context about what was said about the lucky country and the downside of being bl**dee expensive to live and get ahead.

Even if you do it for a while you will gain wider experience here that will only do you good for the future.

Don't leave it too late though, things are moving very quickly at the mo.

Besides that.....5500 single flighties, (I guess that falls back to 4000 when you take the good boys from the eastern med away) sure.... you'll hate every minute of it!!!! Not.

You are nuts and will regret it.
Wait till you see how youll get treated as an F/O in Ek.
Im off to Jet star as an f/o screw the command in EK .
Lifestyle is way more important , the sad thing is you will not realise that till you leave yourself.

Dont do it....................

Re: aussies in the sandpit

And then......MATE....sorry to burst your miserable little bubble, but I came back from Europe already typed on 737's,so as much as it eases your pain to blame all 600 Virgin pilots for your ****house life,I didnt BUY a job from anyone....MATE.

So now because I dare to consider my career opportunities, and consult a public forum for advice from those who have been there and done it,all of a sudden i'm to blame for for the decline of the industry here?? I came,I saw,I didn't really like it,so i'm voting the only way I can...with my feet.

Why the chip on the shoulder buddy? Wont Virgin give you a go? I tell you one thing, despite the company's woes, when it comes to recruitment, they have an EXCELLENT arsehole filter, and the the blokes are all a real pleasure, hence why the likes of you will never get back.

 LOSER

Well at least you can rent a nice house in Australia for about 200 a week or 300 if you want a large house.

Medical is already free in Australia.

booze is cheaper in Aus and you dont need a licence to buy it.

Car in surance in Australia is way cheaper than uae so the cost of running a car in both places is about the same.

Tax free money an f/o in EK gets about 60k AUD a year in VB i think its about 80k take home close to the same.

If you have kids the 10 % you have to pay is still about double what the fees r in Australia.

Australia is way cheaper than the UK for everything., the thread is about Australia i thought.

In some areas you can buy a house for less than 100k .

Give me your job ill swap anyday................................

AFAP..... still a member here, not their fault that things are getting tough in Oz, obviously those who whinge about it have never contributed towards making things happen through them, and DXB vs Oz... make your decision with one eye still looking over the fence for a comparison and you will see that the benifits of the Ex pat life are good.

Wanna get some new carreer experience? Go OS.

Wanna whinge, join the already bitter minority on this forum.

Just take the job flame,

Yo 146, better than the jumbolino hey!
