What I think about QR

It is so true, this is the place to be and Qatar Airways is the company to work for. Led by an excellent management who the enlightened Mr. Akbar is making it more successful than any other airline. Qatar AIrways is liked by many air travellers. Those who either passanger or fly for QR are very lucky.

MD11Flyer 22nd May 2004 18:07

Do you work for Qatar and live in Doha? Its easy to assume because an airline is successful that it is an ideal place to work in. Just because the passengers are happy doesn't mean the crew is.

homesick rae 22nd May 2004 18:14

Superman, glad you are enjoying yourself, but I'm sure AAB has some Kryptonite tucked away for use at a later date! It is often loyal servants like you that suffer in the long run...good luck!

MD11: fair comment!

Akbar making it one of the most succesful airlines?????

Sorry Superman you are dillusional.

Success is not measured by size and future orders. The airline is unprofitable. It is so far from making a profit. It is merely generating revenue by offering cheaper fares than the other European carriers. It is not sustainable.
Qatar is an artificial economy.
No other airline in the world could be doing what Qatar is.

I think QR lost in the vicinity of US$270 million last year. And that does not include any lease payments or down payments. Because they dont have to wory about that. Where everyone else does.

MD11Flyer 23rd May 2004 13:36

Success is not acheived by one man/woman, especially in the airline. It is by the hundreds and thousands of employees under the "great" leadership of a man or woman that will make a company successful. I can plan great routes and order 1000 aircrafts, but if my employees are unhappy, they will do a half  job and my company will go tits up in no time

Deske 23rd May 2004 14:09

Does anyone know, that how long was Emirates unprofitable from 1985?

My airline (government owned flag-carrier) made about 100 million USD losses last year and still alive and expandig.

MD11Flyer 23rd May 2004 16:48

Well theres only so long you can go before you dig yourself a hole too big to climb out of. And then its worse because instead of slowly downsizing to handle what you can you will be making a sudden change which you may not be ready for and it all goes downhill from there.

boiler 24th May 2004 03:57

As far as I know, QR does not even pay for fuel in DOH. Imagine the losses if this was included esp. with the higher fuel prices (in addition to the other non-payments which Trueman mentioned).

Hajj Man 25th May 2004 03:31

boilermaker,

not sure the fuel coment sounds true, if this was the case then all flights out of Doha should be tankering fuel everywhere they go to "SAVE COST" for the airline if that was the case ( not paying for fuel in Doha)

I could be wrong, but it does not seem to be true this thought?

Hajj Man:ok:

BigGeordie 25th May 2004 12:52

Deske,

Emirates has only made a loss in one year since it started. I think it might have been 1986. Must be doing something right.....

MD11Flyer 25th May 2004 14:49

We here in Toronto have a new airline AeroFalcon trying to serve the western asian community with unrealistic startup fleet. Anyways, Should Emirates decide to fly the Toronto route they would dominate that part of the world in Canadian Aviation. Every asian/middle eastern person I talk to and tell then Emirates may fly to Toronto, their eyes just light up.... so definetly Emirates is doing something right cause their name is like Gold!

waitec 25th May 2004 17:17

BigGeordie,

That's what EK claim to be the case. Were any financial accounts published for one to believe what is claimed? Personally I find it very hard to believe that EK were only unprofitable during its first year of operation. They started publishing their accounts after years in operation and due to increasing pressure from the aircraft manufacturers and leasing companies.

MD11 Flyer

I fully agree that when one mentions EK it sounds like one is making reference to Gold. In my opinion this is all due to a very good Marketing and PR department. I have travelled a few times with EK and I have to say that their inflight service and customer care, although of a good standard, is on the way down and inconsistant. This is the reason why 'Skytrax' never classified the Emirates service as 5 star.

Qatar Airways, mostly thanks to their hard working cabin crew, manged to gain the 5 star status in a few years. In my opinion, Qatar Airways is the biggest threat to Emirates in the region and not Gulf Air and Eithad. The 'war' shall start when the new Doha international airport will open

moremilk 25th May 2004 17:57

aint got a clue.

Waitec unless you have played for both teams and seen first hand how they are run and how the flight crew feel,u shouldn't compare QR to EK,they are at opposite ends of the scale,no comparison,EK is in a different league to QR,especially how management "generally" treat its staff,Emirates is miles ahead in every department,EK aint 100% perfect but I know where i prefer being and speaking recently to some very senior QR CSD's nothing has changed very much in QR,HUGE staff turnover and still the bullying tacticts on the weak crew by AAB which is why most of their flights go minimum crew, just enough to man the doors, says a lot dosn't it????Well I'm off to the pool with the girls, thats something u can't do very much in Doha,Bye bye.

waitec 25th May 2004 18:59

MoreMilk,

I re read my post to see if by any chance I compared EK's mangement styles to those of QR as you claim I did but failed to see any comparison whatsoever. Have you read my post well or have you written what we all know so that at the end you can tell us that you're going to the pool with the girls, implying the liberty you have in Dubai?

I gave my opinions on EK's profitability in the past, their published accounts and on their service. You chose, like many before you, to compare EK's management with that of QR and tell us once again how well things are run in EK. Well good luck to you and fellow employees but I am very sorry to say that it has nothing to do with what I wrote.

I hope that you enjoyed swimming in the pool with the girls.

moremilk 26th May 2004 20:37

sorry

Apologies Waitec,i read your post incorrectly, too much chlorine in my eyes, bye bye.

apaddyinuk 1st Jun 2004 22:34

Superman....
I really hope there is a severe hint of sarcasm in that post!
I spent a year and a half flying as crew for that Bunny Boiler and I assure you...YES HE IS A COMPLETE LUNATIC!!!!

How many "CAPTAINS OF INDUSTRY" would stoop to the level of screaming at an off duty, out of uniform cabin crew member who came into the office with a sick note for a broken toe and belittled her for wearing open-toe sandals as being disrespectful??????? Cmon....thats just a tad OTT...And im not that person but she is one of my best mates and it made it around the airline in minutes!!!

Way to Go you lunatic in the Towers!!! :suspect:

Captain Mercurius 9th Jun 2004 10:06

Gentleman,

They say that this is a Forum for Professional Pilots to exchange information, than, let us do it.

I just hope that this information can be used by potentially “suicidal” people, willing to work for this airline.

It cannot be denied the fact that this company has a bunch of very nice blokes, who suffer everyday of their lives seen that individual practicing all sort of lunacies, and crimes against employees.

Abusing the power and authority, given to him.

Few years a go, he added some “highly mean expertise” to his small number of “partners in administration”.yuk: :yuk:

Someone with a long career in “applying a lot of pressure” and doing mean things, in a very reputed Singaporean Airline, the results are available in several newspapers.

Not enough the said person, brought “some reinforcements” from the same Airline, the nick name of the individual in that airline office it was “deadly” ,one can wonder why.::E

Pilots willing to work for this airline should research and question in why on the last two years this company it is insistently recruiting people, for ALL departments.

Based on the number of advertisements placed, I think that they are simply the BEST customer of Flight International.

Therefore, here is some food for thought for people willing to work for this airline.

Take also inconsideration that as Professional Pilot, your career it is important, but the most important it is your security and family’s security, and a long-term job.

It is important to work for someone serious with the correct vision and sound moral values, not to waist your lives in a place who eventually will give you few months of salary, but with big chances one day going to work and to meet the ”most brilliant” airline administrator in the planet.

The person who will show how is to “properly” manage an airline, and having to leave the country within 24hours.

There is no rocket science and everybody in the airline industry now that any administrator with a normal budget, not even to mention restricted budget, will have serious difficulties to manage an airline nowadays.

The competition is enormous!

Qr it has been successful not because management example or correct input, it is because is blessed with a good number of people willing to work, and used their previous expertise in the company’s benefit.

But one day everybody gets tired going to work and having fear…

Fear of been bad mouthed by one of the several “eyes” AAB placed in the company.

Several cadet pilots are seeing in the office regularly “giving feedback” to management.

Cabin crew as well.

I hope that this will give some light for people willing to work for them.

Safe flying to all

Mercurius

or with the boys...lolol

more milk may have gone swimming with the boys rather than with girls...lolol

Qatari515 13th Jun 2004 20:27

Mercurius,

with all do respect, QR is not as bad as you think it is!

True, managment style needs a lot of improvment but....

This is a fast growing company and it is bsed in a rather slow part ofour globe hence the troubles....

But I have been flying here now the last 36 months or so and never never safety has been endangered on my flights! I have done screenings and standards are pretty high!

Stick to the truth my friend and nothing but the truth, that will help us all!

homesick rae 13th Jun 2004 23:24

515:

Mercurius has hit a few nails on the head with his post.

36 months? 72 months for me and witnessed the changeover from Hamad to AAB.

AAB is a shrewd businessman some may say, but he is a tyrant and a complete and utter D......D to be truthful. I am not interested in your nationaility...some people say he favours certain ones.

To be honest, no one in QR can honestly say that their job is safe!!!

You, as I did, and others do, perform their duties to a high standard, but, as long as he lets idle gossip and his own personal moodswings sway his judgement you people are always at risk!

Be wary and be good.

AAB or the Snake will bite you eventually!!!

(Please do not think I am being personal here ok.)

Cheers
