well yes and no
it was not the reason they had been to good - the particular company wanted to much in way to short time, which caused severe financial troubles - employees took a lot when the financial truth came up and still where loyal.
i can tell you from the experience that even in hard times with pay cuts and lay-offs every single employee was loyal Till the end but the business eager to make money was beyond the capacity and business model - it was definitiv not how employees where treated - fair roasters - fair pay and respect on both sides
and yes EK do what they do - does it make financial sense - maybe - must it be that way - no
the decisions is primarily based on respect to employees. EK has a financial strength and they easily could have done different, it’s all about how much they care and think twice of how they treat employees.
i hope you still have your job (and I really do, because I do t want anybody to go through, what a lot of people are going through right now) and it sounds like - and not everybody is in that lucky situation and not everybody has maybe an alternative to his profession. Here have been lives completely destroyed and some of these live won’t be back to aviation at all - these individuals face a long unemployment, if not forever. Wise speaks about “don’t see you as a victim, and take ownership of your live” is easy said. I know some people who have nothing to head forward to, tremendous financial problems now, no home, some not even a country to go to, because they trusted them. Mistake or not, here have been lives completely destroyed and the fear of getting into absolutely nothing is very, very big.

Lesson to the new generation who will pretend to have done their homework. EK does not care for you or your family . AAR has more than once said expats here to work not have fun . Read in to it what you want . EK has destroyed countless lives and families for ever . I would say shame on them but they just don't care , greedy bastards ! Especially STC and AAR !

Latest rumor says that STC and/or AAR wanted to fire all flight crew and bring em back on a new contract right a way - but somehow they got stopped.
after the recent weeks it is very clear where this company is heading to and also that this gig is over - hello tomorrow- hello LLC
it’s clear that EK wants to get rid of all pilots(expats) as soon there is a slight chance to single men or un-men airplanes as there is no legislation which would protect employees nor costumers as not one of these people up there will ever take responsibilities over their doing or the companies doing - as a future customer I will be very careful which company I choose for my family in future as it is clear UAE cares about NOBODY

1. They didn't get "somehow stopped", they realized that firing all is technically unfeasible. But make no mistake, all tech crew will be on a new contract shortly. Just semantics here.
2. All airlines will eventually get rid of as many pilots as they can when one-man or no-man cockpits become certified. It's not for tomorrow, but to single out EK on this is naive.
3. There is no management anywhere on earth that would take any responsibility for employees in the absence of a law or a union forcing them. Joining an airline in a country where the govt is lawmaker and owner of the airline and where both prohibit unions, makes any complaint in layoffs futile.

It's a tough world out there.

Have the EK management and support staff been culled in proportion to the relative numbers of pilots and cabin crew dismissed? Not forgetting engineers of course.

And has the employee reduction programme finished for the moment? (I guess not many can answer that right now, but rumours will be circulating)

My sympathy to all who have lost their jobs, and possibly their careers. I have family out in Dubai, and know just what an unforgiving place it can be for non-Emiratis.

It is indeed a tough world out there.

Well largely 50 percent reduction of the A380 fleet but we still have 100 percent of the cocky Airbus chief pilots (All 5 of them). Go figure 🤦‍♂️

yes and no. Cabin crew and pilots in the thousands as we are seeing. Office staff essentially in the "30%" range as long as it is not locals per department. Ongoing and evaluating to see if things "pick up". But definitely more on the way. Some more than the 30% culling, example being in commercial, revenue optimisation and finance departments. but brace for impact....

Unfortunately the 4 months unpaid leave (pseudo furlough) is just to hedge their bets whilst they see what happens to the future loads. If no sign of picking up I’m sure more will be added to the squeezed lemon pile. I think the lack of load and direction is probably a bit of a shock to them....poor loves!

I guess there isn’t any short haul to at least boost the revenue stream. At least in Europe there has been a strong recovery of the short haul market. Longhaul I guess will remain suppressed for a while at the strongest markets in Asia and the us are making a bit of a hash of it. USA is nuts with the buffoons running the show, and in Asia they’re intent on turbo lockdowns for a handful of cases.

Lots of aircraft flying around empty is not a recovery of the market unfortunately.

BAs European load factors have been healthy. Some flights overbooked to non quarantine destinations in Italy and Greece. Spanish destinations were in the 90s[%] until the recent U.K.gov Imposed quarantine, and flight to Spain now about 60%

Loads have been in the 70% range for some routes in the US too - doesn't mean the yields are worth a crap, though.

I agree with 3 greens, having taken a few flights in the last 6 weeks, to FRA, AMS and GVA the loads are healthy...

Lies,damned lies and Coronavirus statistics!!
Say BA had 5 Athens a day with 85% load factor last year.
Post Covid 2 a day with 100% load factor.
Scenario one has about 750 paying pax.
Scenario two has about 350 paying pax.
Its gonna take a big calculator and a very sophisticated pricing algorithm to make money even at 100% load factor.
Too expensive and no one flies. Too cheap and you may as well not fly and just flush money down the toilet for fun🤑

nowhere did anyone say it was “ops normal”. Just that there’s obviously some demand for travel and that a it’s clear people aren’t scared or worried too much about getting on planes. When countries “open up”, it seems people will fly.

No, it says SOME % of the population are not scared or worried. That % is giving a satisfactory load on a specific number of aircraft serving that route. As the % fear factor decreases (Naturally with time or a vaccine) the number of aircraft serving that route can increase to mainain a satisfactory load factor. When all the fleet is back flying with satisfactory load factors we are back to square one and the fleet will need to be increased and recruitment restarts. One 777 on LHR with 99% loadfactor where it used to be 6xA380 isn’t a good sign . Statistics can prove anything.

Currently 2 x 777 and 1 x 380 daily to LHR... Agreed, not the same as 6 x 380 but definitely not one Triple!
