Long-Haul Slump

Emirates, the world’s largest long-haul airline, has been hard hit by the unprecedented slump in travel caused by the coronavirus. It’s already had to rethink plans for the double-decker A380, a mainstay of its fleet, after a dearth of demand elsewhere led Airbus SE to decline to upgrade the jet and then to terminate the program early.

The Gulf carrier, also the biggest customer for the Airbus super-jumbo, plans to take the delivery of three A380s during the fiscal year ending in March, Al Redha said. While the delivery schedule for the last five planes remains unchanged, “if the need comes to re-visit, obviously we will do that.”

The COO expects 60 per cent to 70 per cent of the current A380 fleet to be back in the air by December. Load factor now exceeds 55 per cent and demand for both economy and premium travelers has strengthened, he said. The airline plans to keep all 115 of the double-decker jets.

The Dubai-based carrier will roll out premium economy seats on its newest A380 aircraft slated to be delivered in November, Al Redha said. Some of the existing fleet will be retrofitted from economy to premium economy.

Two Brands

Emirates Group is also undergoing a strategy rethink as it looking for ways to streamline operations and increase efficiencies, Al Redha said. One of the possibilities that is being considered is combining the back office operations of Emirates with discounter Flydubai, while maintaining two separate companies and identities. Both carriers are owned by Dubai’s government.

“There is definitely a scope having to look at how we can reduce the expenses and become more efficient in certain areas, even if requires combining some back office activities,” Al Redha said. , adding that the re-examination is being done for all the companies within the group, including ground-handling and catering arm Dnata.

Emirates and Flydubai have deepened their ties since 2017, embracing route rationalization to minimize duplication.
None of this makes sense. They have just decimated the A380 crews. Who will fly them all by December?

Who will fly them? Well, no one of course.

If you think the airline's recovery plan hinges on the implementation of a grotesquely inefficient device you will have some surprises ahead.

Possibly fixed by new FTLs. If the A380 is now crewed exclusively by UAE nationals, EK can roster them how they like. It's not like the locals will leave to get a job elsewhere I suppose.

This is a whole new era for Dubai. The Sheikh will expect his people to start pulling their weight (and I'm mainly referring to those locals outside the airline business here).

You are correct, nothing makes sense here at the moment.

What was Tim Clarke saying the other week ‘Fire and rehire’ ...... new reduced T&C and people grateful to have a job. How I hope that bites the company in the ass!

I will say it again, I am not talking about real sickness. I am talking about people constantly saying they will press 2 every time they think of “punishing“ the company or don’t like their roster. Obviously the powers that be have cotton on to this and now many innocent people who have suffered real illness have to pay for it.

I hope this makes it more clear.
No not very clear at all. HR have been handing out warnings and cautions to pilots over sickness for years. This has nothing to do with the 2 pushers, but everything to do with weak ineffective flight ops management, and an empire building HR department. Even when a pilots Licence is suspended due to medical, and during that time he worked in the office etc, he is seen as being non productive, and given a caution. If he were an office dweller, having the same condition, and doing the same office job our grounded pilot was, he would be good to go. It's a totally biased and not thought out system. But when the computer says you get a caution you get a caution, with no human intervention. To think that someone just recovering from a heart condition or cancer will be called into the office on a day off to be “supported” by fleet i.e. given a caution letter is surreal.

Have some empathy. Families are hurting at the moment. Keep your guesswork to yourself. They are struggling to understand what and why this has happened to them. Your muddying the waters is not helping.

To the fragile new millennial, you are correct. The HR lady involved was one of you as well. This boomer thinks you are very perceptive.

Dropp you have been predicting this pandemic and demise of the 380 for over a decade now. Good on you for sticking with it.
We both know that EK had no choice other than that aeroplane. Even if they didn't like it. The whole reason EK exists is to feed tourists and businesses into Dubai. I am pretty sure it was you that told me that only 25% of the pax stay and 75% transit. Well that hasn't changed. EK fleet growth is still based on how many tourists the Government say they need to keep the economy running. The only way of achieving that was by operating more seats. The more seats that come into the hub means they need more seats out of the hub. It's that simple. Ticket sales dont fund Dubai, tourist and business dollars do. Just as they did the whole time you were here.

What Don said....
Im struggling to see how EK will crew the blunderbus in anything like the numbers required going forward, perhaps they have a well connected Habibi who knows more than most regarding the race for a way out of this pandemic?

14 6 you sound like a sub 18 month pup, perhaps from Latin South America or Africa..or similar, certainly not the first world based on your assumptions and comments.
You are certainly not a guest, you are a guest WORKER, slightly better paid than the taxi drivers, construction workers and Costa employees...better paid but not better thought of by the oxygen thieves in charge of you. In broad comparison, last century a certain fellow with a small amount of facial hair on his upper lip considered people not of his ideal race to be “Untermensch” in effect racially and socially inferior. This is the same view that many of the locals take towards you...your genetics along with your lack of breeding make you expendable. You would do well to remember this given many many have been before you and and have heard the tripe that individuals such as yourself post from time to time.
If you are still enamoured with how wonderful the place is...and this is all a big misunderstanding, perhaps a quick trip to a local Islamic bookstore to pick up a copy of Mein Kampf...but be quick, it’s super popular in the Arabic speaking world, and even more so in the UAE.

For the many of you struggling to find a pattern in the redundancy list, an anecdote may be of assistance.

Some years ago a colleague of yours needed a day-surgery. An unexpected result was that the stitching interfered with his actions on the overhead panel and the quadrant. His medical was suspended. During the suspension he worked on the ground in the training department and used the time to formalize an idea he had to streamline and personalize the upgrade simulator lessons. The methods he devised worked well and he was called in to the Bouncy to receive a Najm award.

ONE week after receiving the Najm, he was instructed to visit PP at the Bouncy. This time he was told in no uncertain terms that he was seen as a waste of salary, oxygen, and good food and in future the company's baleful eyes would be watching him closely for further transgressions.

I wonder where he fits on the list.

Singapore Airlines has a policy of reserving the A380 pilot positions for its citizens. Possibly EK will try the same thing but hopefully the fleet reduction won't be so great that they can get rid of all the expats. Retaining a small core of A380 crews to keep things ticking over, whilst firing the rest and then offering jobs back on reduced terms and conditions in six months time once things have settled down might appeal to management.

It’s time to give the old hands some credence who have been saying this s***t for years like Don, Monarch and Dropp..... you guys with the “I’m new here” avatars (all of who’s first posts were coincidentally on 9 or 10th of July 🤔 ) would be wise to give these old hands the reverence they f’ng deserve! You collectively have very very little credibility compared to them on this forum.

Again you have very very very little credibility.... you’ve been on these forums along with 2-3 of your compatriots for no more than 48 hours (given that information the automomatic suspicion for most of us naturally turns to the 3rd or 7th floor).Whether you agree with their opinions or not, Don, Monarch, Dropp, Fatbus and company have been here for YEARS... and they are highly respected in these circles! Much more so than you, the more insolent you are to these gentlemen the less respect you will find on here! You’re snide remark above is not a good start! Tread carefully.

Those of you posting just short or naming names, rubbing hands that someone you many not approve of had been made redundant also...Stop it!

Its like a pack of wolves fighting over scraps of food thrown down from on high....... just STOP IT !!!

We are not the problem here it is the company and they way they have handled this.

I can assure you, I have immense empathy with everyone who has been terminated as this has happened to me twice already. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear that real sick or people who have recovered from real illness are being treated like this.

However, this is not what I am talking about. I am perplexed by the fact that you keep steering the point I am making in another direction. Do you deny that people have been advocating the pressing of 2 without being sick? Over the years I have heard this “advice” many times and obviously the higher ups also. Do you really think they were just going to let it go? No, they became very sensitive to the health issue and I have seen various policies being implemented over time to discourage this practice. High flying hours, like we have been logging for the last decade brings with it real health issues. By pressing 2 without being really sick, people were adding unnecessary “data” to a data driven system. Do you really think this would not have any consequences? It is like the over prescription of antibiotics. If you take an antibiotic for a minor ailment, nothing immediately bad happens to you, but it has dire consequences for someone with a real bacterial infection somewhere down the line due to the unnecessary over usage of a good thing.

This is not muddying the waters. This is to tell healthy people to think twice before using #2 as a roster enhancement tool and allow people who are really sick the opportunity to use it as intended.

If you still do not understand, I apologise, but maybe someone else will.

BBC News - Coronavirus: Emirates set to cut 9,000 jobs, citing pandemic

I think the accountant got the numbers wrong in this interview. It's almost like this place is run by a bus conductor.
