Another pay cut at EK

Just announced, No step to keep with inflation. If you and add VAT, in last three years alone -11%.

To those of thinking of joining - the erosion of pay will continue as the boom times are over.

Think carefully.

Gee thanks, so much thanks for the recognition of the hard work, long hours put in!
Add in the lack of recognition for loyalty, experience, time in company (ie seniority!) of “preferences “ during the roster build does not fill me with much “joie de vivre” with EK.
So my take on EK at the moment:
Piss poor rosters, no step pay increase, inability to swap flights due to roster compression, diminishing morale, increasing apathy and what is worse of all management are doing nothing to address the issues, in fact they just compound them!

Probably because they don’t have to, enough sheep still lining up to join the slaughter.

As a complete outsider I muss say that I am somewhat baffled by the recurring complaints I read here about EK for many years now.

if things are as terrible as reported (and I don't really doubt it) how is it that they still manage to operate? Where they so much out of the market?

Because the seniority system of compensation at every world airline makes lateral movement increasingly difficult with age. As you get older, you hang on to the relatively higher pay that you currently have rather than starting over at "Year Zero" pay and benefits elsewhere. Unlike other white-collar professions, long experience does not offer a negotiating position for salary and benefits if making a move.

Therefore, many find it still best to stay, though the reality of that despite years of shafting make it a bitter pill to swallow - hence the venting on forums such as here.

Aero , that was never the case at EK and any thar thought otherwise were either naive or just plain stupid . 17 + years , you either live with it or move on. Age 65 or 35 no difference. A very small % are vocal on pprune and Dubai pilot BBQ talk has not changed since 2007. The infamous 92 hour change . Prior to that ask Airbus guys how things were and for that matter even the 777 had it good .

as someone said pprune is peace to come and cry . I add to that, a place to have a laugh .

I understood the no bonus ( despite certain parties getting a 500,000,000 AED bonus ) I could even understand the no pay increase, but the No Step just is a complete slap in the face. It is semi contractual, its was advertised as such to me. When I joined I was told every year as a reward for service you WILL get 3% step. It doesn’t just affect your present, it affects your whole future at the airline and beyond into pensions since it is compounded over the years.

The pay pot is pretty much a fixed amount ( aside from the pilot body size increasing due to the airline size increasing, so in effect it is in fixed proportion to the airline size) All the step does is shuffle the pay around, you go up a step, the guy below you moves up and the guy above likewise. Eventually you leave, and a new joiners takes your place at the bottom. Based on that I really don’t understand the no step, it is saving nothing and is just a slap in the face. Work harder and we won’t reward you.

Inflation plus the VAT implementation of 5% last year was met with 3% step, so we lost out. This year further inflation and not even 3% step to allow you to even keep pace. Will this aid retention? I leave that to your imagination. Will it aid recruitment? It will make little difference but do you really want an a long haul airline eventually totally crewed by 2000 hour first officers?

That is exactly what they want. 2,000 hour first officers are cheaper and tend to do what they are told. As far as our enlightened management are concerned an ATPL is an ATPL so why pay more?

Left EK a few months ago and did not regret it at all!
Even the numbers are smaller on my pay-cheque and I have to pay for my house, I love my new company and family life and lifestyle and must say, there is neither any lifestyle in Dubai (hahaha), nor is it worth the money or anything else.
Don't have to worry anymore, if Emirates keep their promises in the contract or brake them.
So glad, that we left after a few years, especially with the economic and political situation around this area in ME.
If something happens there in near future, then people are forced to leave, good luck to everybody selling their good quality villas and get out of the country without paying their outstanding depts.

All the best!

Depending on the source the cost of housing expenses dropped about 30% in 2018. Considering the VAT and inflation in consumer goods.... unless EK has reduced housing allowances everyone is making more money! Unless, of course, someone made a poor choice and purchased in Dubai! For those who are renting and still receiving their housing allowance they have done quite well for themselves.

Since the living out allowance has not been available for renting for several years, the only way anyone could have been ‘doing well for themselves’ would be if they had rented years ago under old terms and thus taken the hit with inflation and VAT, and also been able to convince their landlord to reduce their rent by your quoted 30%. The ones who purchased which is the only way to move out now not so well, and not to mention the vast majority who neither rent nor purchase.

Thus the numbers who did ‘well for themselves’ are vanishingly small.

How you can dress up a decrease in pay and terms as a good thing I don’t know, unless you live high up in the thin air of the bouncy castle that is, or your just a troll.

What about us poor folks (most of the airline in some regard) that is stuck in Company Accommodation? We didn’t get a pay raise and haven’t for years.

Great idea. Leave EK and join goat airlines. That is an excellent idea.
Pay going backwards, but still we have people working on days off, and accepting no productivity when swapping into overtime.
The holding back of the 3% increment and the changing of the productivity threshold has cost us a lot. It has cost the company as well. Highly experienced captains leaving, being replaced by low houred pilots from companies that were never even considered before. Fast forward 5yrs and the cost cutting will begin to bite.

We’ve had a few join us already. Some like it here. Some are not looking to leave.

After all, there must be a reason why they call it Guantanamo Airlines...

There was a pilot made series(I think YT, but not sure anymore) during my time with QR - must have been around 2007 or so about pilots in EK(black/white, made from clips of old movies). Any ideas about the name and how to find it again?

But even back then it was a clear warning for guys thinking to join EK. Or QR which is/WAS even worse. Or the other, unspeakable one that kills all threads because the airline is so fantastic and everyone just said so nice things about them.... Hell - it IS the ME. What do you expect?

Still, would love to see that old clips again - if someone could give me a link...
