Good afternoon eveyone from this time zone ,
firstly thank eveyone in advance for reading this post and replying with your valuable inputs .
scenario - 29 year old 737 Capt moving to ME on the 380’s.
ladies and gentlemen , I have about 3-4 months for my joining and I am clueless about how to go about reading and getting to know the aircraft before my training g starts . Vastly different culture , different training philosophy and change of fleet ,
So can you help me with your inputs so that I can learn the aircraft better and yes sail through my training .

Look out the window, and fly the aircraft like a Cessna 172.

Snoop Way to go

Since you ask ... try and get hold of the soft copies of the A380 FCOM and FCTM from any of your friends..

The documentation and information methods are different across A & B Fleets ... being comfortable with edocs will definitely be an advantage

An iPad will become part of your life..

Get used to jealous old farts .. me old fart too but not jealous .. enjoy your time with the Airbooos philosophieee

How does this post and your previous post help him? You aren't giving him any information at all, tell him why you found working in EK to be a nightmare. The man made a choice, advise him or don't say anything if you have nothing to contribute to his thread. Some of you old pilots are an absolute delight.

Leroy, don't worry, over the last 3 years almost everyone that left and wastes their time coming back on here has to mention that they left, a disclaimer almost. It makes them feel important

👍
If you can get a version of the FMGS PC trainer it would go a long was to make you comfortable...

There are differences between the 73FMS and Airbus FMGS ... some subtle some not so ...

Worth remembering that Airbus is at FMGS ver 2.x compared to the 73 FMS update 17 or so... the reason arises primarily because the Airbus FMGS is part of the flight control system vs. the 73 FMS which does not have as much authority over the flight envelope ( Max excluded)

Flyboy, there is a reason the miserable ones amongst us left, it was because EK made us that way.
I was warned before I joined, I was told in no uncertain terms what the reality of the place was, and yet like many I ignored it.
Do yourself a big fat favour, dispense with any idea that EK has the slightest bit of interest in you or your opinions, understand that Dubai is a shiney facade covering a sandy poorly run third world sh1thole and most importantly, appreciate that you have about a 95% chance of turning into the same miserable embittered ex EK employees...just like the rest of us.

Well, it does not really matter how long an aircraft is AFTER the closed cockpit door. Keep the limitations in mind, the cockpit itself flies like any other plane .

Worked in the ME a while ago as skipper on A300-600 coming from the CRJ series. Quiet a big difference in MTOW BUT, to be honest, I did not find it overly difficult. The smaller CRJ actually required much better handling skills due to a relative aggressive roll rate(for an airliner), the lack of slats(100/200) and therefor a "dive" style approach with last second correction to land on the main gear instead of the nose wheel instead, NO autothrottles etc..
On the other hand the A300 was a train - you knew what will happen 30 miles later and proper pre-planning was required as with any widebody. And that are already the differences.

Fly the NG by myself, in terms of "not slowing properly down" it actually behaves like a wide body aircraft(especially if you have as well experience on the even worse SFP version of the NG). In my eyes a NG skipper will have no problems on the A380. Should be even easier. IF the 380 flies as well AS SLOW as the A320 series which very often forces me to re-plan to a F40 landing going into high density airports then it should be even easier ;-) .

Relax, enjoy the (looong) ride. Fighting the boredom will be most likely the bigger challenge

@Monach Man

I understand the frustration of some EK guys(was QR myself a long while ago, I think no further explanation needed and as EK guy suddenly the world does not look THAT bad anymore, right?). But let's be honest. WHICH Airline, even back here in Europe which I consider still the best place to be in a cockpit after I tried Asia, Down Under, ME, Europe, REALLY cares about it's employees? I went to fly for "harp" air and we all know what they think about their pilots, I return them the favour. BUT - I am based at home. Reality is, airline business is not anymore the thing it was 20-30 years ago, it never will be.

If you want some fake glamour, shiny new jets, a moderate paycheck you go ME. If you are more down to reality you stick with good old Europe(as a European of course, replace that otherwise with your "home" continent).

Tomuchwork, wholeheartedly agree, fortunately I’ve vacated the airline world and have traded the 777 for a 7G bangseat equipped flying sports car as a Civvy contractor. A busy day is 2 x 1 hour sorties with a bit of briefing and debriefing involved, my employer cares deeply about my future as I’m my own boss!

Don't worry about FCOM pre study . Try to get a copy of the checklist flows and get a handle on those , time well spent . Be prepared for multiple rookie instructors with big EGO's needing to be stroked and you will do just fine .

Congrats. Then you did well for yourself. Myself still stuck in classic aviation, tried both worlds as in GA and airlines. Honestly both are crap and I am glad that at least some of us manage to improve themself properly. Going ME is for sure NOT the way to go. But anyway....who ever listens....

So very true. Is there anything else then Rookies in Instruction? Last time I actually had a seasoned man as TRE(meaning he actually was OLDER than me with MORE experience, so actually there was a chance that you would learn something apart from - "you should have asked for the weather for ALL alternates"(and we all know to which one the company wants me to go, yes, yes, always play the boring game - well, I am TO old for that **** to play in a sim) was 8 years ago.....

Normally, for ME airlines - if you know your SOP's(even being the worst pilot in the world) and you will be fine(IF not even be the next follow up TRE).

My fellow pilots ,
Those golden days of aviation are never coming back. Telme am airline a region where people were and are happy . I was at my airline it made me fly alott, dead headings , midnight departures followed by very early mornings and well the salary was a joke . Still I stuck around for 6 months without salary knowing any other airline I join in my country my terms and conditions will further deteriorate. Now I am night be unaware or not educated about various other airlines and their terms and conditions but I think taking into everything in account , Ek isn’t a bad deal . I heard someone here making a remark about third world living conditions and mentality well I am from a third world country and for me Dubai will be an upgrade in terms of living , airline in terms of current salary , less flying and the big shiny jet . You win some you loose some , there is not perfect airline . That’s what I think from my very limited experience in aviation . So while this is happening I will be in denial about the negatives and keep my self focused and positive . Good CRM and attitude is no good on a great day and flying conditions but in bad conditions and days .
