@RV, yes the drivers are not treated well or paid properly but that is not the issue.
Utter crap, accident rates are directly linked to the competency and culture of drivers
Accidents on these highways happen every minute regardless who's driving, it's nothing to do with EK

Things seem a lot better than they were about 7-8 years ago but there are still so many idiots on the road. Look at the city walk incident , it's funny how in certain western cities you have bycycles , horses , trams and cars on the road in worse weather conditions and people still manage to drive better than they do in Dubai!

Rosytn ,
From what I heard the car hit a stationary car on the side of the road at high speed . That suggests that the driver may have fallen asleep . Suggests . If that's the case then it is not tough luck or fight a better fight , it means the the drivers which are contracted to safely drive us to work should have their scheduled examed to see if it is being safe or we are all at risk becasue we don't want to spend more money on more rested drivers . I don't know exactly what went on but it's not simply a case of oh well dubai roads are dangerous .

I'm afraid that the drivers are worked just like us! No matter how tired I am after a flight, I force myself to stay awake and watch the driver just out of self preservation. Although I normally have to direct him, even though they seem to be able to find me for pick up for a flight ;-)

Not having a pop at you personally as I agree with your point. However, if we want answers, and we really are as concerned as posters make out, why not ask? Send in a Confidential Safety Report and ask why they have to work six days off a week? Ask why they do 10 hour shifts and often without the breaks stipulated? Ask why the driver involved in the accident was fined 500 dhs for a late pick? Ask if taking 20% of his monthly salary for one misdemeanour is part of a 'just' culture? Ask if they threatened him with disciplinary action if it happened again? Ask if this was no doubt on his mind two days later when he hit the police car at 4am?
Because asking on here will get you nowhere. Force the Company to give us the answers we want, not your fellow colleagues. We already know the answers, let's hear it from the Company. Please do not let our own apathy contribute to acceptance of unacceptable practices. We have the ideal reporting system for concerns such as this. We need to use it.
Is it not our own lives at stake too?

Thats Why
Well having a small talk with one of these poor guys was a shock . they are under special contracts were more than 50% of the salary they get from EK is taken by that higher manager in EK who owns a small subcontracted company, the company pays around 6500 per a driver while he only gives them extremely hard living conditions and 2600 only , now some of them are doing overtime too on that uber similar company.

A lovely Pakistani driver drove me home a couple of days ago. University educated, but his parents passed away, so he now has to provide for his 4 sisters. He has been driving us for 7 years. He had always dreamt of being a Pilot. However, no resources to achieve his dream. In the last few years he has listened to many EK Pilots with tales of woe, and hatred of their company, and hence dislike of their job, and subsequent lifestyle. He says it is a blessing from above that he never became a Pilot. How far our career has fallen, that our drivers feel so sorry for us.........

He did explore the option of bagging the company, I shut it down, I to support my family.
I don't deny that this man is well educated, I had the feeling that he could take advantage of someone's good nature, pity for him pilots are tight.

THIS JUST IN:
Buckle up, don't break the law!
UAE law will soon make seat belts compulsory, even for passengers in the back of vehicles. We’ve had instances of employees driving without wearing a seat belt. This is now a violation of our own company policy.
If you use vehicles at work, or take company transport, buckle up where applicable.
Studies show that wearing a seat belt increases your chance of surviving a road accident. If you don’t wear your belt, you could be thrown through the windscreen by the sheer force of the impact. Or if you’re in the back seat, you could also be thrown forward, injuring yourself and those in front.
Make sure you always buckle up to protect yourself, your family and your colleagues.
