Nonsense. Thousands of pilots go through their careers flying many different types successfully! And there are more than just Boeings and Airbii out there...

Just know your current aeroplane!

Seaman Staynes,

LDA to 12L is 3600m and touchdown at 1100m would left 2500m remaining.

I do and 2500 m at touchdown is plenty when dry. LDA @2000 and that includes 50' over threshold

A380 with BTV (low equivalent braking) = @2200m (1.15) at @ 380t. It does appear that the 777 G/A was flown for prevention of a personal meeting, although giving respect to the crew for doing what was required by the company procedures. Shame they then appear to have deviated from the SOP procedure it seems.

Good day

I heard the age for command thing too... I tell you... quite a few of us are waiting for course dates. If they do something like that, there will be a massive queue to resign! I think it will not happen and if it does they really dont know what they are doing. Age had nothing to do with this "incident", and they know it. Most airlines in the world nowadays have young captains, only because times are changing and people start earlier... I know 45 year old captains that act like they are 15 and 20 year old FOs that are very mature.

Why would I wait say 5 years for my upgrade now that I am ready and I meet the requirements (when already EK wants more hours than any other airline I know) when I can go to QR and upgrade in 3? Seriously... I dont know what they are thinking, but if that is their solution to the problem, good luck! Im out of here!

With re to the age rumor - many FO's were previous captains at other airlines. So let
s say A 30 year old CRJ/737/757/MD11/etc captain from XYZ goes to EK and now is deemed too young to upgrade? I dont see the logic...

"but due to implied threat of tea and biscuits and possibly having to go in the sim for landing practice, he decided to GA"
Seaman you are totally right.
Next on the agenda is a course about relearning Airmanship which was whipped out by the Muppets as well.
Hope the whispers from 3rd floor get louder, they are partially guilty for this accident!

You can not relearn what did not have in the first place.

I was called in the office for landing at 1100m, the reported tail wind was 13kts but it was 21kts on the FDR, was told I must not land outside the TD zone, told the habibi that the OMA says that the captain should consider a G/A, I considered it and decided to land, was then told its the safer option to G/A in this case, told habibi that with the performance degradation its better to land if the runway is long enough. some group of pilots only worked in EK and believe the EK way is the only way.

FOLD includes the distance from 50ft as well and the rule of thumb is that an extra 50ft over the threshold adds 1000ft to the landing distance, so the that off from the distances above. Also probably more appropriate to use OLD in this case since FOLD adds the 15% to cater for the face that the line pilot is not a test pilot, flare technique etc. Since they were already touched down, only ground roll is a factor.

So AB3 should have been about 2408m, with of course max manual available.

Not trying to second guess the decision to go around, just making the point that 2500m of concrete is enough. I am sure there would have been an invitation to a meeting though...

Definitely the punitive 'tea & biscuits' organizational culture at Emirates has contributed to this accident. The runway was long enough and should have been used. Interesting article I found that speaks of a non-punitive management response (among other things) as being desired where errors occur, in order to promote safety.

Reminds me of the Indian Airlines crash at Mangalore in 2010. Same similar punitive style culture!

it has been over a month now, what will happen to the pilots?
are they still with Emirates? or are they doing remedial training ?
(not trowing any stones at them, living in a glasshouse myself...)
