Troff is certainly not condoning the story so far, but there are two sides, and we have heard one.
He's sure the Norwegian diplomats are working overtime to straighten this situation out, and that the Norwegian will be "set free" (read: "deported") before too long.
Expo 2020? The damage is already done. Public has a short attention span. Good. Officials deciding the winner may have a better memory. Not so good.
What does this have to do with driving airplanes, anyway?

Troff; some of us airplane drivers might actually want to bring a female to the sandpit - so I find this story most interesting and relevant to the forum.

Cheers.

In many countries applies the same rule, not just in Dubai. If you accuse someone of a rape you can end up in prison if the accusation turns to be false. We don't know both sides of the story yet. Also I tend to be suspicious about media who find a small sparkle somewhere and present it as fire in order to sell and make money.

First the unfortunate Aussie woman and now this Norwegian (plus countless others perhaps). An absolute travesty. I hope they hang the rapist by his nuts (doubt it). A clear Dubai/UAE Government policy change is in order if they expect to not scare off tourists as the economy begins to turn....

Shouldn't the topic be 'Human rights in Dubai". Male expats too, are humans or were perceived and treated as ones before they came to this place,

Norwegian pardoned

thank god for social media and the western media took this story and ran with it.

My Way News - Dubai pardons woman at center of rape dispute

Norwegian girl was pardoned. But will have emotional scars forever. I'm glad she was brave enough to report it and the other asshole got 13 months in jail. He should get 20 years.

I suspect their bid for the 2020 Expo wouldn't look nice when they throw rape victims in prison for rape.

What a place, come to Dubai, rape a woman, if she reports it, she goes to jail....Lebanese and Persian guy's paradise

Chances of Dubai getting EXPO 2020 with such human rights violations, what a joke?! They have the cheek for thinking they have a chance to get it and why should they be allowed to bid for it anyway under such violations!

I am not making any conclusion since I do not know all the details but it is hard to believe this story about the 'rape'.
A few facts make me have my doubts : 1) Knowing that some of the western media are intentionally attacking with bull...t other countries for various reasons whenever they get the chance 2) Finding a woman for sex is so easy in Dubai (in fact it is much easier than in many European countries) and most locals are rumoured to be really 'good gentlemen' since they are generous and pay big amount of money (this is what I have been told from some Russian and European women who live there and give service to gentlemen in exchange of money).
3) Amount of rapes in this country is definitely much lower than many western and Asian countries (this is by official statistics).
4) The reputation of women from Scandinavian countries and many other countries in Europe who are a bit more 'liberal in sex' compared to women from some other countries, especially in their holiday trips.
So for these 4 main reasons I will not take any side. But I do agree if that was a true rape then the offender should be jailed for a long period.

Well Ex, its a matter of priorities and tactics. For the most part myself, the wife and the kids have virtually nothing to do with the local populace, a circumstance that plenty of us expats choose as a means to avoid having to deal with some of the rather "interesting" local perceptions and laws.
It does appear that those who strike trouble here are either naive, foolish or in some cases just plain unlucky.
Whatever the reasons, it pays to be discreet, it pays to limit interaction and most importantly it pays to have a plan.
Thats how we do it.
