Statistics Again

Well I guess it had to happen.

In order to optimize the roster to avoid any overtime the CRS has to be restricted further. This to make sure that the current human intervention can be avoided by allowing the bid system to input those nasty flights most were trying to avoid.

What other programming will be put in “under the hood” will also be a grey area I’m sure.

Clearly roster satisfaction will get worse “to meet the business demand”. On the bright side it will probably distribute the unpleasant elements in a more balanced way than simply taking someone off their requested trip because they might go into productivity.

It does make me laugh though. The management is obsessed with cutting employee costs further and increasing productivity at all costs. Crew lifestyle is the very last consideration again. However the employee costs have decreased slowly to 12.8 % of expenses. Fuel has climbed to 40%.
12.8% is impressive by any airline standard and this has decreased from 13.2% the previous year and from 15.9% in 2010.

But it is a law of diminishing return. This graph can only flatten out. There are much bigger fish to fry in the fuel area but as we all know, they don’t have the skill to do this apart from attack it with a hammer and the usual techniques of threaten and punish or fiddle around the edges with delayed APU start, idle reverse etc.

To me it seems all this energy is expended in the wrong areas. This is probably because they need to justify those bonuses with unscientific statistics and the appearance of doing something meaningful. Pressure from above must translate into a flogging below. A very third world mentality embraced by many of the ostensibly first world management.

So they continue to disenfranchise the very people that have some control over the single major cost item and who understand the many areas in which this cost is accumulated and could be meaningfully reduced with some innovative thinking.

Why would you only punish but not reward with the figures showing what they do? Surely an equally and always applicable profit share scheme and an abolition of the dangerously motivating bonus scheme would be the way to address both issues?

Where we are right now, a 1% increase in employee costs is less than 33% of a 1% rise in fuel costs.

Now there is a statistic.

Totally agree with you.

A very third world mentality embraced by many of the ostensibly first world management.
Anyone who thinks any part of this place is first world, needs their head examined. The whole ethos here is to make money (and lots of it) for the leaders. We're here to do that for them and if we don't like it, we leave. Hardly a problem for them though when there is a huge queue waiting to join in the fun.

From what I understand, the cabin crew have had their bids minimised for some time now, limiting the amount of bids they can place each month..
I was told the limit is 5 with no avoid option?

I'm guessing this could soon be in place for us also.

Surely an equally and always applicable profit share scheme.....
a) Remove the 12 month limit. When the target is reached the applicable share is awarded whether it takes 8 months, 12 months or 15 months.

b) Change it to a percentage scheme over 12 months. If we make the target then 100% of the applicable share is awarded. If we fall short by 10% then 90% is awarded........

If the figures are currently being massaged to award nothing then with the above we would (a) be awarded eventually and fully or (b) be awarded something regularly/annually.

Well done to those who complained about the system (but probably did not bother working it out)...
Now I am sure it is going to be even better! Once again, well done!

I think the whole system is about to fail, there are just too many rules and restrictions placed on it to allow it to work as it is intended.

The system itself is actually a fantastic product.Left to do its job, with only the required FTL's and a max flying figure it would produce good results.

When you begin adding false restrictions like max days off in a row or, more particularly, something as tight as min 89 hours max 92-- then the system falls apart.

They could increase crew utilization (save money) and keep people happy--if they would let it do what it was designed to do.

It really is a sad indictment of the way this Company is heading after reading that latest email. Management, may I make three suggestions;

1) Employ the correct number of pilots to fly such a busy monthly schedule. That should allow the removal of 'phantom pilots' in the bid.

2) Remove most of the punitive restrictions placed in CRS and let it do it's job.

3) If you can't get it to work with the 3500 pilots we have, speak to an airline that can. Delta manage it quite nicely with 12,000 pilots doing domestic, International and a massive variation in fleet!

I have a fourth suggestion but I'd get banned if I wrote that here!

What is that issue Harry?
Allow unions and actually listen to the pilots? It will never happen. They are way too arrogant.

Do you honestly think the company gives two hoots about a few (or many) pilots complaining? This latest development is all about the company having its way. Definitely not because they want to improve things for us...

What a nice Email from J A...

by reducing the avoid and a few little things "it will ease pressure on the rostering system"....

Ohhhh poor system, it get's overpressured so easy.... maybe it should get some vacation that little system... or upgrade the computers that are the rostering system....

hahahahha

It's again only the pilots fault.... of course the comapny with their 1000 litttle rules they implemented over the years, has nothig to do with it...

bad bad pilots.... you even overpressur the rostering system....

Best Email ever....

Thx for that....

What's wrong with all of the EK Pilots? Come on guys...just fly your roster to the old "contract" limit of 75'ish hours (prior to overtime) - and come to a grinding halt !! Sick days/Fatigue Days whatever it takes...just do what was "contractually" required of you and no more...

Bidding/Bid rules....??? Let's see the bid system overcome that .....

I deleted the email from JA regarding the bidding disaster.

Was there something in there stating the amount of bid requests we are limited to? One guy in a previous post mentioned 5. That does ring a bell but i'm not certain. I just recall that we cant use "avoid".

Does anyone have a definite answer on this mess and how I can bid?

Actually, the current system is fine!!! If they would use it correctly.

A 'long term' OT scheme is even worse than the one we have now. They will work some pilots like dogs for a set of months, then force them into leave or less flying so that in the end there is no productivity pay.

Personally, I'd prefer never to fly into OT. I would rather have the time off to try and recover and have a life.

Just allow OT when it is needed in the very few odd times when something occurs with crewing and, at the same time, allow the bid system to function the way it was designed to do.

This road they are moving down is NOT promising.

Actually this is quite correct. Crew bids have been minimised to 5 bids maximum.
Crew also had an email stating - No more 'Avoid' and also no more 'Buddy Bid'.
Same reasons given for crew - avoid disruption, ease pressure etc...and this was justified by using the example of "Pursers only used this option x amount of times for x month so it shouldn't affect everyone" - Pursers are the smallest group of crew from the list (PUR,SFS,FG1,GR1,GR2) so it really doesn't encompass the entire crew now does it.
Trying to make people believe much?

I feel for crew and F/D alike.

Btw just to add - crew FTL's have seem to vanished from Cabin Crew Manuals - No max upper limit

The way I see it is that we now will get a higher bid satisfaction as there will be less choices available. The company has solved the problem for all the whingers....so no more complaints please
