No HOLDING this morning!!

This morning, a big surprise, when on descent advised to expect NO HOLDING as the new computer has it all sorted. In actual fact ATC requested A/C to speed up!
Will this be standard now on arrival into DXB??

You are joking aren't you. Until Dubai gets slot times there will be very little change.

Rule 3 - the AMAN (Arrival manager) will give you a slot time based on all the arrivals through all the 'gates' depending on a designated landing rate per hour.

Capt Groper - Glad you approve!

The, finally up and running, AMAN system is a big improvement over the old inbound flow system. No it won't mean no holding. As Rule3 says, until Dubai Airports allocate and enforce proper landing slots, we will have to deal with more arrivals per hour than the current runway system can accommodate. AMAN has provided a much more even flow and more accurate holding times and you can usually expect to follow the star for a 10-15nm final. Accurate arrival rates can be set for unusual circumstances like single runway ops or LVO's so it should be much better for fuel planning etc.

All we need now is a decent Departures manager system too.

DB's new AT3 computer system on the other hand is not much fun...

ABU DHABI: Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has successfully implemented Arrival Manager System (Aman), being the first operational AMAN in the Middle East region.

This remarkable implementation is a milestone towards reducing the crowded airspace over the UAE. The new system is a part of Air Traffic Management used to arrange arrivals of aircraft into a safe, smooth and efficient air traffic flow for the arrivals to Dubai International Airport.

“The successful implementation of Aman is in pursuit of optimising the use of the UAE airspace. This reiterates UAE’s commitment to make air navigation provision environmentally friendly,” stated Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, director-general of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority.

“The UAE is the first in the Middle East region to introduce such a sophisticated tool,” Al Suwaidi added.

The implementation of Aman opts for optimised use of the available resources to reduce delay for arriving traffic and minimises the impact on the environment by reducing holding and low-level vectoring.

The news of implementing Aman was well received by environmentalists as such a step is expected to reduce the aircraft holding, which would in turn result in less fuel burn and consequently less CO2 emissions.

“The Aman implementation is a very good example of co-operation between GCAA, Dubai Air Navigation Services and Dubai Airport. This will definitely be a model for unconditional co-operation between the units for the well-being of the country,” commented Ahmed Al Jallaf, executive director of Air Navigation Services and chairman of the National Airspace Advisory Committee.

“We are continuously working to improve the level and quality of services provided to our customers,” he added.

The project was successfully delivered thanks to the vision and hard work of Abdulla Al Hashimi, director of Air Traffic Management, and Hamad Al Belushi, head of ANSP Research and Dataset.

Abdulla stated: “The Aman software is specifically designed to provide electronic assistance in metering and sequencing arrivals streams of traffic to particular points, such as arrival gates or runway thresholds.

“The planning and sequencing function of the Aman system also aims to enhance safety by reducing controller workload and improving the situational awareness, particularly in cases such as bad weather, runway closures and missed approaches.”

Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre (SZC) is the largest and most advanced Air Traffic Management facility in the Middle East.

The Centre today handles more than 2,100 air traffic movements per day for the eight international airports in the UAE as well as the over-flying movements.

The Centre hosts nine air traffic sectors and the approach air traffic services to Al Ain International Airport.

I am talking about slot times not a sequencing tool. A Flow computer like Aman was demonstrated { in the old UAE centre } to Dubai management more than 5 years ago, but the GODS from up the road weren't interested.

Should be interesting again when 30R closes for resurfacing 10+ hours a day starting in May/June.......

Extensive Holding Tonight

Holding commenced at DESDI before 2230 UAE time. Acft crossing LABTA and ENASA up to FL370. When will the "GODS" in OMDB get their heads out of the sand and introduce slot times. Based on what I saw some acft looked like holding for maybe an HOUR.

OMDB is an absolute CIRCUS run by Clowns.

I seriously believe Dubai has reached its capacity. The morning peak 0900-1100 is a nightmare on a good day. Add a bit of fog and delays stretch on for hours. The Mrs' flight in tonight was an hour late at 0030 after leaving on time.
There would appear to be no way to further increase the flow rate, so what's the solution? What are we going to do with all the extra aircraft coming?
A major problem for EK's expansion and world domination plans. Perhaps force smaller or LCCs out to DWC earlier?

Turtle, I think you're runway closure info is a little out of date, unfortunately it's gonna be a lot worse than that.

Oh....didnt know that. Sorry!

What presently keeps EK from using DWC as an alternate? Haven't been there, but how much work would it take to have some buses there and a immigration office that could clear paxs and bus back to DXB if it gets really nasty?

just spitballing here

Evidently, it appears that location is prime in the decision making process for EK. If the forces that be were to put all the non EK flights into Al Makhtoum it might make a slight improvement into DXB. I would think since the vast majority of EK pax are transits, the need for proximity to downtown Dubai is not as important as a better, more efficient arrival process not to mention the massive savings on fuel expense with a move over to the bigger airport by Jebel Ali.

I have found that my decision process regards to uplift of fuel started including not only the EK arrivals but more so the Air India Express, Cathay's, Sinagpore's Jetairway's arrivals as well as our own.... all contributing to the worsening delays.

I find myself wondering just how long this can go on... but I've been thinking that for a few years now... and somehow, it's still continues. The "Trombone" arrivals while a step in the right direction, seems to be already over burdened by traffic.

The next big thing? Maybe the PRM approaches, maybe an AR RNP approach to both runways from either side of the airport.... who knows.

But as the title of the movie suggests... "Something's Gotta Give". It just can't go on like this. Yet it does....

DWC v DXB

I had an idea last night.

Why not build a new airport, say 20 miles south, in clear air space, with no heavy built up areas that close...then move all scheduled traffic there.....

Might need a high speed transit system too.....

The perhaps make DXB the down town corporate airport.

Then I woke up.... sorry....

For all those 'non Emirates' flights getting in the way!! How do you think Emirates operate?? All the countries EK operate to get equal rights to fly to the UAE in return......thats the way the world operates!!
Plus Dubai is slot regulated (ACL) however Emirates are exempt I believe!!

Aman is a great tool but it only organises what it is given!!

It's all moot. Isn't 30L being shut down completely for a few months for a Cat3B upgrade? And then resurfacing to commence? What are the particulars, Tower Ranger?

Single runway ops. Ahhhh. Good thing the fuel bill should be part of next fiscal year...

Dubai hasn't reached capacity. The Dubai controllers have. With all due respect, you can land 34 an hour because you seem to be doing f&$k all else with 31! Some of the controlling of late is a shambles. Was told the other night that you were "loosing" it with 31 per hour so we told the AMAN that and suggested 28!. Poor to be honest.

On the other hand, if the regulator would get their heads outta their arses and approve simultaneous approaches (based on a safety case), the potential to boost the arrival rate significantly isn't too far away. Oh, and allow them to provide wake to 4nm instead of touchdown. That would probably help too!..... Gonna be fun during the summer if the said resurfacing is going ahead...delays, delays, delays.....round and round DESDI we go....

While I don't know what the situation was the other night, I doubt that 31/hr for DXB in itself would be causing us to "lose it". To be fair though, 31 into DXB plus all the extras (SHJ, DWC, even RAK and MIN) can put quite a strain on a very tight and complex bit of airspace. That is what is reaching the limit in my opinion.

That and a new ATC computer system that is anything but user friendly
