Hefty fine for pilot’s road rage

Read in 7days today....

A pilot has been fined Dhs5,000 for a road rage incident on a Dubai highway.

The American was fined at Dubai Court of Misdemeanors yesterday after he was found guilty of insulting an Emirati who worked as a Dubai Customs inspector.

Official records state that last October, the 31-year-old Emirati and his friend were driving on Al Sufouh Road when the 34-year-old defendant started beeping his horn.

“The defendant was driving behind my car,” the victim said. “I gestured to him to be patient until we passed an exit. All of a sudden he overtook me then stopped his car in front of mine. It forced me to put the brakes on. He then stepped out of his car and came near my window and insulted me using bad language.”

The Emirati’s passenger confirmed the incident in the courtroom. However, the American insisted during the investigation and in court that he did not insult the inspector.

“I was in the right lane on Al Sufouh Road when he entered it and stopped,” the defendant said. “I put on my brakes and blasted my horn but he wouldn’t move. He gestured at me asking ‘what did I want’.

I couldn’t control myself so I stepped out of my car and asked why he had stopped. I told him such behaviour was dangerous and then drove off.”

The Emirati took down the registration number and made a complaint to Dubai Police. “I received a call from police asking me to go to their station,” the American added.

This sounds like my drive everyday between Dubai and Abu Dhabi ...enter Turkeyslapper as the "victim"

From the Oz Foreign affairs site ref driving in the UAE:

Road travel can be dangerous due to unsafe driving practices such as speeding, tailgating, poor lane discipline and reckless overtaking
I feel for this poor bugger as I really feel helpless with some of these clowns on the road and I really have to work hard to control myself in these situations, however, I guess its still a good reminder to politely smile and let them be on their crazy way!

Cheers

I find it very hard to adopt this philosophical attitude when 'they' are endangering me and other road users. I don't mind being overtaken, and I don't mind them writing themselves off, but when their action places me in danger, or others for that matter, it's a different story.

Oh yeh I forgot this one to:

The Emirati took down the registration number and made a complaint to Dubai Police
I did this exact thing when confronted by a local on the road doing absolutely crazy and intimidating things on the road. Result = No result

I don't like my life being endangered by some self centered moron on the road either but what to do? As illustrated in the story, get angry and see where it gets you

Cheers

Do you remember playing cricket or football with your neighbours down the street as young kids and you hit six runs or kick a goal, they would get ticked off and take their bat and ball or football and walk off home throwing their toys out of the cot??

Well, as it happens, these grown ups (not mentally!) do the same thing!

Come on, I may not be fan of some cocky Americans, but a confirmation from the accuser's companion (the pax) means fxxkxll and as what we all knew. This boils down to an Emirati's words against a foreigner and as far as I'm concerned, the case is inconclusive.

Also bear in mind that when it comes to size of ego, you won't find a bigger lot than the locals here. (And did the report mention an Immigration officer? Wrong day wrong time for the accused, surely)

Though wisdom prevails and if I may quote Turkeyslapper:
I guess its still a good reminder to politely smile and let them be on their crazy way!
Lastly, it's really quite cheap to install a high resolution in car video camera (go for the dual cam model for front and back), saves you lots of talking. I basically avoided a whole lot of argument when I pointed towards my camera right after an Emirati reversed into my car, problem solved instantly.

Reminder

This and the other permanent closed thread on Teahid and many other examples are a reminder to all expats regardless of nationality, colour, race or religion that....

1. I am an expat here.

2.My freedom of speech and expression is very limited and I have to obey by their rules and views on law which may be markedly different from what I am used to. I do not believe anything the local media tells me otherwise.

3. I am here for a sole purpose and will not let anything distract me from attaining the said goal and making the exit plan.

4.Whenever in doubt, review the above 3.

Masalama.

Yeah, I'd be quite interested in type of camera. Where would I get one from?? Pictures speak a thousand words.

masalama - spot on and it is all about #3 !!

The Turtle and BritishGuy - Fwiw, I have the following (purchased in a surf / sports shop inside MoE, down by SkiDubai): HD HERO2 Motorsports Edition

And coming soon is this: Wi-Fi BacPac™ + Wi-Fi Remote Combo Kit which will make turning them on / off a straightforward matter (especially wrt to a cam in the rear window).

You can even take the SD memory card out of your camera, plug it directly into an iPad Camera Connection Kit , and then view your video immediately on your iPad in full HD.

Ideally you want one cam on the front screen and one on the rear. Now this is admittedly not cheap, but evidence wise it'd be hard to refute, and priceless for the look on a miscreants face when confronted with damning evidence (e.g. at roadside and / or in court; preferably after they've perjured themselves ).

back up time

There are some cameras that are used in the ambulances I worked on that upon impact, would set the camera off and it would actually show video from 10 seconds prior to impact.

What these cameras also allowed was for you to hit a button at the bottom of the camera when you felt the need to video tape an event about to happen or what just happened.

I was watching BBC and they were interviewing a local Syrian who was under attack by his own gov't. He asked, "WHERE IS AMERICA?"

He didn't ask, where is britain, france, or even NATO, he was begging for america.

Same guy that was dancing in the streets on 9/11 is now begging for the evil empire

My apologies but wasn't this thread about a pilots hefty fine following road rage?! Didn't take many threads to creep to the diatribe as written above.....and what exactly is the point about no wreckage being found anyway? We all saw two of the jets hit the towers even if there are doubts about the other two. Are you trying to infer that these jets didnt hit the towers? What is your point? If you do have a point, why not make it in a thread about 9/11 because I am struggling to see why you are attempting to do so in a road-rage thread!!!
