I agree with all you points regarding what hassle it is for obtaining mortgages here in Dubai. The charges are ridiculous and the lack of 'service' even more so.

However, not sure about the info you had relating to the banks having a guarantee from the provident scheme. Have you had to do this, because I didn't? Not sure why they would ask to do this as the funds are set up in the form of a trust, registered in the Isle of Man. The A & B fund are set up in one, while the C fund is in another. Not even Emirates has access to this. There is no way, therefore, that the banks can insist you guarantee this money. Having said that, maybe it's a good thing. They obviously think they can, but you know better!

Hey Scanwing,

You will most definately end up in Cedre villas (basically Silicon), Silicon Oasis or Al Waha (out behind the ranches). We looked into buying our own place and even with the cheaper prices now, it's still ridiculously expensive and you will have to add your own money to the allowance as the allowance is only good if you are buying an apartment or sh!t villa.

Dubai is still bloody expensive whatever anyone tells you, and it's difficult to save much money as an F/O if you are here with wife and kids (i've got 1+2).

Think carefully mate.

Good for you if you didn't have to sign a bank guarantee letter from your employer, you had one less headache and few less visit to the HQ! This letter gives the bank the right, in the event of a default payer, to access money that you have within your employer, i.e. salary, providend fund. Once you have paid off your debt, you then ask for a clearance letter from the bank (it comes with a nice charge of 100 Dhs) to void this instruction to your employer. You then present it to HR who will in turn give you a letter that your are clear of a bank guarantee. You then put this precious letter in a nice safe place, you will need it once it's time for you to get out of the country..... And don't forget to have it stamped! Welcome to the year 1431!

Now A-B or C fund, my guess would be the A fund only, but then again, someone who will pull a runner will not be able to access his B fund I think, I can't give you a definite answer on that one, only because I don't know better

Nuuk, this must depend on the bank. I've taken out several mortgages in Dubai (not all at the same time!) and never been asked for any kind of letter like that. The only security they want is the property and security cheques for the amount of the mortgage.

DubaiForever,

Don't waste your cash mate. It is a pretty straight forward assessment and it might be on an Airbus anyway. When I did mine (a while ago granted) Airbus guys were tested on Airbus and Boeing on Boeing. All the rest were on the A310.

Can F/O's with families make it easily financially?

I heard from a training captain that it might be hard for a F/O to make ends meet with a family to support and 1 child that goes to school...
That is WITHOUT a working wife...
Anybody know any more about this?
thanks!

Can ethiad or any of the other mid east airlines employ bankrupt pilots?
Are there any clauses in the contract to prevent employing bankrupt pilots
or could there be any problems with visas/immigration etc?

Hi!

If you are at Delta Airlines, there are very few reasons why you would want to come to EK. From the UAE? Hate living in the US? HAVE to fly a widebody now?...maybe EK would be better.

I'm assuming an FO brings in between 7500 and 8000 USD each month. If you are in company housing, have 2 kids not in school yet, would it be safe to assume you could save at least 3000 of that per month. I have researched extensively on the cost of living in Dubai (right down to how much a razor costs) and we have friends living there that confirm those prices. I find it hard to believe that one can spend 7000 USD per month regardless of a family or not.

For those claiming that FOs with families cannot save any money, please explain where all the extra expenses are coming from.

Thanks.

Trent, if you've done your research on how much a razor costs over here, then search the forum for what you are looking for in costs. There are several FO's that have posted on here what their cost of living is. Education (no rise in allowances again this year yet schools are still increasing), medical, buses, vehicles, insurance, outfitting the villa, tickets home, groceries, getting the wife out so she doesn't go mad, keeping kids entertained, and on and on and on. Yes, it is very difficult for a new hire FO to save cash for at least the first two years, sometimes three. Keep researching.

Trent if you know people over here ask them. Far better to rely on someone you know than an annon forum.
Without kids an FO will do ok. With kids, and particularly with kids at school you will not be saving much on an FO salary. This has been discussed a million times here, try the search function as I am sure it will show where the dollars disappear to.
Command will take some as there are 1100 other FOs in front of you to be upgraded. So even if the kids are not in school now, they will be prior to upgrade.

Good luck,

the Don

Trent,

You are correct, there is no excuse for these guys to be skint. My problem is that I spend all of my cash at Hooters, or the casino, or at the local strip club.

Come on over, you'll be able to save a pile 'o cash!

I was emailed last month for a possible interview date.

Over the last 4 weeks I have emailed 3 times and
called by phone once, leaving a voice message.
So far no reply of any kind.

Any suggestions ?

I'm in the same boat. Selected dates for next week but haven't heard anything in two weeks. Sent a few emails but haven't gotten a response to any of them.

Get used to that feeling. You will get it over and over again, once hired.

Do you have a problem with your accomodation? With your bank account unjustly blocked? Have you been arrested due to a screw-up in any jingly office? Has your superior shafted you simply by insinuating something? Do you urgently need some days off because of a problem back home? Does your payslip show wrong?

Try calling for help ...... and you get the above. Get used to it quick.
