Post EMIRATES F/O Selection Program (3 days Interview)

I am about to go for my first EMIRATES Interview; some ideas or advise from some one experienced the F/O Selection Program .. what they are looking to be prepared for? Would be good to take some in-advance training: what kind and from who? Thanks!

OK SHERBAN, Look at the top right corner of the page. Click on Forum home. Then scroll down the list of forums till you find one called middle east. Plenty of stuff on Emirates in there. Also click on search, and search all forums for emirates...will be enough reading to last you for weeks.

when will they contact you

Say everything goes well with the interview and selection process.

How long will it take before they will contact you to see if you have the job or not. They told me between 4 to 6 weeks.

I hope it will be earlier than that.

I having read a lot of posts about the emirates interview (F/O interview)! But all information are spread!!!

We could concentrate all information about the interview here (what to expect, What are the people like, What tech questions, sim ride, psychological tests......)

Day 1
- Welcome brief - Paperwork and documetation
- Technical examination
20 questions - 30 min (Airbus- questionare / Boeing - ?)
20 questions - 30 min ( ACE - The Technical Pilot Interview)
- Simulator assessment (Visual Traffic, V1 Cut follow by ILS CAT1 (go around) and CAT II approach full stop)

Day 2
- Psychometric testing (+/- 300 questions 90min) MMPI type
- Assessment centre workshop ( observe by 1 psychologist and 2 chief pilots)
- Interim Assessment Advice (IAA) is an individual meeting with a Flight Crew Recruitment Specialist, where you will be advised, based on your performance in our selection activities, whether or not you will continue on with the Selection Program ( group work)
- Tour (company medical clinic and sample accommodation)

Day 3
- Psychometric testing (personal interview)
- Feedback on your profile and a panel interview
- Medical

EK Interview
Hi there

This is a mail, I received before I went to Dubai for my interview in March this year. Pretty accurate. I am A330 rated and did my Sim ass. on the 330 as well. So I think they have changed that. Before you were supposed to go on other type than rated.

Look for the books mentioned below:

-Handling the Big Jets - D.P. Davies (or so..)
-Prepare for your Emirates Interview - Capts. X,Y & Z

With these you are very well prepared.

Here it goes:

First of all don't worry about it.it's not tough at all as you think.And second don't even think about delaying your interview.At the moment they are interviewing around 12 people a week and if you delay it you never know when will be your second chance for the interview.40 days are enough to prepare for it.
So the interview goes like this.You arrive in your hotel & they will give you an EK interview file full of information and a one page form to be filled before the interview.The file contains mostly the information about the company and the interview process.(The information is almost same as the famous book "Preparing for your Emirates interview-Captains x,y&z".You have to find this book.its very good.
First day in the morning you will have a briefing about EK.Typically there will be 4 guys in your group.it is very important that you get along with them and have fun during the interview.The guys in my group were perfect,I hope you have the same luck.Because there are guys fighting in those group games and ******* their interview.(sorry about my bad language).After that you will take the technical exam.30 questions in 30 minutes.The questions are very similiar to those in the book Preparing for your Emirates interview.You can find all the answers to those Questions in the book"ACE the Technical interview-Gary V.Bristow"(which is a 1000 Question book-very good although some answers in the book are wrong).Also you can find the answers to those questions in the other famous book Handling the big Jets-D.P. Davies(very good book you have to read it).The questions in the exam might be any kind of ATPL stuff.So if you have your old full of dust ATPL notes its time to take them out.Actually the only things that you can study about the interview is the Technical exam and some of those critical & dangerous Panel interview questions and how to answer them(I made a research about panel interview questions I will give you detailed information on them in the following days).The rest you can't prepare because they are the things about you and your personality.(the group games,psychometric etc etc).
After the Tech exam you will have a briefing about the simulator.Take care about the tips they give you during this brief.(like they will tell you the runway12R treshold is 3nm to the sea shore which means during the visual circuit if you fly a base leg following the beach you will be fine).Fter the brief they will take you to the simulator which will be A310 or B777.I had mine in the 777.I will give you all the information but there are things that I cant put together now also I have to go out soon but dont worry I will continue tonight.The sim is very straight forward but I will warn you about the things that you have to be careful later.The first day finishes.first day is very important.if you feel that you were successful the first day the rest you will do fine because you will have that confidence.
Second day dress code is smart casual which means "no tie no jeans".its a relaxed and fun day.in the morning you will have 4 group games where you have to talk in the group and try to get along with them.What they want to see is how you are acting in the group not if your task is successful.More about group games later.(I prepared for the group games with my girlfriend and it made alot of help.You can try the same thing).After that they will take you one by one in a room to inform you if you were successful during the first phase of the interwiev and if you will continue about the 3rd day.Don't make stress about this because as far as I understood you pass it unless you have something very wrong(like fighting in the group games or answering only 5 questions correct in the tech exam)All my group passed the first phase.in the afternoon they take you to a tour to show the accomodation,the EK clinic etc etc.And a lunch in a 5 star hotel.
3rd day you might get bored because early in the morning you will get 2 of those stupid psychometric tests and an interview with a psycholog.it is not something that you can prepare for.Also dont worry about it unless your character comes out a pscho.in the afternoon you will have the panel interview witha line captain and a recruitment officer.Very relaxed interview if you take it easy.No tech questions only things about you,your past career and things like why you want to join EK?what you can give to EK?What you don't like about DXB?What are your weaknesses?.....The thing is NEVER answer in a negative way and NEVER tell bad things about your present or past employers.What I mean about not answering ina negative way is don't tell them that getting angry very quickly is your weakness.Spend some time on this kind of questions and find an answer that if you look in other point of view it can be seen as a strength(like sometimes you are focusing and working too hard on something that you forget you have a family.This can be seen as a weakness from family point of view but its a strength for EK).Also there will be some situations that you should be political.Like not answering the question exactly in the way the question is asked.
Later the last step which is a medical.Nothing unusual same stuff that we are having every year.Actually I had a problem with the medical in my color sight.I can distinguish individual colors perfectly but when it comes to that color test book I fail.Usually what they do is to put another color sight test and prove that my color sight is OK.The same thing happened and I proved again that my color sight is safe to fly but I dont know what EK will think abot it.Basically this was only problem I had.
I will keep sending you emails as I remember more.Don't worry and take it easy.
I am sure you are a great guy like Volkan.He is like my brother now.Hope to see you in DXB(if both of us can pass)
Take care and study hard for 40 days and during the interview.
By the way keep uptodate about the EK fleet,company,Dubai etc etc...They might ask you.

The sim session goes like this.
DXB Rwy12R departure for a visual circuit to land Rwy 12R.The guy next to you mentions that you are the captain and all decisions will be given by you.Also he will mention that he will act like an average F/O.So you should be careful about some missing call outs,some wrong actions(like cutting off the live engine during engine failure if you dont guard the live engines cut off valve).During visual No F/D no auto thrust.Straight forward.(in my case I wanted a time check of 45 sec at the end of downwind from the guy but he didnt call out the time is over so basically you have to take care of everything.)
Second departure is a CAT I condition departure to Muscat.its a kind of LOFT senario.Eng failure after V1.(the guy didnt call out the engine failure in my case)The thing is you have to decide if you go to Muscat engine out or you turn back to DXB.The facts are DXB is CAT I condition which is your base.Muscat is CAVOK but high terrain on your route(like 12000 Grid MORA).Both Volkan & me decided to remain in DXB.Actually even if you decide to go in Muscat they will turn you back to DXB because they want to see a single engine ILS to minimums & single engine go around.F/D and A/T ON.They want you to fly direct Sharjah VOR then fly a radial outbound.(in my case we had 3 miles to the VOR and no instructions from ATC.I told the guy next to me to ask ATC what he wants us to do next.So actually the guy next to you only sits there and configures the aircraft as you like)
The last situation is you are flying towards 12R ils on a 30 degree intercept angle.its a simple raw data ils.But not as simple as that.As far as Volkan told me they give a 60-70 kts tailwind for you to miss the G/S.(I didn't notice this but it happened.But there were guys in my group who were able to fly the ils down to minimums)So basically I ****** the ils(sorry again).I tried to dive into the G/S but then I remembered words of Volkan mentioning never to do such a thing so I told them I dont find the Approach safe so I made a Go Around.
I dont know what they think of my sim but for me the first 2 parts were perfect.
About 777 its a very easy to fly aircraft.I've never flown a widebody in my life but I felt that way.Engine out situation is very stable and controllable.(They turn off the Auto Thrust Compensation for the sim which basically puts the initial required rudder for assymetry situation.So you fly it like a basic aircraft)

This is my interview gouge that was also posted on another site. It is a little dated but the interview for F.O.s remains essentially the same. The accomodations keep changing and the interview location has changed as well. The new Direct Entry Captain interview is the same for the first three days. If successful the DE applicant is asked to stay and fly a LOFT scenario and possible do a mini medical.
Interview experience:

I arrived in Dubai the night before the interview. A lady from Marharba Services was waiting to escort me and another interviewee through immigration and customs. That was a nice thought. Emirates pays for 4 nights lodging at the interview hotel, plus up to 100 Dh per day for food. Breakfast and lunch are included so it is hard to spend the money. The interview was mainly held at Le Meridien Hotel which makes it very convenient to rest between sessions and talk with your fellow interviewees. The three day process goes something like this: First you are split into groups of four. There are only two groups for a total of eight people interviewing at one time. Day one is a short technical exam in the morning followed by a tour of the Emirates facilities. The tech exam is pretty hard if you haven't studied. A good bit of aerodynamics, weather, performance and the like. Reading " Handling The Big Jets " by D.P. Davies, Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators, Aviation Weather and Weather Services, and the Jepp Introduction helped a lot. After the exam they show you the headquarters building, apartments, villas, medical facility, and schools for your kids. It is a pretty easy day with a nice buffet lunch at Le Meridien's beachfront hotel. The day ends with a briefing on the simulator session. The simulator is usually the Airbus 310/300, but sometimes the B-777. Day 2 is the simulator plus group exercises. The simulator profile is broken down into three segments: A manually flown (no autothrottle, no flight director ) takeoff and visual approach to a landing. Then a takeoff with an engine failure, vectors to a VOR, track a radial outbound, vectors to an ILS ( this one is with autothrottle and flight director ) . Third is a raw data approach with no autothrottle. They let you choose the seat you want to sit in and use your company/airplane procedures. The PNF will modify the procedures as necessary to fit the Airbus so you really don't have to worry about it. The group exercises are rather interesting and unique as far as aviation interviews go. They have you work with your other interviewees to solve problems or build things. You are being watched closely the whole time. It is really just to see how you work as a team and to see your leadership skills. The other part of the day is a psychological test. It is the usual MMPI type of test that you just have to answer truthfully. Day 3 starts with more group exercises then a review with a psychologist of your psychological profile which is frighteningly accurate. The psychologist will ask follow up questions on the areas that he deems important. Again they are looking for team players and for people who have a high tolerance for different cultures and the ability to adapt to living in Dubai. After the psych review is the full interview with a pilot and human resources person together. It lasts up to an hour. Apparently it has changed significantly from a technical style to more of a get to know you style. They did not ask me any technical questions. More like: " have you ever had an emergency in an airplane ", " why did you get involved in flying ", " what do you know about Islam ". " how do you think your life will change by living here ? " They do not pay for your transportation to the interview, yet they really want you to bring your wife ( if married ). They are very concerned about how you will fit in to life in Dubai because they want people to stay. If you do bring your wife they will pay attention to what she says as well. If she doesn't like Dubai or the accommodations they won't hire you. That said, only half the interviewees bring their wives. They will ask you why you didn't in the interview so have a good answer ready. Emirates is an exceptionally well run airline that is profitable and growing rapidly. I was very impressed with their facilities and their people. It isn't a place for everyone, but if you want to fly big jets on international routes it is a great place to go.


Fogrunner, what you really have to find out about is living and working in Dubai for EK. Don't worry too much about the sim,interview etc. If you really are interested get info on housing, schooling,days off, roster patterns, staff travel and the expat lifestyle. If you get an interview all well and good, but don't believe the hype, try to look at the big picture ie why you want to leave where you are and come to the desert - it could be the biggest decision of your life.

Please don't just come here because you think you will get a command in 3-4 years, look at the big picture, look at the quality of life you can expect , from my experience you will find it very hard to have a good lifestyle if you are married as an FO, single it could be OK. Just look at all the stuff written on these forums and gauge the general feeling at EK, the morale, the trust we have in management, the support you can expect. Balance that with your expectations then decide - it is up to you.

Are some newhires still going straight to the A310 frieghter? I hear that is not a good situation - you get trapped on that aircraft and then spend a lot of time flying back and forth to India - is that correct? Can a newhire on the A310 expect to change fleets to the A330/40 or the 777 in a reasonable amount of time - say less than 5 years????

The 310 freighter operation is still in its infancy so it's still too early to tell exactly how the lifestyle will pan out. As with so much else around here, it will largely hinge on whether the company adequately staffs the fleet. I have been told by some of the guys hired onto the fleet that they have been told that they can expect some European and even North Atlantic flying.

As far as changing fleets, based on past history, unless the 310 fleet was reduced or eliminated, you could count on spending a significant amount of time (all of it?) on the 310. It would be up to you as to whether that would be acceptable or not.

Some have their head fried and don't know what they enjoy anymore. Just look at the CV's being pumped out by FOs and Captains and A330guy is most decidedly in the minority. He might enjoy his time in the sand and that is his right or privilege (wait there is no privileges in the middle east) but as I metioned before there are a lot of pilots looking to leave for greener pastures.

THINK MORE THAN TWICE

Been here a while now and regret every decision to come here!!DAMN IT!! But have made our nest now must live in it and get on with it. DAMN IT!!WHY OH WHY was there nothing on pprune a few years ago giving me more of a heads up!!getting back off all these long trips feeling quite ill.Maybe havn a down day, lets see!!I am usually quite positive and optimistic generally but my family is noticing changes in me!! For those prospectives who are looking for the golden oracle FORGET DUBAI,ABUDHABI,DOHA,BAHRAIN you will be pleasantly disappointed UNLESS of course you are on the skids with your present job OR have no JOB , then this will be ok for you. (SKIDS) translated to all those coming from malaysia,bangladesh,india,philipines, thailand,all african countries,pakistan,uzbezikstan,russian fedeeration countries,nepal,tibet(are there pilots there??)MEANS DESPERATE!! but then again whats ****e for some is the GOLDEN ORACLE for others!!So lets see what the airline will look like in 2-5 years!
