EK On Time Departure Performance

Have you guys noticed the on time departure board in the Purser room before going to the busses? Holy smoke 7%-10% on time departure out of Dubai. Average 25 to 30% overall network. When so many people work 200% to get a result of 7%-10% on time departure it proves that the elastic is very very stretch don't you think? Just well reflects the state of this "scheduled Airlines" Maybe they are trying get an award for the most late airline of the year Well I guess since they are making money they will sure get a big 5X bonus for that anyway...That's what it has become. Let's enjoy the entertainment cause that's all we can do. But hurry up to have a look because somebody is probably running at this time to remove the board

Keep Discovering

The question I might have for that "statistic" is within how many minutes of schedule? The pursurs need to write a report if we are even 1 minute late. The dispatchers need to write a reason if we are more than 3 minutes late. In the USA on time is defined as within 15 minutes of schedule. See the difference?

What it boils down to is:

Why the pursers have the info and WE don't! See the trend. Pursers more important than Captains! Give the management a bollocking at the 'wash-ups', they are the pussies that let Flight Ops get ridden over

"On-time performance" at EK is defined as "any flight that leaves the same day it was scheduled".

Pilot to Redcap: "So how is boarding going?

Redcap: "Ohhhhh Kaptin, all passengers on board. Except for 43 who are missing. We will begin offloading their bags at scheduled departure time."

Pilot: "Ok, so how long will that take?"

Redcap: "Ummm...I think...maybe...ten minutes Kaptin."

Pilot: "So, about 30 minutes then?!"

Redcap: "Yes Kaptin." *wobble wobble wobble"

The only reason we have a timetable is so we know how late we really are.

When I was at EK Eng in the early 90s, a delay of more than 3 minutes attributable to maintenance would cause the engineer concerned no end of grief, even if he fixed the problem. Some pilots were helpful and creative in their "brakes off" times on pushback but nevertheless...

To be fair, the delays attributable to baggage handling and offloading have reduced considerably in the last year or two. Most delays I have experienced lately are from the ridiculous flow control and slot allocation procedures. I am sure that the ATC guys and girls are embarrassed by the whole thing too but it is something that can only be solved at the highest level in the U.A.E.

In the intelligent world the flight dispatch appliy for a slot in advance based on ETD. In DXB at present, the slot is awarded as flow control sees fit and the crew work towards that end with a reasonable allowance for unforeseen delays. The current UAE system of only awarding a slot once the flight is fully ready for start is plainly stupid. Add to that a two minute window restriction the problem becomes compounded.

I am not blaming the lads and lasses at Dubai ATC (if you are reading this) because I know that you are just working within your restrictive remit. It would be helpful however if you were to give an estimated expected delay time when transmitting the clearance. This would prevent a lot of unnecessary transmissions and give the pilots some idea of the delay to be expected.

re: PDCs, I would assume most acft operating out of Dubai would be Data Link equipped? That would certainly cut down on chatter.

The big problem is that Dubai ATC does not allocate the Slot Times, UAE ACC do, and for the purpose of The Flow Control say into Muscat FIR ...1 a/c every 5 mins through TARDI basically means only 1 a/c every 5 mins from any of the following airports can get airborne irrespective of requested cruising levels :- OMDB, OMSJ, OMRK, OMDW, OMDM and OMAA, OMAM and OMAD. You maybe the only start up thru TARDI at OMDB, but there could be several a/c at any of the other airports of which we have no knowledge, thus making it impossible for us to accurately say if there will or will not be any delays.

And as pointed out the plus or minus 2 min tolerance makes it nigh on impossible with a mix of Med/Heavy traffic, other non flow traffic and dependent rwy set up.

Why would I care about delays??? I am way too fatigued to care about anything anymore. I go to work, fly from A to B, get off, thatīs it. Nothing more, nothing less, no effort or inititative from my side anymore. Since EK doesnīt care about us, I do the same. Sad, but true...
