Airbus Wins $31 Billion Aircraft Order From Emirates (Update1)

By Massoud A. Derhally and Andrea Rothman

Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Airbus SAS, the world's largest manufacturer of commercial planes, won an order from Emirates for aircraft valued at as much as $31 billion, including 70 A350 airliners and 11 double-decker A380s.

Emirates, the biggest Arab airline, placed a firm order for 70 A350s and took options for 50 more, Chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said today at the Dubai Air Show.

The deal is a boost for the 300-seat Airbus A350, the planemaker's challenger to Boeing Co.'s 787, which is cheaper and due to enter service five years ahead of the Airbus model. The A380 order adds to the Dubai-owned carrier's backlog of 47, the largest for the superjumbo plane from any airline.

``The 350 was the most suitable aircraft for our type of mission,'' al-Maktoum said at a press conference. Asked why Emirates chose Airbus over Boeing, airline President Tim Clark said: ``The 787-9 wasn't suitable for us and the 787-10 wasn't available to us.'' Emirates is open to talking to Boeing when the 787-10 is available, he said.

The A350 order, including the options, is valued at $27.6 billion at list prices, and the A380s are worth as much as $3.5 billion. List prices do not take into account discounts usually given for large orders.

Boeing Competitor

Boeing hasn't formally offered the 787-10, a longer-range and bigger version of its 787-9. Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Scott Carson conceded that Boeing has lost the order.

``Obviously Boeing would like to win every venture we're involved in,'' he said. ``We didn't have the airplane they wanted at this time.''

Chicago-based Boeing, the second-largest planemaker, won an order for 12 of its 777 aircraft valued at $3.2 billion from Emirates, the carrier announced today. Emirates ordered the 777- 300ER model, which has a list price of about $250 million.

Emirates started in 1985 with two leased planes and now has 110 aircraft including freighters. It had 112 planes on order as of Oct. 24. The airline has added destinations in China and India, betting that economic growth in Asia's two most populous countries will spur demand for travel.

Persian Gulf carriers including Abu Dhabi's Etihad, Qatar Airways and Emirates are among the biggest customers for Airbus and Boeing as the airlines build the region into a hub for tourism and transit flights between Europe, Asia and Africa. Airbus, based in Toulouse, France, is a division of European Aeronautic, Defense & Space Co.

The 555-seat A380 overtook Boeing's 747 as the world's largest airliner after entering service with Singapore Airlines Ltd. last month. British Airways Plc said in September it will buy 12 A380 superjumbos valued at $4.3 billion.

Arab airlines are expected to increase their combined fleet almost two-thirds to 900 aircraft by 2015 from 550 in 2006, according to the Arab Air Carriers Organization.

Press release from Corporate comms, should clear things up!!

EMIRATES MAKES AVIATION HISTORY – AGAIN

· Orders 120 A350s, 11 A380s, 12 Boeing 777-300ERs

· Total order value worth over US$34.9 billion

· Largest-ever aircraft order in civil aviation

· Will be world’s largest operator of the A380s and Boeing 777s

DUBAI, U.A.E., 11th November 2007 – Emirates Airline today announced another historic civil aviation aircraft order, when it signed contracts for a 120 Airbus A350s, 11 A380s, and 12 Boeing 777-300ERs, worth an estimated US$34.9 billion in list prices.

HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Emirates’ Chairman and Chief Executive, announced the massive order at the 10th Dubai Airshow; and signed the contracts with Tom Enders, Airbus President and CEO, and Lee Monson, Vice President Middle East and Africa Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The agreement with Airbus comprises firm orders for 50 A350-900s and 20 A350-1000s, plus 50 options for the A350-900s. The first A350 will be delivered to Emirates in 2014.

Emirates also firmed up orders on the eight A380s for which it had signed letters of intent earlier this year, and placed firm orders for an additional three of the double-decker aircraft, bringing its total firm order for the A380s to 58.

The contract with Boeing is for 12 firm orders of the 777-300ERs, valued at US$3.2 billion. With this new order, Emirates now has 57 Boeing 777s pending delivery and is set to become the world’s largest 777 operator in the next few years.

Sheikh Ahmed also inked agreements today with Sir John Rose, Chief Executive of Rolls Royce for the Trent XWB engines to power Emirates’ new A350s; with Bruce Hughes, President of the Engine Alliance for the GP7200 to power its additional A380s; and with Scott Donnelly, President and CEO of GE Aviation for GE90 engines to power Emirates’ 777-300ERs.

In total, Emirates’ firm aircraft and engine orders announced today are worth US$23.4 billion – a value that increases to US$34.9 billion if the 50 options are included. This is the largest-ever aircraft commitment in civil aviation made by any airline in a single order.

Sheikh Ahmed said: “Emirates is committing close to US$35 billion today for new aircraft. Our total order includes 93 aircraft on firm order and 50 on option. Once again, Emirates is making aviation history.”

Emirates’ total order book now stands at 246 aircraft, all wide body, and worth over $60 billion US dollars. This is a massive investment which reflects our confidence in the future of air transport, and our confidence in Dubai.”

He added: “In 2003, our plan was for Emirates to have 100 aircraft by 2010. We have already surpassed that target. Growth and demand has exceeded the most optimistic projections. Dubai is investing billions to secure its future as a leading centre for business, tourism, and air transport on the global stage. Likewise, Emirates is investing in a fleet for the future, in order to support Dubai’s development, as well as the growth of air travel demand around the world.”

The new aircraft we have ordered today are all of the latest technology – they are greener and more efficient to operate. At the same time, they will allow Emirates to continue setting the gold standard in service. We intend to invest millions of dollars more to develop cutting-edge in-flight products to match our cutting-edge aircraft fleet.”

About Emirates

Based in Dubai, Emirates is one of the world’s most successful, and rapidly-expanding airlines. Its all wide-body fleet of 111 aircraft criss-cross the globe, serving 97 cities in 61 countries. Emirates is currently the only airline to operate non-stop flights to six continents from one hub. Although owned by the government of Dubai, Emirates is financially independent and receives no subsidies or protection. It operates and competes with more than 110 airlines operating in Dubai under the city’s “Open skies” regime. Emirates has been profitable every year since inception, with the exception of the second. Annual growth has never fallen below 20 per cent. In its last full financial year, Emirates reported its 19th consecutive year of profits at US$844 million, and carried 17.5 million passengers

Now where to get the feckin pilots LMAO

EK selling Aircraft?

Spoke with the CEO of Arik Airlines in Nigeria a few weeks ago, he told me that they were looking to buy the early model B777's from EK. Was getting to the stage of sending engineers to review paperwork for the aircraft.

Dont think they will take many but maybe a couple of B777's will go?

It had been reported that the sweetener in the A350 offer was a buch of very cheap A330-300s on lease from 2009 until the new aircraft arrives, amoungst other things hedging against delivery delays. Was that mentioned at the show at all?

One thing you can be sure of, with the Euro and USD values as they stand today, Emirates got what could only be described as "an offer they couldn't refuse" from Airbus.

Given their experience with Airbus in the past, you can guarantee there are absolutely airtight guarantees built in to the contract where Airbus will pay up for any late arrival or performance shortcoming of the aircraft.

EK in record breaking order blah, blah...

Not to be out done by any up start local (well flag carrying) airline, the winner of the biggest d**k in the ME goes to... EK!!!

120 x 350XWBs and a few more 777s to add a few more inches should ensure everyone knows whose the big boy on the block...

Meanwhile; no trainers, pilots, engineers and all of things that keep the things in the air in the first place...

Snoop And the 'measuring' begins... or continues

Qatar Airways has finally announced its long held orders for Boeing 777s and 787s at the Dubai air show today, confirming a firm deal for 27 777s and 30 787s with options on 35 more.
The firm orders are worth $13.5 billion and all the aircraft will be powered by General Electric engines.
The 787 deal comprises 30 firm orders for the -8 model for delivery from mid-2010, plus 30 options, powered by GEnx engines. The airline has the option to switch to the larger -9 and proposed -10 variant.
This order was unofficially revealed at the 787's roll-out in July, when the Qatar Airways logo appeared on the aircraft's fuselage.
The 777 order has been on Boeing's books for over a year, but includes five new orders for 777Fs to add to the existing deal for 14 777-300ERs (the first of which is about to be delivered), six -200LRs and two -777Fs. The airline has also taken five 777 options.
Delivery of the -200LRs will begin in the second half of 2008 with the 777Fs arriving from late 2009.
