Renewing Class 1
My Class 1 CAA runs out at the end of this month. Do I have to renew it under JAR before it expires or can I renew it a couple of weeks/months later. I heard a rumour that if you don't renew it before it expires there is some penalty?? Advice please.

The only penalty is that you would have to shell out £400 on getting an initial Class1 done again at Gatwick.
Under CAA rules, you could let a CAA Class1 lapse. To validate it, all you needed to do was to go to a AME, as you would do for a normal renewel - no problem! Under JAA, if you let your Class1 lapse, you have to undergo the initial at Gatwick..........so don't let it lapse!! Get on the 'phone to your AME pronto Regards Barney |
Rubbish, any Class 1 AME can renew up to 2yrs late without referral to CAA, up to 5yrs refer to CAA, after 5yrs must go to Gatwick.

docfly is right,
once you have a caa class 1 you go through the same procedure as if you were revalidating your caa medical,i should no i have just done it! |
Not disagreeing with Docfly or anyone else but can somebody enlighten me as to where this is laid down. I've just looked through the CAA website and found nothing on renewals.

Answered my own question on this one but here for the benefit of everyone else is the word from the horse's mouth (pen?):
Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 3.105: (b) If a licence holder allows his Medical Certificate to expire by more than five years, renewal shall require an initial or extended, at AMS discretion, aeromedical examination, performed at an AMC which has obtained his medical records. (EEG may be omitted unless clinically indicated.) (c) If a licence holder allows his Medical Certificate to expire by more than two years but less than five years, renewal shall require the prescribed standard or extended examination to be performed at an AMC which has obtained his medical file, or by an AME at the discretion of the AMS, subject to the records of medical examinations for flight crew licences being made available to the medical examiners. (d) If a licence holder allows his certificate to expire by more than 90 days but less than two years, renewal shall require the prescribed standard or extended examination to be performed at an AMC, or by an AME at the discretion of the AMS. (e) If a licence holder allows his certificate to expire by less than 90 days, renewal shall be possible by standard or extended examination as prescribed. Link to this is: http://www.jaa.nl/jar/jar/jar/jar.fc....3.105.apx.htm So docfly is partially correct. An AME can recertify medicals which have lapsed by less than 2 years but only at the discretion of the national AMS ie Gatwick. |
Can't be bothered to look up the reference but the CAA have given discretion to all UK AMEs up to 2yrs.
