Steroids
Whilst training in the gym the other day, the topic of taking steroids came up (as it frequently does). Firstly, I would never use them, and I know a fair bit about the effects etc, but are there any aircrew out there who have used them before, or are would they be forbidden on medical grounds?

Willy,
Normally the use of steroids precludes flying duties. However steroids used to treat specific problems eg. corticosteroids for some autoimmune diseases can be taken up to 10mg daily after a qualifying period(to ascertain how the individual reacts to the drug)and flying may commence.I doubt the CAA would be happy about pilots using anabolic steroids in the pursuit of enhanced performance or to build muscle and I would guess if they found out they would suspend your medical. My advice mate is don't risk it. Regards. |
As I said in the first post, I personally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, it was just a point of interest to find out if it was "illegal" in (CAA) medical terms, basically just to settle an argument.
It certainly wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that it has been done before though! Cheers :) ------------------ I'm on my way! |
What are steroids?
Many thanks Batu |
Batu,
Steroids such as anabolic steroids ( eg Deca-Durabolin, Sustanon 250 etc...) are man-made chemicals that'll help someone build muscle while losing fat. However, I wouldn't recommend it cos you might lose your medical, according to the guys above, and also did you know that they have the 'power' to shrink organs in which they have affinity with? You got to be joking... |
Thank you very much

I was treated with steroids for an infection back in the 80's and the USAF Flight Doc grounded me for the 10 day duration--Not sure if they were the same steroids a weight lifter would consume, though.
