colour vision

I see from the JAA website that it is possible to get a first class medical by being declared colour safe. Is this the same waiver process as in the US (ie getting your colour perception checked by the tower signal lights) or is it something different.

I would apperciate any info on this. I currently hold a FAA 1st class medical.

Hello Inverted.

JAR-FCL 3.225 reads as follows; Colour Perception.

1/ Normal colour perception is defined as the ability to pass the Ishihara test or to pass Nagel's anomaloscope as a normal trichomate.

2/ An applicant shall have normal perception of colours or be colour safe. Applicants who fail Ishihara's test shall be assessed as colour safe if they pass extensive testing with methods acceptable to the AMS (anomaloscopy or colour lanterns)

3/ An applicant who fails the acceptable colour perception tests is to be considered to be colour unsafe and shall be assessed as unfit.

Hope this helps.... :)

thanks for the info but what I am really looking for is what exactly is involved in these methods acceptable to the AMS.

Hi Inverted,

Try this link to mail the CAA medical department and ask them direct.

Does anyone know how other JAR states conduct their colour testing ?
I have an unrestricted class 3 and a restricted class 2; I can fly at night on my PPL but not on my BCPL (CAA medical have confirmed this). With the issue of my BCPL (AFI upgrade) came a letter stating that I haven't met the colour perception standards of the Chicago Convention etc. but that I could challenge the Authority on my case (not the medical results, which I don't argue with, but their treatment of me).
If it would be possible for me to get a class 1 medical in another JAA state, could that be a case of unfair treatment by the CAA?

I'll think I'll start a new thread
