wisdom tooth extraction
 

Hi guys,

I had two wisdom teeth extracted last week and am still
suffering a stinging pain in my left ear, which worsened after
flying one leg (as a pax, as I'm still not back at work)...:sad:

Any one of you experienced similar problems and can tell
me how long recovery took in your case?? Cheers...

This subject was covered on here about 2 years ago, so it may be worth conducting a search...from memory, folk who underwent this procedure generally seemed to recover within 2 weeks.

It sounds like you may be experiencing some "referred" pain, the source being the mouth wound, but the brain confusing the nerve pathways, into believing the ear as the source of irritation.

I'm assuming that you are feeling generally well, (no fever), and that there are no other worrying symptoms (deafness, face palsy).

It may be worth a quick visit to the quack for a look down your ear and at the wound-if only for peace of mind.

I suspect the pain on flying maybe incidental.

I had three wisdom teeth out under a GA two months ago. Took a week off flying, the drugs they put me on (Flagyl, cephalexin, codalgin, cyklokapron) made me feel really horrible, dizzy and sick, I couldn't even drive. First week back at work was uncomfortable especially as the stitches were tickling and felt too tight, the sockets of course obeyed Boyle's Law.. After two weeks the stitches had dissolved and I was back to normal.

I had a wisdom tooth extracted a month ago and was perfectly ok the following day. I flew home 48 hours after the extraction as a pax and felt absolutely nothing.

I am married to a medic who tells me that the brain often gets confused with the precise area that pain is coming from generally.

This is especially the case with pain from tooth extraction or tooth ache. The pain you feel in your ear may well be coming from the cavity where your tooth was. After 2 weeks you should have healed well enough to fly, I would go back to your dentist because an infection could have occured that is causing the pain you feel when flying.

I have now lost 3 wisdom teeth and not really had any problems apart from on one occasion when a small piece of the extracted tooth was left in the socket; I flew 48 hours later (as crew) and could feel pain, I went back to the dentist who pulled the tiny slither of tooth out and I was ok from then on.

Going to the dentist tomorrow, for a last
check-up and on wednesday I'm seeing my
"flight doctor" who, back on friday would
not yet sign me off ok back for work,
as I was/am still receiving treatment...
