Changes to gain JAA Class 1??
 

Hi all

I need to convert my CASA (non-JAA) Class 1 medical to a JAA Class 1. I was previously told, on good authority, that all I would only need to do is an extended renewal medical examination. After doing a search on here I have found this is the case with others.

However, after looking at the JAA medical website there is a flow chart which indicates I must do an initial exam. Before I ring the AMS and hassle them I was wondering if anyone has converted their Class 1 medical from non-JAA to JAA recently or if there are new requirements for gaining a medical with a foreign CPL/ATPL?

It used to be the case that if you had a foreign CPL or above you could gain a JAA class 1 under renewal standards, this system has now been abolished since a couple of months back and anyone going for a JAA class 1 from a foreign licence must now undergo the JAA initial class 1 medical exam. no changes to the exam itself(except eyesight limit is now -6) but it has to be an initial exam.

So, if I meet the renewal standards (as far as eyesight goes) but not the initial standards I cant get a JAA Class 1 medical? Whereas a couple of months ago I could! This seems rather bizarre, am I reading this legislation right or am I missing something?

that is correct. there are actually no renewal standards now, theres nothing for you to meet as its unlimited. the standard now is the inital of -6. coming from another country you will have to meet the inital standard to gain a class1 wereas a few months ago you could pass the then renewal standard of -8, but like i say, this doesnt exist anymore.

According to this it is still possible to get a deviation with an ICAO CPL/ATPL license.

I've seen this page before. yes you COULD be considered for a class 1 but only with a long term deviaiton, as in, the deviation will NEVER be removed from your medical certificate. i dont actually know what this means in terms for looking for a job, i think it doesnt make a difference but best to hear from someone who has a long term deviation and maybe they can tell you how it has affected them.
