Innoculations
 

Moving to HK in the next few months with CX. I have just been through the list of WHO innoculations with my doctor (typhoid, JEV etc). Just curious will CX do these when I join or is it up to me (my choice) whether I bother to get these done.

It is your choice. If you do choose to have the vaccinations, bear in mind that Hepatitis B is rampant in East Asia and South-East Asia. There are literally millions of Hepatitis B carriers in the polulation, and it is completely preventable by the vaccination. If acquired, it is completely uncurable, and carries a very significant mortality rate.

Sex is only one of many means of acquiring Hep B, there are numerous other ways to acquire this fatal disease. You don't have to be a 'bad' boy or a 'bad' girl to get Hep B.

Immunisations are one of the most effective medical interventions we have.

I'd have the mainstream ones. Not sure I'd have Jap B encephalitis though, if that is what JEV is.

Dunno. Would need more info. Risk for an airline pilot is likely to be very small and the vaccine used to be unlicenced. May still be.

Yep, its pretty unusual to give the jap encephalitis.

DO have the Hep B jabs, even if nothing else. I've lost 3 friends to this horrific disease already, all preventable, and all from liver cancer as indicated by gingernut.

That's 3 too many........DO IT!

Please quote some evidence for that statement.

The studies are numerous. Try searching a medical database, such as medline. I had a quick play with the search terms "hep b immunisation" AND liver cancer. See the link below.
Unfortunately I havnn't time to critically appraise the evidence fully, but one large scale study measured an incidence drop from 3.27/10,000 to 0.17/10,000 14 years following a national infant hep b immunisation programme.



One word of caution. You are unlikely to find (m)any grade A1 Randomised Control Studies for immunisation interventions. Most of the studies will be prospective cohort studies.

This doesn't mean to say that the studies are any less useful, clinically, its just difficult to design such studies for imms programmes.

As it is for testing the effectiveness of parachutes.
