Class 1 lapses to class2?
 

I have a jaa class 1 medical (lapsed) can I change this to a class 2 then revalidate my class 1 in 3ish yrs times?

I was under the impression it lapsed to a Class 2 anyway if you didn't renew/revalidate.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Have you tried ringing/emailing the CAA?

I believe the Class 1 turns into a Class 2 after one year, then I think you have fours years of Class 2 before that runs out - thats if my memory's correct??!

If you do speak to the CAA, please post their response Nottelling, as it would be interesting to know. My Class 1 ran out end of Aug and I think im "running on" Class 2 now!

This has come up several times before. Yes, a Class 1 has "Class 2 privileges and validities", ie when lapsed it can be used as a Class 2. You then have 5 years (I think) to revalidate your Class1; after that it's back to Gatwick.

I'm in a similar situation, my Class 1 has just lapsed in October. Looking at the Medical section on the CAA website http://www.caa.co.uk/srg/med/default.asp a Class 2 is valid for 5 years from date of issue dependant on age . Seeing as you only get a Class 2 from the date that your Class 1 expires I would imagine that Whirlybird is absolutely right, we should now have 5 years in which to reval our medicals so long as we are within the age bracket (i.e. pre-30yo).

If you are over 30 you have to reval your class 2 every two years however. Most of this is on the CAA website although it does fail to answer the very fundamental question that we want answered! Thank god for PPrune! If you do want to reval soon though, the CAA website does have a directory of local AME's who can do it for you which could save some time (on hold to the CAA!)

Your local AME is completely au fait with all of this - or should be!! Just give him a call. If you don't have one, there's a list on the CAA website.

I am in a similar position, my class 1 expires in a few days and there is one thing I do not want to do again, it is to go back to Gatwick for the full thing again !

I have emailed the caa. I expected that would be quicker and easier than phoning but... I have an automated response saying it may take upto 10days. I will post back when I get a "real" response

Class1 to Class2
 

It is not as straitforward as it appears.

A CAA class 1 medical used to automaticaly become a class 2 and was valid as such. I understand from my AME and the CAA that this is not the case with the JAA medical. The solution I was given was to obtain a Class 2 at the same time as the Class 1 medical. Then if you dont renew your class 1 you can still fly on the class2.

It doesnt cost anything extra to do this.

That was the case when JAA started. Then, for a while, you could get a sticker for a Class 1 saying that it was valid as a Class 2. Now you don't need that sticker; when it lapses, you can use it as a Class 2, for as long as the Class 2 would have been valid (ie from the date of the actual medical). I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN of this. I've done it several times...got a Class 2 as a PPL, then a Class 1 to make sure I could before starting CPL exams, lapsed to a Class 2, got a Class 1 to get my CPL, lapsed to a Class 2, got a Class 1 to get my FI rating. I've done it under all the sets of rules. I've checked it with the CAA and my AME. Trust me, this is how it is...unless it changed again very recently, and I don't think it did.

Thanks for the update, my info is based on my last renewal nearly 18 months ago. I can well believe it has changed since then!

Well it took a while but I finally got my reply from the CAA today. The good news is I can use my class 1 (Gained end of Oct 03) for class 2 privileges for up to 5 years (for the under 30's) from the date of issue ie until Oct 08. You DO NOT need to retake the class 1 initial IF you revalidate before the end of the 5 years of class 2 validity.
