Class 1 Lapsing to Class 2

Hello,

I passed my class 1 medical at the end of April 2002 and since I am only doing my PPL automatically let it lapse to a class 2.

However I was wondering if I need to ring the CAA and ask them to send me out a class 2 certificate. Or does my class 1 suffice for the next couple of years. Or do I need to go have another check up (at class 2 level) and then they will issue me one?

Thanks a lot

As far as I understand this your class 1 does not provide you with class 2 privileges past its date of validity like the old CAA medical certificate did or the FAA one does.

Have a look at the small print of your medical certificate.

A Class 1 definitely IS valid for Class 2 privileges. The CAA confused everyone by changing things so that it wasn't, then changing it back again. For a while you had to get a sticker from your AME saying this was the case, since the certificate itself no longer says it. Now, according to my AME, you don't even need that. But you are definitely OK. However, for your own peace of mind, why not ring the CAA or any AME and check?

save your money had similar situation earlier this year - your class 1 can be regarded as a valid class 2 from date of class 1 issue to end of normal class 2 validity - at last something free from the caa !

Hello,

Thank you all for your replies - you are right there is small print on the certificate saying that a class 1 is valid for all class 2 privlidges and validities.

I have rung the CAA though just to get the 'offical' yes but as normal i'm in a queue of about 300 people no doubt...

Thanks once again I've got peace of mind :D

Whats involved in regaining the class 1 after it has lapsed?

Whirlybird 7th November 2003 23:36

Regaining your Class 1 is no big deal; you just get it with an AME as usual. I think that after a certain time - 5 years I think, but I'm not certain - you need to go back to Gatwick though, so don't leave it too long. :(

I drove my AME mad switching between a Class 1 and 2 for a few years; it was no problem really - except that he had to sort out what needed to be tested as different things last different lengths of time.

Hello,

Got a phone call back from the CAA stating that I don't need to do anything as the Class1 certificate is valid as a 2 until my 5 years are up.

So you can all be happy in knowing you were right ;).

Thanks once again!
