Pain in one ear
 

A pain in one ear which becomes significantly more intense when taking antibiotics. Any suggestions as to what it might be ?

Been a pilot since 1982. Have flown twice since with a “sore” ear. Both times were a situation in which I needed to have somebody come and get get me because I had no idea which way was up.

Any suggestions as to what it might be ?

I'd suggest it's a really good reason to see an Otolaryngologist.

Likely worst case - ruptured eardrum, which I expect is a pain that is exquisite and very distracting.

Do you think, just maybe a Doctor should be your first port of call rather than a pilot rumour network?

I have spent forty years investigating and consulted many doctors without any clear diagnosis. The correlation with antibiotics is a more recent observation which seems worth following up, but any connection is more likely to be apparent from experience rather than medical knowledge.

Are you taking antibiotics very often ? If so, that is quite concerning.

If I get a cold* or whatever, I don't take prescriptions, I take daily vitamins and minerals. The human immune system can fight most common ailments, as long as it has access to a ready supply of 'raw materials' to build millions of fighting cells to attack the infection.

* Colds are not caused by bacteria, so antibiotics are of no use in that particular case.

Dont worry about the antibiotics. It took thirty years to notice the connection.

Well if you have been going to doctors about this for 40 years without any resolution, then that is very concerning, on many levels.

I assume that all the normal checks and investigations have been carried out, and that you have been to specialists, but nobody has found anything ?

So perhaps you have a blood vessel or a tumour pressing on a nerve or something. No idea why antibiotics would make that worse.

Have you had an MRI scan ?

MRI scan is next on the to do list. Obviously symptoms which were once very worrying become less worrying with the passage of time.
