Sinus issues
 

Hi folks,

I am looking for some insight from fellow colleagues.

I have had sinus problems for the last few months, and been kinda diagnosed with chronic sinusitis recently.

Looking at the CAA's guidelines, I understand this is "disqualifying" (maybe I am wrong?)

However, my AME and ENT specialist are happy to let me fly as I do not experience any particular pain (barotrauma and the likes). Their argument is that if the sinuses are blocked, then there is no air exchange and therefore no pressure.

I feel generally OK when on the ground (let's say 70/80% of the time), and my symptoms (facial pressure) are quite mild when I have some. However, I feel I have had a few more than usual URTI/respiratory issues recently.

I am using steroid nasal spray and saline solution to help.... I don't take anything before or when flying. I suspect I may have some allergy issues as contributory factors (dust mites etc...), but have not been tested for allergies. Maybe antihistamines would help.

I have had a couple of CT scans, which obviously do not look very good, and based on the CT scans, the ENT specialist is now suggesting I undergo FESS (surgery) in the next few weeks. My AME is a bit split on this (so am I) and suggest I wait a little bit, see how things go.

I am obviously concerned about any potential complications of surgery and actually make things worse.:uhoh:

I am sure some of you guys have experienced something similar...what advice would you offer based on your experience of this condition?

I had Chronic sinusitis for many many years, although this was back before i was a pilot.
so by the time I applied for my medical, the situation was considered resolved.

I had FESS and a deviated septum corrected.

was the BEST thing ever for my sinusitis. No more sinus infections, can breathe again.
The only thing it didn't cure was the post nasal drip. I still get this, its a minor irritation.

Thanks for the feedback. I am glad most of it is sorted out for you now that you fly. I am not very keen on FESS, I have to say, but if it is the only way, then....

may I ask why you are not keen on it? I was in overnight, had a bit of bleeding and was perfectly recovered in two weeks.

the worst part of it was actually the side effects from the antibiotics, which, depending on your gender, may not be so much of an issue for you !

I guess I am concerned about possible complications, with the eyes and brain.... I have been so unlucky in this whole story.

I kind of get your concerns but before I had the surgery I was at the stage where taking a drill to my own head was sounding like an awesome idea. The surgery ( when I finally persuaded them to do it) was a no-brainer.
