Can I operate as a LTC with an OML
I have an OML on my Class 1 medical. A line training Captain position has recently been advertised in my company which I would like to apply for.
The OML states that I can operate with or as a qualified co-pilot. Is a first officer qualified once base training has been completed or are they qualified after completion of line training? If it is the former then I would assume I can carry out the duties of a LTC. If anyone could shed more light on this I would appreciate it. |
The way I understand the OML, is that it only restricts you as a single pilot in commercial operations. This includes TRE, as these are also qualified for Zero Flight Time Training, is classified as (possible) single pilot operations. LTC, by my understanding, should be a possibility.

Yes you are correct about commercial single pilot ops. However, the “with or as qualified co-pilot” is the language that I am unsure about. Is a co-pilot qualified after base training or after line training.?
|
After base training. OML does not affect LTC, provided the crew member being trained in under 60 YO!
I know because I am one! (And a training postholder. |
Thanks.
Is it in black and white anywhere on CAA website that I can use when communicating with my employer? |
A humble suggestion here is that your co-pilot, even with base check complete and licence endorsed, might not be signed off in accordance with your company Ops Manual and therefore insurance until his final line check sign off has been completed.

Yes a very valid point, thank you.

Please do not confuse being licensed (with an type rating on a licence) with a Company OM Requirement. One is legal, and one is what the company does.
Provided the individual has the rating, then you can Line Train them with an OML. HOWEVER, your OM-D may have requirements above the basics, so you'd be best to review in there. LTC is a Company Appointment after all. I've never come across an insurance requirement for a final Line Check. Common sense also says how would you be able to Line Train???? Every insurance policy i've purchased is defined in terms of minimum licence required and stipulated minimum hours of experience. You will not find a clear definition of CRMT as it is now. However you can see you instructional limitations within Part-FCL. |
Our manual states that you can’t line train new pilots with an OML but that is, I believe, a company requirement rather than an EASA one.
