Blood tests (again!)
 

Just had notification that "routine" blood test for a skin rash 6 months ago has shown up "high serum alkaline phosphatase" (114u/l) and low "serum sodium" (134u/l). Are these connected and do I worry about them? Am feeling fine, age 68. Much indebted to any learned friends out there for any information.

Off the top of my head, they don't seem too far away from the mark.

A lot depends on how the lab define their range of "normal" and "abnormal."

You may wish to talk to your doc about the significance of the results. I suspect that there is no significance.

PS, haven't still got my head around "routine" blood tests.

For some reason a dermatologist has asked for them as a follow up to a skin rash I had in the summer. No wiser than that but it is opening a can of worms!

they sound okay so far, check the "reference range" for your lab and doc, suspect nothing more needs to be done.

Gingernut is correct. If you are otherwise well these numbers mean nothing.

Like Gingernut I hate 'routine bloods' almost as much as 'routine operations'. Playing devil's advocate, your dermatologist:

1 had a duty to inform you why he was taking blood, and

2 to convey the results and their significance to you.

Didn't he do so when he saw you for your follow up appointment??

you could always ring up his secretary demanding an explanation......
