Tattoos and Class 1 Medicals
Hey
I am thinking of getting a small tattoo done on the top of my arm soon, and my class 1 renewal is up in August. I remember being asked if I had any tattoos done during my initial. Why do they want to know? Would a tattoo be a problem for getting a renewal? I am worried if it will become an issue, it's not like it's going to be visible day to day. |
No a tattoo will not deny you a class 1. The only people to worry about is the employer, but if the tattoo will not be on show wearing a pilot uniform then it's ok. Problems start when you have tattoos on your neck, face or a whole sleeve.
It sounds like your tattoo won't be visible with a shirt on so it's fine. I was led to believe the reason they ask for tattoo might be for body identification. I could be completely wrong but that's what a friend said. |
I heard that one as well.

A reason for asking about recent tattoos at a medical is probably the same reason as the Blood Transfusion Service ask the same question. Depending on where the tattoo was done (as in which country as opposed to where on your body) there is an HIV risk associated with tattoos therefore your donation may not be accepted for a prescribed period.

We ask about recent tattoos if we're faced with patients with deranged liver function tests, the theory being that it could be responsible for hepb (or even c and e). Never seen it bourne out though.
Could be worth a search as this was covered about 5 years ago I think:) |
For Class 1 tattoos are just noted in the "distinguishing features" section of the medical form. Nowt to worry about. I have tattoos on both my upper arms & have had no problems.
