CAA Class 1 medical renewal – can it lapse by 1 year?

I have been told by colleagues that it is CAA policy that I can let my Class 1 medial lapse by one year & the next year I only need to do a renewal; any lapse over 2 years & it is back to Gatwick for another initial issues.

i.e. Have a Class 1 renewal every 2 years, saving a lot of money (I do not need to exercise Class 1 privileges currently). However, I can’t find the policy decision written anywhere. I have tried the SRG website but to no avail. Can anyone help?

I let mine lapse whilst training and only had to do a renewal, I'm not sure how long it can remain lapsed before you need an initial though.

I think that if you let it lapse for a year, it becomes valid as a Class 2 medical. (i.e. Acceptable for PPL level).

As class 2, it is valid for 5 years.

It was five years lapse before you had to go back to Gatwick. Just telephone the medical section or your AME and ask?

Thanks for all the posts. I'll call my local AME. It's a shame it is not written down anywhere for us to reference.

Hey Just wondering if you found out if it is indeed 5 years until you have to go back to Gatwick to do the initial class 1 again?

Hi,

My local AME advised me that whilst I don't need to use my Class 1, to keep it cheaper by doing a Class 1 every 2 years (i.e. year on, year off).

Sorry but I didn't look into what happens after 2 years. Maybe try the CAA Medical website, but a call to a AME may be best:
